These pictures show how technologies / smartphones make our lives easier.
The smartphone is important. We use it to do many things. There are lots of apps on it, like social media apps to chat with friends, or study apps to help with homework.
Smartphones also make digital payment easy—we can pay for snacks or toys by scanning a code, instead of using cash.
We can also use smartphones to rent shared bikes. First, we scan the QR code (二维码)on the bike and then we can ride it. That’s so convenient.
What does each picture show
The shared bikes are expensive.
The girl can only pay by cash.
It seems that the girl doesn’t like the food.

1 I've studied in China for a year and now it's the Christmas holiday. I've been back in the UK for three days, but it feels like a century! It's amazing to see my family. Also, I really love Christmas and the delicious food. However, I've had some digital problems here.
E.g. This math class feels like a century.

2 Today, I wanted to get some vegetables and meat from a shop. I decided to ride a shared bike to get there. But it took forever to find a bike! I finally found an old one. But that 20-minute ride cost me an arm and a leg - 4.8 pounds!
E.g. The bus took forever to come.
It takes (sb)... to do sth意为"(某人)做某事花费了……(时间、金钱或努力等)”,这个结构中的it真正指代的内容是后面的to do sth。E.g. It takes me 20 minutes to get to work every day. / It takes a lot of patience to teach young children.

an arm and a leg是个英语习语,指很多钱。cost sb an arm and a leg意为“代价高昂,价格非常高”。句子中破折号后则补充说明了an arm and a leg的具体所指。
E.g. The trip cost him all his savings.
3 In the shop, I quickly got everything I needed. I wanted to pay with my smartphone. I asked the shopkeeper to show the QR code, but she didn't understand! Next, I tried to use my digital wallet, but the shop's payment system didn't work. The shopkeeper told me to use cash. As I always make digital payments in China, I never carry my wallet. I had to go home to get some cash.
作者的情感从从容(quickly got everything)—焦急(tried to use)—无奈妥协(had to go home)变化自然,容易引起共鸣。
I never carry my wallet的原因。E.g. As it was raining, we decided to stay indoors.
4 When I got home, I was so tired that I gave up on cooking. I ordered my favourite dishes through an app instead, but the delivery was really slow. When my dishes finally arrived 90 minutes later, they were stone-cold! I had to heat them one by one in the oven. I felt tired and hungry.
give up on... E.g. She has given up on visiting the museum today. / He almost gave up on his dream of becoming an actor.
order dish through an app 通过app订餐
5 Except for today, I've had a great holiday. However, I'm
looking forward to going back to China. The technology there lets me live a more convenient life!
except for... 之外”。E.g. He hasn't eaten a thing except for an apple. / The room was silent except for the TV.
E.g. We’re looking forward to seeing you. / We all look forward to having a school trip next month.

Think and Share
1. Why does the writer say that technology makes life more convenient in China
Because in China, mobile payment apps like Alipay and WeChat pay are widely accepted, however, in the UK, cash and credit card are still commonly used.
In China, the shared bikes and other public transportation are easy to find and affordable(负担得起), but in the UK, finding a shared bike is difficult and the cost is higher.
In China, food delivery is fast and reliable(可靠的),but in the UK, the delivery is very slow.
2. Why do you think digital technology is so popular in China
Because it’s super convenient. You can pay for anything using your phone. No need to carry cash or card.
Many young people in China love trying new technologies, so new apps and digital services spread very quickly.
