Adaptation and innovation (创新) of traditional opera is the important trend of Chinese opera circles in recent years. In order to attract young audiences of new generation and catch up with the time, traditional opera circles make efforts to create new works. In recent years, traditional opera came across the change of time and society. It gradually lost the main elderly audiences and was not attractive to young audiences.
In order to find new opportunities, using modern sound, light and digital stage effects, China's traditional Peking Opera is appealing to young people in a fashionable and innovative way, as the classic art faces an ageing audience.
The centuries-old Tianleyuan Theatre in Beijing has introduced fashionable performances of Peking Opera. The opera combines instrumental music, vocal performances, mime (哑剧表演), dance and acrobatics (杂技).
Tianleyuan has a jingju art experience section and fashionable performances. It has attracted more than 2,000 audience members, mostly young people, according to theatre staff.
“Good art should keep pace with the times, so does jingju,” said Zhang Zishang, a 22-year-old performer of The Drunken Beauty, one of the classic jingju plays performed in the theatre.“I feel today's performance is very special,” Zhang said. She was born into a family of jingju performers and has had 10 years of stage experience.“Innovation is good, but we must also carry on the basic elements of jingju,” another young performer Deng said.
According to Deng, innovation is perhaps the best way for jingju to deal with the problem of an ageing audience. She has made successful attempts to combine jingju with local opera forms such as ballet when organising performances abroad.“Innovation can help traditional arts go further. We are happy to see many young faces, and some of them even come twice to experience the ‘new’ art,” she added.

I fell in love with the minister’s son the winter I turned fourteen. He wasn’t Chinese. For Christmas, I wished for this golden-haired boy Robert and a perfect American nose.
When I learned that my parents had invited the minister’s family to our Christmas-Eve dinner, I panicked. What would Robert think of our shabby Chinese Christmas, of my noisy relatives with unfashionable manners, of a table without roast turkey but full of Chinese dishes
On Christmas Eve, my mother seemed determined to worked extra hard. The kitchen was filled with the smell of raw seafood and ginger. A slippery fish with big eyes was ready to be cooked in oil.
Soon the doorbell rang again and again as the minister’s family and all my relatives crowded in, arms full of gifts and loud conversation. Robert muttcred “hello”, and I pretended I did not notice him.
Dinner made me feel even worse. My grandmother loudly slurped (啜饮着) her hot-and-sour soup, a sound that always meant “delicious” in our family. When my aunt placed a plate of chicken feet on the table, Robert’s little brother pointed and whispered, “Those look like toes!” My mother proudly served a dish of stinky tofu, whose strong smell filled the room instantly. Robert’s father pushed the plate away, shaking his head, while my cousin took a big bite and said, “It smells bad, but tastes great!”
Just as tension peaked, my father beamed and plunged his chopsticks into the steamed fish. Expertly, he lifted a shining piece of the tender belly and placed it onto Robert’s plate. “The best part for our guest!” he boomed. Then my father slid his chopsticks just below the fish’s eye, lifted out the soft cheek, and dropped it into my bowl. “Amy, your favorite,” he announced. I wanted to disappear.
Robert was looking down at his plate with a reddened face and I was stunned into silence for the rest of the night, certain this Christmas Eve would haunt my memories forever.

故填with。

Paragraph 1: After the guests left, I locked myself in the room. I sank onto my bed, burying my face in the pillow to muffle the humiliating echoes of the dinner— the slurping soup, the stinky tofu’s odor, Robert’s flushed cheeks when Father placed that fish on his plate…Through the window, the faint glow of neighborhood Christmas lights filtered in, but they seemed to mock my shame instead of bringing warmth. “To Robert, I’ll always be the weird girl.” Tears pricked my eyes as I envisioned him laughing with his family about our chaotic dinner. I wished I could erase the entire evening from my life along with my “betraying” Chinese nose, which could never live up to the “perfection” I’d longed for.
Paragraph 2: “Amy. May I come in ” Mom called gently outside the room. I didn’t answer, but Mom creaked the door open, carrying my favorite tea whose scent calmed my nerves. She sat beside me, shoulder brushing mine as she did in my childhood nightmares. “Father gave Robert the fish’s tender belly—our family’s best for guests—and you the delicate cheek” she said, pressing the warm cup into my hands. “Love isn’t about turkey or perfect noses,” she added, swirling the tea, “but sharing what’s precious, even with a strong smell.” Staring at the ripples, I realized Father’s chopsticks had spoken a language of care—one Robert might not grasp, but one I was starting to cherish. Slowly, I took a sip in relief. The flavor was familiar, tender. Not shame. Home.

