(2024·河南许昌高一上期末)When Hurricane Ian hit Florida, Karen Lauder refused to leave her home because she was wrong about the intensity (强度) of the storm. Karen is 84 years old and depends on a wheelchair to get around because she is missing a leg. Her son, Johnny Lauder, tried repeatedly to get her to leave, but she refused.
Johnny and his whole family live within a few blocks of one another. They kept in touch with Karen as the storm continued violently outside, watching the water rising dangerously all around them. When Karen reported that the water in her house had reached her bottom, Johnny knew he had to take action.
First, Johnny ensured his sons and their pets were taken care of. Then, he jumped out of a window and began to swim. Johnny used to work as a rescue swimmer. He is obviously a strong swimmer, but the floodwater was filled with dangerous materials. There was also a strong current (水流), and he had to swim against it for most of his trip to Karen's. As he made his way through the water, Johnny stopped periodically to snap selfies (自拍) to show his worried family that he was okay.
Johnny was racing against the clock. He knew he only had a short period of time to get there before the water rose above Karen's head. It took him 40 minutes to swim four blocks. The sound of Karen shouting inside was music to his ears!
“If it would've been 20 minutes later, she wouldn't be here，” Johnny said. “She's never been happier to see me.”
Karen is now safe, although she is in the hospital being treated for infections (感染) she got in the water. The family have all lost everything they owned, including their houses, but they're grateful just to be here.

(2024·福建泉州高一上学期期末)For long, Preifer Fall Trail was a most popular attraction in Big Sur. Annually, thousands of people hiked the trail. Unfortunately, the trail, along with stairs, signs, railings, an observation station and wooden bridges, was destroyed in the 2008 Basin Complex Fire. But now a new trail has risen from the burned land.
With its amazing rocky coastline and mountains, Big Sur, the writer Henry Miller once said, is “the face of the earth as the creator intended it to look”. But the landscape always suffers natural disasters. There have been three major wildfires in Big Sur in the past years. “You can still see the impacts there，” said John Hiles, a state parks repair team leader, pointing to black marks 30 feet up a huge redwood.
Parks planners designed a new track, moving the trail out of the river to reduce its impact on the environment. People from the California protection group, state parks department and the nonprofit organization put in 66，000 hours of work over the past four years. They built 160 redwood stairs and dragged hundreds of 16－foot－long redwood sticks by hand to build railings. They removed 4，150 square feet of old building stuff, enough to cover a basketball court. They used iron cables and pulleys (缆线和滑轮) to build a 70－foot－long wooden bridge over the hills. “Nature is probably the best place to learn，” Hiles said. “More than any college or school, you learn so many life lessons out here.”
However, the huge Soberanes Fire swept through the area in 2016, putting a stop to the work. When they began again in 2017, great river storms flooded the area and damaged part of Highway 1. Everybody gathered around this project. They saw the loss. They missed it. They wanted it to come back. They kept combining efforts. It's been a long journey, but worth the wait.

(2024·江苏盐城高一上期末)Tens of thousands of honeybees in Spain's Canary Islands can now add “survived a volcano” to their wish list.
A report on Saturday told the story of five hives (蜂箱) of honeybees that were left unattended after the eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano in La Palma, which happened on September 19, for about 50 days (their beekeeper had been forced to leave the area). When the beekeeper returned, he found the hives covered in volcanic ash.
Inside the hives, however, the situation was completely different. To the beekeeper's surprise, he found tens of thousands of live honeybees, who had managed to carry on despite the heat and harmful gases released by the volcano. They may have also gotten lucky because they were covered with light ash with small holes, which allowed air to pass through the hives.
Not all honeybees on La Palma were so lucky, though. Spanish news service EFE reported that a group of hives closest to the Cumbre Vieja had been covered completely by lava, hot volcano matter, which killed them.
Antonio Quesada, a spokesperson for the GranCanaria Beekeepers Association, said that a key part of the bees' survival was propolis (蜂胶). Produced by bees, propolis is a sticky thing made from resins (树脂) the insects collect from plants. Often called “bee glue”， propolis is often used to smooth surfaces or cover the space in hives.
Quesada said the La Palma bees managed to seal themselves inside their hives to protect themselves from the volcanic gases, which can be harmful to people, animals, plants, and buildings. The bees also thought about food and ate from the honey stores they had inside their hives.
“It's unbelievable how such a tiny animal that has been around for hundreds of thousands of years can have that ability to survive，” Quesada said.
That's not all they did, though. Although they sealed themselves in their hives, they made sure to leave a very small pathway to the outside so they could get out one day.

(2024·河南许昌高一上期末)When Hurricane Ian hit Florida, Karen Lauder refused to leave her home because she was wrong about the intensity (强度) of the storm. Karen is 84 years old and depends on a wheelchair to get around because she is missing a leg. Her son, Johnny Lauder, tried repeatedly to get her to leave, but she refused.

A report on Saturday told the story of five hives (蜂箱) of honeybees that were left unattended after the eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano in La Palma, which happened on September 19, for about 50 days (their beekeeper had been forced to leave the area). Inside the hives, however, the situation was completely different. To the beekeeper's surprise, he found tens of thousands of live honeybees, who had managed to carry on despite the heat and harmful gases released by the volcano. They may have also gotten lucky because they were covered with light ash with small holes, which allowed air to pass through the hives.
Not all honeybees on La Palma were so lucky, though. Spanish news service EFE reported that a group of hives closest to the Cumbre Vieja had been covered completely by lava, hot volcano matter, which killed them.
Antonio Quesada, a spokesperson for the GranCanaria Beekeepers Association, said that a key part of the bees' survival was propolis (蜂胶). Produced by bees, propolis is a sticky thing made from resins (树脂) the insects collect from plants. Often called “bee glue”， propolis is often used to smooth surfaces or cover the space in hives.
Quesada said the La Palma bees managed to seal themselves inside their hives to protect themselves from the volcanic gases, which can be harmful to people, animals, plants, and buildings. The bees also thought about food and ate from the honey stores they had inside their hives.
