That morning cup of coffee may be linked to a lower risk of dying, researchers from a study published Monday in The Annals of Internal Medicine concluded. Those who drank 1.5 to 3.5 cups of coffee per day, even with a teaspoon of sugar, were up to 30 per cent less likely to die during the study period than those who didn’t drink coffee. Those who drank unsweetened coffee were 16 to 21 per cent less likely to die during the study period, with those drinking about three cups per day having the lowest risk of death when compared with non-coffee drinkers.
Researchers analyzed coffee consumption data collected from the U. K. Biobank, a large medical database with health information from people across Britain. They analyzed demographic, lifestyle and dietary information collected from more than 170,000 people between the ages of 37 and 73 over a median follow-up period of seven years. The risk of dying remained lower for people who drank both decaffeinated and caffeinated coffee.
“It’s huge. There are very few things that reduce your risk of dying by 30 per cent,” said Dr. Christina Wee, an associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School.
There are, however, major caveats to interpreting this research, she added. This is an observational study, which means the data cannot conclusively prove that coffee itself lowers the risk of dying; there may be other lifestyle factors contributing to that lower the risk of dying among people who drink coffee, like a healthy diet or a consistent exercise routine.
Despite the encouraging evidence about coffee, there isn’t enough data to suggest that people who don’t currently drink coffee should add a stop to Starbucks during their morning routines, Dr. Wee said. And even keen coffee drinkers shouldn’t use the study to justify endless cups of coffee. The study showed that the benefits of coffee reduced for people who drank more than 4.5 cups of coffee each day. Past studies have shown that consuming “extreme amounts” — over seven cups per day — can lead to adverse effects, she said.
4. Which of the following is a finding of the study
A. Having moderate coffee intake may cut the death risk.
B. Putting sugar in coffee may take away its good effects.
C. Decaffeinated coffee doesn’t help reduce death risk.
D People who don’t drink coffee have a lower death risk.

The first thing most of us do when working with people from a new culture is to learn about differences. And there are very sensible reasons to do so. It helps you avoid cultural misunderstandings. But focusing on differences alone can have its downsides. For one thing, there's a likely chance you’ll be wrong. Focusing on differences can also be quite mentally taxing. So, if you don’t focus on differences, what then can you do to be more effective across cultures In our experience, an equally reasonable and highly effective alternative technique is to focus on similarities. And this change in perspective can have some pretty powerful effects.
If you think about it, this is probably exactly how you establish connections and relationships in your own culture. You don’t approach a person thinking about all the potential ways you could be different; instead, you naturally gravitate to similarities, finding things you might have in common to form the basis of a relationship. Although we tend to approach cross-cultural interactions quite differently, the same technique actually works just as well across cultures. When focused on similarities, you’re open to — and, in fact, looking for — a potential connection. Perhaps it’s a hobby you share in common with a coworker, or maybe both of you at a business meeting abroad have families you’re trying to connect with. By focusing on similarities you have the power to create connections and build relationships that either eliminate cultural differences or make them irrelevant.
Another advantage of this approach is that your coworkers are more likely to feel that you see them as an individual. On the other hand, focusing on similarities means you are suited to the particularities of the specific person you are interacting with. This is more likely to result in the other party feeling seen and heard for who they are, and can kick off a positive lift of mutual (相互的) openness and trust.
8. Why do people focus on differences in a multicultural company
A. To emphasize their own culture. B. To reduce unnecessary troubles.
C. To take advantage of other culture. D. To make the workplace multicultural.
9. What’s the significance of focusing on similarities in a multicultural company
A. The origin of the hobbies. B. The start of work efficiency.
C. The foundation of connections. D. The improvement of your family.
10. What does the underlined word “eliminate” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Maintain. B. Strengthen. C. Remove. D. Worsen.