Have you ever wondered what the food you eat every day can tell you about where you come from Have you ever wondered why people from different parts of the world eat different types of food Do you ever ask yourself why certain foods or cooking traditions are so important to your culture There is more of a connection between food and culture than you may think.
On a personal level, we grow up eating the food of our cultures. It becomes a part of who each of us is. Many of us connect food from our childhood with warm feelings and good memories and it ties us to our families, holding special and personal value for us.

As the world becomes more globalised (全球化), it is easier to get food from different cultures. In the midst of an already record-breaking heat wave, Phoenix, Arizona, set a particularly eye-popping record: the temperature only dropped to 97 degrees Fahrenheit overnight between Tuesday and Wednesday, setting an all-time record high for a nighttime low. When temperatures stay high overnight, they place a particularly heavy burden on the body, raising the risk of heat illness and death.
The U.S. —and the world—has seen a spate of extreme heat so far this year, including the planet’s hottest-ever June and hottest week on record during the first week of July. Rising global temperatures from burning fossil fuels are the main driver of more frequent and more intense heat waves. And an El Ni o event is also boosting global temperatures this year.
A heat dome has been in place for weeks over the U.S. Southwest and Texas, and it has fueled many heat records. Phoenix has now seen 20 days in a row with a daytime high of 110 degrees F or higher, a record that is likely to continue for several more days. A heat dome is an area of high pressure that parks over a region. High-pressure ridges, as they are also called, feature sinking air, which compresses and heats up. These ridges’ typical clear skies also allow the sun’s rays to beat down on the ground, further raising temperatures.
Prolonged heat extremes pose a major public health threat because heat is the number-one weather-related killer in the U.S.; it causes more human deaths than hurricanes, tornadoes and floods combined. Heat can cause dehydration, which leads the blood to thicken and makes the heart pump harder. That organ and others can be damaged by too much exposure to heat.
The soaring, triple-digit high daily temperatures grab the headlines, and they definitely are a concern—but when temperatures only drop into the 80s and 90s at night, the body doesn’t get a chance to cool down. This is particularly a concern for those who lack air-conditioning, including unhoused populations. And heat is especially a health risk for the very young, the elderly and those with preexisting health conditions such as asthma and heart disease.
8.What can be inferred from the first two paragraphs
A.Extreme temperatures can cause damage to our hearts.
B.Burning fossil fuels contributes to the hottest-ever June and July.
C.El Nino is the dominant cause of soaring global temperature.
D.The temperature at night has reached a record high in Phoenix, Arizona.
9.What is a heat dome according to the passage
A.It’s a weather phenomenon that contributes to high temperatures.
B.It’s a peak that the low pressure should reach.
C.It’s the damage caused by too much exposure to heat.
D.It’s the extra heat trapped in the sinking air.
10.According to the passage, what’s the influence high overnight temperature has on humans
A.It is the top one killer in America. B.Exposure to heat contributes to heart diseases.
C.Human organs might be impaired. D.People accommodate to 80s and 90s Fahrenheit at night.
11.What’s the passage mainly talking about
A.Soaring temperatures are hitting the headlines. B.Anew eye popping overnight low record is set.
C.Hot overnight temperatures threaten human health. D.Global heat waves are causing concerns.

In the Arab world, a souk (露天市场) is a market usually held in an open-air location. Souks are an important part of life in the Middle East.1 Another attraction of souks is that they offer visitors a great opportunity to feel the local culture.
Most major souks probably started as informal meetings of merchants (商人) in open spaces, which slowly developed into more formal markets.2 For example, some souks have partial ceilings (顶棚) to protect against bad weather, along with narrow streets which do not permit cars.
Everything from glassware to meat can be found at a souk, with merchants coming from nearby areas to sell their products.3 So visitors can easily find beautiful artworks in all shapes and sizes at a souk, often at very reasonable prices.
4 By tradition, shoppers at a souk must negotiate (协商) with shopkeepers to reach a price. For large items, customers will have to sit down with the shopkeeper. They will be offered tea and snacks while the price, including storage and delivery costs sometimes, is discussed.
If you happen to be travelling in the Middle East, just pay a visit to a souk. Some regions have famous markets with a long and interesting history, and a souk is a great place to get souvenirs. You can find a local guide for your visit to ensure that you know local cultural rules well.5
A.Europeans prefer to pay the list price.
B.Many countries in the Middle East have long artistic traditions.
C.That will certainly allow you a more enjoyable day at the market.
D.People may be shocked at the long process of making a deal at souks.
E.There are many cultural differences between the West and the Middle East.
F.Nowadays, souks make special designs to create a customer-friendly environment.

