To celebrate a breakthrough (突破) by students in using AI to change silkie chicken (乌骨鸡) farming at the chicken farm in Chishui, Guizhou Province, the Tencent Cloud Artificial Intelligence Class—a programme set up by the university and Tencent—offered free “AI chicken soup” to all teachers and students at Shenzhen University on 16 January, 2024.
“As the Spring Festival is on the way, the farm in Chishui sent hundreds of chickens and eggs to the university, so we decided to turn these chickens into ‘AI chicken soup’ before the holiday to give teachers and students a taste of technology,” said Chen Sirui, a student in the class.
Over eight months, about a dozen students from the class have tried to dedicate themselves to developing the silkie chicken farming in Chishui. They used the computer vision technology to successfully identify (识别) and track (追踪) 250,000 silkie chickens. The result was a success of the world’s first intelligent silkie chicken farming system. Operating for more than six months, the system increased the farm’s output by 30%, keeping another 60,000 chickens.
Class member Chen said, “This system sends valuable data to the chicken farmers’ mobile phones. The farmers can notice their chickens at any time. The aim is to raise the income of the farmers.” A leader of the university said, “The project enables students to face real industry challenges, deepens their understanding of technology and develops their practical skills.”

Westerners don’t like the number 13. Here are several reasons.

Many people hope lucky numbers will bring them good luck. In Chinese culture, some numbers are believed to be lucky or unlucky according to the Chinese characters that the number sounds similar to. For example, the number 8 sounds similar to the Chinese character for “making a fortune(发财)”. So people think it’s a lucky number. Some even spend a lot of money having the number 8 in their phone numbers or vehicle license plate numbers. The opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics Games began at 8:08 p.m. on 8 August, 2008.
The number 9 is also a lucky number because of its connection to the emperors(皇帝) of ancient China. There were nine dragons on the emperors’ robes(袍). It’s said that the dragon has nine children. The number 9 also stands for “long lasting”. That’s why a man always gives a woman 99 or 999 roses.
Then what’s the unlucky number in China It might be the number 4. Many Chinese people take 4 as an unlucky number because it sounds similar to the Chinese character for “death”. The world’s longest cross-sea bridge, the 55-km-long Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (HZMB) opened on Oct. 24, 2018. The Guardian described it as one of the “seven wonders of the modern world” . Construction on the HZMB began in 2009 and cost about 120 billion yuan. The bridge links Hong Kong and Macao to the Chinese mainland city of Zhuhai, CGTN reported.
The HZMB is unique in many ways. It’s designed to have a service life of 120 years, 20 years longer than most bridges. It’ s not just a bridge, but also part tunnel and part island. In one section the bridge turns into a 6.7-km undersea tunnel that passes through two man-made islands. The tunnel is the world’s longest undersea tunnel for road traffic, allowing large ships to continue passing through the sea area above the tunnel.
The bridge’s engineers had to think of many environmental factors in order to protect the surrounding environment while building the bridge. Chinese white dolphins, an endangered species that lives in the area, were a particular concern.
The HZMB will make it much more convenient to travel between the three areas it connects. It will shorten the travel time from Hong Kong to Zhuhai from four hours to about 45 minutes.
By drawing local cities and regions closer together, the bridge will help in the area’s development. It is expected to drive the economic development of Hong Kong, Macao and nine Guangdong cities, South China Morning Post noted.