11. Which is the advantage of focusing on similarities in the last paragraph
A. Making others feel valued. B. Making yourself centred.
C. Indicating your interest. D. Making others adapt to your culture.
D
When it comes to being fit and healthy, we’re often reminded to aim to walk 10,000 steps per day. This can annoy many, especially when we’re busy with work and other commitments — and yet where did this number actually come from
The 10,000 steps a day target seems to have come about from a trade name pedometer sold in 1965 by Yamasa Clock in Japan. The device was called “Manpo-kei”, which translates to “10,000 steps meter”. This was a marketing tool for the device and has seemed to have stuck across the world as the daily step target. It's even included in daily activity targets by popular smartwatches, such as Fitbit.
Research has since investigated the 10,000 steps a day target. But while some research has shown health benefits at 10,000 steps, recent research from Harvard Medical School has shown that, on average, around 4.400 steps a day is enough to significantly lower the risk of death in women. This was when compared to only walking around 2,700 steps daily. The more steps people walked, the lower their risk of dying was, before leveling off at around 7,500 steps a day. No additional benefits were seen with more steps. Although it’s uncertain whether similar results would be seen in men, it’s one example of how moving a little bit more daily can improve health and lower risk of death.
Recent research at the University of Texas has also demonstrated that if you’re walking fewer than 5,000 steps a day, your body is less able to metabolize (新陈代谢) fat the following day. A buildup of fat in the body can also increase a person’s likelihood of developing cardiovascular disease and diabetes. This is further supported by previous research which shows people who walked less than 4,000 steps a day could not change this decreased fat metabolism.
If you want to increase how many steps you get daily, or simply want to move more, one easy way includes walking to work if possible, or taking part of an online exercise program if you’re working from home. Meeting with friends for a walk — rather than in a cafe or pub — can also be useful.
12. What does the author think of the 10,000 steps per day
A. It is an upsetting target to achieve.
B. It is likely to go out of style quickly.
C. It is a rising tendency of mental health
D. It is effective in reducing pressure on work.
13. What does research from the Harvard Medical School suggest about the target
A. It matters as much as 7500 steps a day.
B. The more steps, the lower risk of death.
C. A bit more than the target can improve health.
D. About half that target appears to be beneficial.
14. What does the fourth paragraph mainly tell us
A. Absence of previous research. B. Recent findings of fat buildup.
C. Problems of less daily walking. D. Possible causes of physical challenges.
15. Which of the following is one of the suggested ways according to the passage
A. Working at home. B. Treating friends in a cafe or pub.
C. Driving lo work. D. Signing up for online exercise programs.

Summer vacation has begun for many of us, and chances are that your kids are spending their free time in front of a screen instead of enjoying the nice weather. We won’t repeat the warnings about children and screen time here, but we admit it: Pulling them away from video game can be tricky, as they’re so addicted. 16
Many botanical gardens and nature preserves offer programs tailored for children and families. These include yoga classes, treasure hunts, and flashlight evening walks. If no classes or activities are available, try encouraging your kids to feel the grass under their feet or notice the butterflies and insects that call the grounds their home. 17 When you get home, have them search for any similar ones in your backyard.
Sidewalk chalk, such as drawing butterflies on the pavement, is an old but reliable standby that can fire up your child’s imagination. Nevertheless, it can quickly become tiresome for your kids. 18 You could start a tic-tac-toe game (井字游戏) using sticks and rocks or go on a hike and give each other points for each animal or tree they see.
19 However, sometimes your kid isn’t into it — or is too little to hike any real distance. In that case, let them be the leader and decide your family’s direction. 20 It gives them a sense of ownership and responsibility to the activity and engages them a lot more.
A. However, sunshine and exercise might change their attitude.
B. Let them appreciate the different flowers and ask about their favorites.
C. To develop a sense of curiosity in children counts.
D. Have some ideas ready on the fly to keep them occupied.
E. That’s one of the masterpieces you can transform nature into.
F. You are not necessarily reaching the destination you want to reach.
G. A walk in the woods can be great for the whole family.