Dear Paul,
I’m really happy to know that you’re interested in the Spring Festival — it’s the most important and traditional festival in China, just like Christmas in the UK. It usually comes in January or February, and marks the beginning of the new lunar year.
Before the festival, families clean their houses thoroughly to sweep away bad luck, which is a tradition passed down for generations. We also paste red couplets on the doors and hang up beautiful paper cuttings for good wishes. On New Year’s Eve, we get together with our family, enjoy a big dinner with traditional food like dumplings, and watch the Spring Festival Gala on TV. At midnight, fireworks light up the sky to welcome the new year!
If you’d like, you’re more than welcome to join us this year! I’m sure you’ll have a wonderful time experiencing this special holiday with my family.
Best wishes,
Li Hua

Companies are used to celebrating addition. Profits, customers and share prices should go up rather than fall. Larger numbers are a measure of career success: managers get promoted by taking on more reports, running higher budgets and earning bigger salaries.
Companies are not always against subtraction (减法) . Though not a welcome one, reducing costs is a necessary part of management, which is often undervalued. The best bosses are those who take things away as well as add them on. That means clearing time for employees to get work done. Meetings are almost always called by bosses, but only some of them are useful. Shopify, an e-commerce company, began the year by subtracting 12,000 meetings from their schedules, and reported a rise in productivity as a result.
Subtraction is not just about removing day-to-day distractions (干扰) . It’s also about taking decisions to kill off projects and products that are going nowhere, and to focus efforts on the most important parts. Peter Drucker, a management theorist, was a supporter of “planned subtraction” , so that resources that are tied up in minor activities are freed for more profitable use. Bosses should, he advised, always ask the same question of every detail of the company: “If we did not do this, would it be any different ”
In The Case for Good Jobs, a new book, Zeynep Ton of MIT Sloan School of Management argues that doing less can often make sense. Costco, a famous American supermarket that believes in the “smart loss of sales”, has purposely limited product choices. That means it can focus its buying power more effectively, forecast demand more accurately and use its employees’ time more productively. “Less” may not sound like a great result for customers, but at some point choice is deeply tiring. When you have spent more time trying to decide what to watch on a streaming service than it takes to go to the cinema and watch the same film twice, few choices seem pretty attractive.
4.Why does the author mention the company Shopify in paragraph 2
A.To present a fact.
B.To draw a conclusion.
C.To support an opinion.
D.To make a comparison.
5.Which statement does Peter Drucker most likely agree with
A.Companies should quit unpromising tasks.
B.Bosses should give up profits for resources.
C.Bosses shouldn’t remove everyday distractions.
D.Companies should focus on some unfinished work.
6.Which of the following measures is regarded as effective “doing less” commercially
A.Stores give customers more time to shop.
B.Cinemas run only one particular film a day.
C.Streaming websites upload more new movies.
D.Supermarkets offer a limited variety of goods.
7.What is the best title of the text
A.The best companies celebrate addition.
B.The best bosses know how to subtract work.
C.Companies use numbers to measure success.
D.Smart bosses go against the idea of subtraction.
Few buildings in the world inspire as much admiration and debate as the Sydney Opera House. Originally planned as a state-of-the-art center for the performing arts, the project began with an international design competition that captured global attention. Out of many submissions, Danish architect Jorn Utzon’s daring proposal — characterized by its unique, sail-like shells — stood out as an brave vision that promised to redefine Sydney’s skyline.
The design, however, was met with both enthusiasm and uncertainty. Utzon’s innovative concept broke away from traditional architectural rules and immediately aroused questions about its practical feasibility: While many admired the originality of the design, engineers and critics were concerned about the complex technical issues that lay ahead. These early debates signaled the considerable challenges that the project would soon face.
As construction began, the reality of conducting such an ambitious design became apparent. The project suffered from significant delays, rising cost, and intense political disagreements. These issues not only strained the relationships among government officials, engineers and the architect but also sparked a wider public debate over whether the spending in bold art was worthwhile or not. The mounting expenses and technical problems forced several compromises (妥协), leaving many to wonder if the vision was worth the efforts.
Despite the setbacks and controversies, the Sydney Opera House eventually emerged as a celebrated masterpiece of modern architecture. Over time, the building transformed from a subject of public criticism into a lasting symbol of creative achievement. Today, it is not merely a venue for performances but also a landmark that has reshaped Sydney’s cultural landscape. Its journey — from initial conception through troubled construction to eventual approval — illustrates the challenging path of translating visionary ideas into reality.
The Opera House’s legacy serves as a reminder that innovation and progress frequently come with significant obstacles. Its history reflects the delicate balance between artistic ambition and practical limits — a lesson that continues to inspire debates on public spending, architectural unity, and the value of daring ideas in modern society.
8.What do we know about Utzon’s proposal
A.It gained global attention and was praised as economical.
B.It was accounted as adventurous and featured a striking shape.
C.It was in line with traditional designs with few modern adaptations.
D.It was noted for its originality but considered by most as unworkable.
9.What can be inferred about public opinion over time
A.It was indifferent throughout the project’s history.
B.It mainly focused on the financial issues during construction.
C.It shifted from doubt to recognition as the building gained praise.
D.It remained critical of the Opera House even after its completion.
10.What lesson do we learn from the story of the Opera House
A.Artistic ideas are always accomplished with unavoidable compromises.
B.Brave ideas require balancing creative vision with practical challenges.
C.Practical problems are a sign that artistic ambition is misguided.
D.Innovative projects are normally prevented by technical difficulties.
11.Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text
A.Jorn Utzon: the Talent Behind the Sydney Opera House
B.Architectural Innovation: the Achievements of the Opera House
C.Overcoming Challenges: the Construction of the Sydney Opera House
D.The Opera House: the Stormy Journey Towards an Artistic Landmark

“Kidults valuing their childhood and holding on to childlike emotion may be needed in such a rough and dry society,“ said Professor Lee Sojung. 15 It could give children and their parents books, movies and cartoon shows to enjoy together. He may be right.
Tim Greenhalgh, another professor, explained that some kidults just refused to grow up. 16 Kidults would like to forget their age and openly show their fear of society and adulthood. “So, they can escape from increasingly stressful lives hard to handle.” Greenhalgh said.

I was excited to participated in my first summer camp and curious to know who I would meet and make friends with. I knew deep down in my heart it would be a wonderful experience.
The first day were tests to see what level swimmers were in the pool and a treasure hunt to help us learn our way around the campground. Our second day was extremely hot, so one of the camp counselors took us to the best place for cooling down.“Woo-hoo!“ the counselor shouted as he led the way into the shallow part of the lake. We all ran after him like a bunch of ducklings and happily splashed around. Well, all of us except for one kid named Max, who sat on the dock looking the opposite of us.
That was a surprising thing to me. The day before, when we took tests to see what level swimmers we were in the pool, Max turned out to be the most advanced level possible. Not just in one thing, but in everything: sidestroke, backstroke, the crawl, breaststroke, holding breath underwater. Max was, no question, the very best swimmer at camp.“So why was he sitting miserably ”
I swam over and said,“I’m sorry to bother you, but I’m wondering why you’ re not in the water. After all, we found out yesterday that you’re kind of a half fish.“ “OK, I’ll tell you, but it’s a little embarrassing.” he said,“Even though I’m kind of a half fish, I’ m afraid of real fish and of anything else that might be swimming in the murky water. I swim only in clear swimming pools. I’ve never actually gone in a lake.“

根据全文内容,特别是第一段“Few buildings in the world inspire as much admiration and debate as the Sydney Opera House. Originally planned as a state-of-the-art center for the performing arts, the project began with an international design competition that captured global attention. Out of many submissions, Danish architect Jorn Utzon’s daring proposal — characterized by its unique, sail-like shells — stood out as an brave vision that promised to redefine Sydney’s skyline.(世界上鲜有建筑能像悉尼歌剧院一样,既令人叹为观止又引发激烈争议。

Europeans should try to stay indoors if ash from Iceland’s volcano starts settling, the World Health Organization (WHO) warned Friday as small amounts fell in Iceland, Scotland and Norway.
WHO spokesman Daniel Epstein said the microscopic ash is potentially dangerous for people when it starts to reach the Earth because inhaled particles (微粒) can enter the lungs and cause respiratory (呼吸的) problems. And he also said Europeans who go outside might want to consider wearing a mask.
Other experts, however, weren’t convinced the volcanic ash would have a major effect on people’s health and said WHO’s warnings were “hysterical”. They said volcanic ash was much less dangerous than cigarette smoke or pollution. Volcanic ash is made of fine particles of fragmented volcanic rock. It is light gray to black and can be as fine as talcum powder. During a volcanic eruption, the ash can be breathed deep into the lungs and cause irritation even in healthy people. But once it falls from a greater distance—like from the cloud currently hovering above Europe— its health effects are often minimal, experts say.
“Not all particles are created equal,” said Ken Donaldson, a professor of respiratory toxicology at the University of Edinburgh, “In the great scheme of things, volcanic ash is not all that harmful.” And he said most Europeans’ exposure to volcanic ash would be negligible and that only those in the near districts of the Icelandic volcano would likely be at risk.
Dr. Stephen Spiro, a professor of respiratory medicine and deputy chair of the British Lung Foundation, said the further the particles travel, the less dangerous they will be. “The cloud has already passed over northern Scotland and we haven’t heard of any ill effects there,” he said. Spiro said to wear masks or stay indoors to avoid volcanic ash was “over the top” and “a bit hysterical”
4.What can you team in paragraph 3
A.The volcanic ash had no impact on Europeans.
B.Other experts highly approved of WHO’s warnings.
C.The volcanic ash posed more risks than cigarette smoke.
D.Even healthy people could experience discomfort due to the ash.
5.According to Ken Donaldson, who are most likely to be at risk due to the volcanic ash
A.Europeans living in big cities.
B.People who often smoke cigarettes.
C.Those staying outdoors for a long time.
D.People in the near districts of the Icelandic volcano.
6.What does the underlined word “hysterical” in paragraph 5 most probably mean
A.Amazing. B.Practical. C.Valuable. D.Overstated.
7.What is the text mainly about
A.Panic caused by volcanic ash.
B.WHO’s warnings on volcanic ash.
C.Views on volcanic ash’s health risks.
D.Volcanic ash’s environmental effects.
As the designer of a Paralympic mascot of 2022 Beijing Olympics, Jiang Yufan has experienced the most unforgettable life for the past four years. 12
Born in 1998 in Yichun, Heilongjiang province, Jiang Yufan was influenced by the strong festive atmosphere in her hometown, where red lanterns hang everywhere.
As a junior student at the Jilin University of Arts then, Jiang said her original design was a deer, but she later discovered that many of her peers were also using deer in their designs. So she changed it and drew a Chinese knot and a dumpling instead. 13 Then Jiang revised her design again, and in 2018 she submitted the first draft of her now winning entry — a Chinese knot and a red lantern — both referring to Chinese culture.
Then the process of revising and improving it was demanding. One difficulty was how to make a lantern look more alive. Ideas to add antlers and wings to the lantern failed to satisfy either the designer or her team. Finally, they decided to make the lantern patterned, adding doves and the outline of the Temple of Heaven in Beijing. 14 Additionally, the team added a splash of snow across Shuey Rhon Rhon’s face to make its eyes stand out. And the area around the Olympic emblem is able to glow. Altogether, her team shuttled between Changchun and Beijing more than 30 times between late 2018 and 2019, to show their drafts to the Beijing Organizing Committee for the 2022 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games, and often worked very late into the night. 15
Finally last August in 2019, she and her team got the very good news from Beijing. Their hard work had paid off, and Shuey Rhon Rhon was to be the official mascot for the 2022 Beijing Paralympic Games.
Jiang really hopes her lantern will warm the world and light up people’s dreams. It’s a sentiment in line with the spirit of the Olympics and a necessary function of a good design. 16 The first “rhon” implies inclusiveness, and the second implies integration. Jiang hopes that once the Games open, Shuey Rhon Rhon will become just as popular as Bing Dwen Dwen, this year’s Winter Olympic mascot, lighting up the lives of billions around the world who will watch its athletes inspire and excite.

C.They became the inspiration for her design.

When Mr. Moose announced the paper airplane contest, all the students were very excited. Paul, who was on the wrestling (摔跤) team, said to other students. “I am the strongest. And I will be able to throw my airplane the farthest.”
However, another student, Brian, was thinking how he could win. He did not play any sports and was not very strong. But he loved airplanes and really wanted to win the contest.
Brian knew what he had to do. He went to the store and bought a big pile of paper. When he got home, he took the paper into the backyard. He took a piece of paper and folded (折叠) an airplane. It didn’t go very far, so Brian took another piece and folded another airplane and threw it. This airplane went a little farther. Brian kept folding different kinds of airplanes and throwing them. Some went very far and some did not. Finally, when Brian had used all the paper, he walked up to the airplane that had flown the farthest and picked it up.

Dear Paul,
I’m really happy to know that you’re interested in the Spring Festival — it’s the most important and traditional festival in China, just like Christmas in the UK.
Best wishes,
Li Hua

Last summer, 17-year-old Li Mei from Chengdu stepped off the plane in Paris, carrying her beloved erhu — a traditional Chinese two-stringed instrument that was passed down from her grandmother. As part of a youth cultural exchange program, she had dreamed of this moment for years, yet the weight of representing her heritage in a foreign land left her palms sweaty. Little did she know that this trip would spark an extraordinary musical creation.
During a workshop at a local art school, Li met Pierre, a French violinist who was fascinated by her instrument’s attractive sound. “It’s like the voice of ancient China,” he remarked with excitement, gently plucking (拨) the erhu’s strings. Inspired by each other’s music, they decided to mix the soulful melodies of the erhu with the dynamic range of the violin for a performance at the upcoming Bastille Day celebration.
As they practiced in a sunlit studio overlooking the Seine, Li taught Pierre how to imitate raindrops with quick bow movements on the erhu, while Pierre showed her how to weave Western harmonies into the Chinese folk tune “Jasmine Flower.” The integration created a charming soundscape that neither had imagined possible. On the performance night, their piece “Silk Road Echoes” received thunderous applause. The audience were amazed at how the erhu’s sad tones danced with the violin’s vigorous (有活力的) melodies.
What began as a summer experiment blossomed into lasting friendship and something far greater. Today, Li and Pierre co-teach virtual music classes, connecting students in Chengdu and Lyon through weekly “global jam sessions.” Their students cooperate on pieces that mix erhu with guitar or Peking opera with jazz. Li often tells her pupils, “Music has no borders; it’s a language that turns differences into harmonies.” When traditions meet with open hearts, they don’t conflict; they compose something entirely new.
4.Why did Li Mei bring her erhu to Paris
A.To share Chinese music culture. B.To give it to her friend as a present.
C.To display it at a local studio. D.To teach students full-time.
5.What contributed to the lasting cooperation of Li Mei and Pierre
A.Their common and deep love for traditional Chinese music.
B.Their successful performance and inspiration from each other’s music.
C.The opportunity to participate in the Bastille Day celebration together.
D.The desire to teach music in a virtual way to students around the world.
6.Why was “Silk Road Echoes” well received by the audience
A.It reflected the beauty of nature wonderfully.
B.It featured traditional Chinese folk performance.
C.It was a musical handshake between civilizations.
D.It was an excellent musical instrument exhibition.
7.Which might be the most suitable title for the text
A.A Musical Journey Across Continents
B.The Journey of Traditional Instruments
C.Cultural Exchange in Paris: A Summer Adventure
D.Silk Road Echoes: Bridging Cultures Through Music
Though the spread of good reproduction of works of art can be culturally valuable, museums continue to promote the special status of original work and highlight the authenticity of its exhibits. Unfortunately, this seems to place severe limitations on the kind of experience offered to visitors.
One limitation is related to the way the museum presents its exhibits. Art museums are often called “treasure houses”. We are reminded of this even before we view a collection by the presence of security guards who keep us away from the exhibits. In addition, a major collection like that of London’s National Gallery is housed in numerous rooms, where a single piece of work is likely to be worth more than all the average visitor possesses. In a society that judges the personal status of the individual so much by their material worth, it is therefore difficult not to be impressed by one’s own relative “worthlessness” in such an environment.
Furthermore, consideration of the “value” of the original work in its treasure house setting impresses upon the viewer that since these works were originally produced, they have been assigned a huge value in terms of money by some person or institution more powerful than themselves. Evidently, nothing the viewer thinks about the work is going to alter that value, and so today’s viewer is discouraged from trying to extend that spontaneous, immediate, self- reliant kind of interpretation which would originally have met the work.
The visitor may then be struck by the strangeness of seeing such a variety of paintings, drawings and sculptures brought together in an environment for which they were not originally created. This “displacement effect” is further heightened by the huge volume of exhibits. In the case of a major collection, there are probably more works on display than we could realistically view in weeks or even months.
This is particularly distressing because time seems to be a vital factor in the appreciation of all art forms. A fundamental difference between paintings and other art forms is that there is no prescribed time over which a painting is viewed. Operas, novels and poems are read in a prescribed time sequence, whereas a picture has no clear place at which to start viewing, or at which to finish. Thus art works themselves encourage us to view them superficially without appreciating the richness of de tail and labor that is involved.
Consequently, the dominant critical approach becomes that of the art historian, a specialized academic approach devoted to “discovering the meaning” of art within the cultural context of its time. This is in harmony, with the museum’s function, since the approach is dedicated to seeking out and conserving “authentic”, “original” readings of the exhibits.
8.The writer mentions London’s National Gallery to illustrate ______.
A.the undesirable cost to a nation of maintaining a huge collection of art
B.the need to put individual well- being above large- scale artistic schemes
C.the conflict that may arise in society between financial and artistic values
D.the negative effect a museum can have on visitors’ opinion of themselves
9.The writer says that today viewers may be unwilling to criticize a work because they ______.
A.lack the knowledge needed B.fear it may have financial implications
C.have no real concept of the work’s value D.feel their personal reaction is of no significance
10.The appreciation of a painting does not ______.
A.call for a specific beginning or ending B.involve direct contact with an audience
C.require a specific location for performance D.need the involvement of other professionals
11.Which of the following might be the best title of the passage
A.Original work: reduction to value of art works B.Original work: art historians’ bread and butter
C.Original work: killer of artistic appreciation D.Original work: substitute for reproduction

As anyone who has tried to lose weight knows, realistic goal-setting generally produces the best results. That is partially 17 it seems that people who have realistic goals actually work more efficiently, and make more effort, to achieve those goals.
What is far less understood by scientists, 18 , are the potentially harmful effects of goal-setting.
Newspapers relay (转发) accounts of goal-setting in industries and businesses up and down both Wall Street and Main Street, yet there has been 19 little research on how setting goals may have lead to the current economic crisis, and unethical (不道德) behavior in general.
“Goals are widely used because they really have beneficial effects. And yet, the same 20 that can push people to make more effort in a better way could also motivate people to be more likely to have unethical (不道德) behaviors,” says Maurice Schweitzer, an associate professor at Penn’s Wharton School.

As a result, the company failed to motivate its workers to work harder.

Last Thursday when the competition exam ended, I changed two answers while the teacher was out answering a call. The eraser marks still stayed at the corner, where revising the answers turned the grade from 95 into 97 — this lying number — My family was really in great financial difficulty. Deep in my pencil case hid Jack’s draft paper, which dropped from his desk right at my feet, covered with his neat problem-solving steps.
That night at dinner, Mom handed me the last chicken leg, her fingertips still smelling of dish soap from the 24-hour diner night shift. “Principal Miller called”, she coughed, “all of the participants of the competition will attend the award ceremony next Monday, and as a winner, you’ll make a speech in front of all the audience.” I didn’t answer but just counted the pieces of cloth for repair on her apron (围裙), remembering her nighttime coughs during overtime shifts. My chopsticks tapped the bowl edge. The real winner should be Jack, who always stayed after class to explain equations (方程式) on the whiteboard. His score was 96.
Rain tapped against the classroom windows the next day. I found Jack in the empty classroom, chewing a dry bread at his desk. His glasses were foggy from the wet walk to school. “Congratulations,” he wiped his glasses, pulling his bag with holes showing the stuffing, “Dad’s lost his job, and I really need that scholarship… never mind.”
Moonlight fell on my speech paper titled “Honesty and Hard Work.” I remembered Jack helping me with math after class, his finger drawing numbers in the air.“ Like this,” he’d say, giving me his eraser when mine broke.
I couldn’t fall asleep all that night. An inner voice echoed: “Do what makes you sleep well.” I stood outside the teachers’ office early the next morning. Through the door crack, I saw Principal Miller’s coffee cup steaming.

【答案】1.C 2.A 3.C
Can I do other activities as well 部分中的“and different entertainment every evening.”
【答案】4.A 5.B 6.C 7.D
根据第一段中的“Last summer, 17-year-old Li Mei from Chengdu stepped off the plane in Paris, carrying her beloved erhu — a traditional Chinese two-stringed instrument that was passed down from her grandmother. As part of a youth cultural exchange program, she had dreamed of this moment for years, yet the weight of representing her heritage in a foreign land left her palms sweaty.(去年夏天,来自成都的17岁的李梅在巴黎走下飞机,手里拿着她心爱的二胡——一种从她祖母那里传下来的中国传统两弦乐器。作为青年文化交流项目的一部分,她多年来一直梦想着这一刻,但在异国他乡代表她的传统的压力让她手心冒汗)”可知, 李梅是作为青年文化交流项目的一部分来到巴黎,她携带的二胡是中国传统乐器,并且她深知自己肩负着在异国展示中国文化遗产的重任。 由此可推知,李梅把二胡带到巴黎是为了分享中国音乐文化。故选A。
根据第二段中的“Inspired by each other’s music, they decided to mix the soulful melodies of the erhu with the dynamic range of the violin for a performance at the upcoming Bastille Day celebration.(受到彼此音乐的启发, 他们决定将二胡的深情旋律与小提琴的动态范围融为一体, 在即将到来的巴士底日庆祝活动中演出。)”以及第三段中的“The integration created a charming soundscape that neither had imagined possible. On the performance night, their piece “Silk Road Echoes” received thunderous applause.(这种融合创造了一种迷人的音景, 这是两人都无法想象的。演出当晚, 他们的作品《丝路回声》赢得了雷鸣般的掌声。)”可知, 他们成功的表演和从彼此的音乐中获得的灵感促成了李梅和皮埃尔的持久合作。故选B。
6.推理判断题。根据第三段中的“The audience were amazed at how the erhu’s sad tones danced with the violin’s vigorous (有活力的) melodies.(二胡悲怆的音调与小提琴铿锵有力的旋律交相呼应, 令观众惊叹不已。)”
【答案】8.D 9.D 10.A 11.C
根据第二段中“In addition, a major collection like that of London’s National Gallery is housed in numerous rooms, where a single piece of work is likely to be worth more than all the average visitor possesses. In a society that judges the personal status of the individual so much by their material worth, it is difficult not to be impressed by one’s own relative “worthlessness” in such an environment.(此外,像伦敦国家美术馆那样的大型藏品被安置在许多房间里,在那里,一件作品的价值可能比普通游客拥有的所有物品都要高。在一个以物质价值来判断个人地位的社会中,在这样的环境中,一个人很难不意识到自己相对的“毫无价值”)”可知,伦敦国家美术馆的大型藏品会让游客意识到自己相对来说“毫无价值”。因此,作者提到伦敦国家美术馆是为了说明博物馆对游客自我评价的负面影响。故选D。
9.推理判断题。根据第三段中“Evidently, nothing the viewer thinks about the work is going to alter that value, and so today’s viewer is discouraged from trying to extend that immediate and self-reliant kind of interpretation which would originally have met the work.(显然,观众对作品的任何想法都不会改变它的价值,所以今天的观众不愿意尝试扩展那种直接的、自主的解读,而这种解读本来是可以与作品相称的)”可知,今天的观众可能不愿意批评一件作品的原因是他们觉得自己的个人反应没有意义。故选D项。
根据倒数第二段中“Operas, novels and poems are read in a prescribed time sequence, whereas a picture has no clear place at which to start viewing, or at which to finish.(歌剧、小说和诗歌都是按照规定的时间顺序阅读的,而一幅画却没有明确的起点和终点)”可知,不同于其他艺术形式,欣赏一幅画作不需要特定的起点或终点。故选A项。

I took a deep breath and knocked on the principal’s door. Principal Miller’s coffee steam moved in the air as I showed my changed answers. “The real score should be 95,” I said, pointing at the faint eraser marks on the paper. “I changed two answers here and that’s how the grade went up to 97.” When I gave her Jack’s draft paper with the solution process written on it, she touched the sunlight on his handwriting. “Two wrongs don’t make a right,” she said, “but one brave act can fix two hearts.” Her pen added both our names — mine in blue ink, Jack’s in gold.
The ceremony arrived, and Principal Miller announced two scholarship winners: Jack and me. The crowd whispered until she raised my speech paper. “Look closely,” she said. Under the title “Honesty and Hard Work”, faint pencil marks showed where I’d written “Cheating” then erased it. “Growth is when mistakes become lessons,” she explained. Jack’s confused eyes met mine until Principal Miller pointed to his repaired backpack — His mother had mended the holes with cloth. “Some fix errors with erasers,” she said, “others mend hearts with threads.” When stage lights hit us, the 95 and 96 on our certificates blurred into one golden glow.
