Over the past three years,Kang Jian has created more than 400 dough sculptures (面塑) and become a city-level inheritor of this intangible cultural heritage in Mohe,Heilongjiang Province.
“When I was a little boy, every time my parents made dumplings, they would give me a small piece of dough,” he said.“I tried to make various animals—a rabbit,a fish,or a snail. The small, simple objects brought me lots of good childhood memories and planted the seeds of fine art, especially sculpture,in my heart.” Kang's parents were not financially (财务上) able to support his desire to study fine arts while he was at school. But he didn't give up.He spent his spare time after school studying drawing by himself.
Then,in December 2018,during a visit to a museum in Beijing,Kang, for the first time, got information about the intangible cultural heritage of dough sculpting, which attracted him greatly.“I was really excited to learn about dough sculpting,” he said.“Then I had the idea of taking my childhood interest up again.” He then spent 20 days learning skills from Bai Chunyu,a provincial-level inheritor of dough sculpting. And in August 2019,he got the chance to learn from another national-level inheritor.
Kang spent nearly all his spare time practicing, hoping to improve quickly.“To learn as much as possible during my 40 days there,I practiced every day from 6 am until late at night,” he said.“When I slept,I had to put my hands in hot water to relieve the pain. But all the efforts turned out to be worth it.”
In April,Kang completed the dough sculptures of 108 characters from the novel Outlaws of the Marsh after 16 months of work.“Most of my dough sculptures are traditional Chinese characters. In my mind, the real value of my dough sculpture as a national intangible cultural heritage lies in its connection with traditional Chinese culture. That's the charm and significance of the art,” he said.

An analysis of 15 studies involving nearly 50,000 people from four continents offers new insights into identifying the quantity of daily walking steps that will best improve adults' health and longevity(长寿).It also explores whether the ideal number of steps differs across people of different ages.
The analysis represents an effort to develop an evidence-based public health message about the benefits of physical activity. The often-repeated 10,000-step-a-day saying grew out of a decades-old marketing activity for a Japanese pedometer (计步器),with no science to back it up.
Led by physical-activity professor Amanda Paluch,an international group of scientists who formed the Steps for Health Collaborative found that taking more steps a day helps lower the risk of early death.More specifically, for adults 60 and older, the risk of early death leveled off at about 6,000-8,000 steps per day, which means that more steps than that provided no additional benefit for longevity.Adults younger than 60 saw the risk of early death stabilize at about 8,000-10,000 steps per day.
“So,what we saw was this continuing reduction in risk as steps increase, until it levels off. Interestingly, the analysis found no definitive association with walking speed, beyond the total number of steps per day,” Paluch says.
The new analysis supports and expands findings from another study led by Paluch before, where the researchers collected data from about 2,100 participants between age 38 and 50.By comparing the resulting data in three groups, the researchers found that from 5,000 to 6,000 steps, there was an increasing risk reduction in all-cause death rates up to about 10,000 steps.Unlike most studies that focus on older adults, this study involved people in middle age.So the findings can begin to suggest ways to keep people healthier and to avoid early death.
“There's a lot of evidence suggesting that moving even a little more is beneficial, particularly for those who are doing very little activity,” Paluch says.“More steps per day are better for your health.”
8.Why did the scientists carry out the analysis
A.To explain the pedometer's working principle.
B.To know about people's different athletic abilities.
C.To determine the best physical activity for people.
D.To provide a scientific guideline on daily walking.
9.What can be learned from the international scientists' findings
A.The old should walk as much as possible.
B.The most beneficial steps vary by age groups.
C.Young people usually walk more than the old.
D.Walking pace is the key to avoiding early death.
10.What's the uniqueness of Paluch's previous study compared with most others
A.Comparing data in several groups.
B.Helping middle-aged people gain health benefits.
C.Containing participants with little activity.
D.Offering advice to people with exercise preferences.
11.Which of the following could be the best title for the text
A.How Many Steps a Day Is Best for Your Health
B.Why Is Walking the Most Popular Exercise
C.Who Can Benefit Most from Walking
D.Why Should We Keep Moving
D
Ocean water, plentiful, but too salty to drink, cover a substantial part of the planet, making it serve as a rich, important, and largely unexplored resource for numerous coastal cities.
In 2013,Hong Kong built a system that used seawater to cool part of the city, which pumps (用泵抽出) cold seawater into a plant equipped with heat exchangers.By absorbing (吸收) heat to cool tubes full of water, the seawater supplies cooled water that subsequently flows into buildings to lower the temperature in their rooms. And the slightly warmed seawater is then pumped back into the ocean.Known as district cooling, this approach tends to use far less energy than typical air conditioners.
A group at Hong Kong University focused on Hong Kong and two other big coastal cities:Jeddah,Saudi Arabia, and Miami,Fla,to see what it might look like if all three adopted citywide saltwater systems.Miami could save 16 percent of the fresh water it uses each year, whereas Hong Kong, with more non-drinking water needs, was saving up to 28 percent.Estimated energy savings ranged from just 3 percent in Jeddah to 11 percent in Miami, which came from the more efficient saltwater air conditioning.
Because the systems use so much less electricity,saltwater-cooling systems are greener. The researchers estimated how emissions of greenhouse gases would drop if each city instead used seawater for cooling.Next, they estimated how much pollution would be incited to build the new system, and compared these results to see how emissions of climate-warming gases would change for each city.
Hong Kong would see the biggest cut in greenhouse gases if the systems were expanded to the whole city, and it's estimated that it could drop by some 250,000 tons of carbon pollution per year, while Miami could see a drop of around 7,700 tons, the study found.
However, the saltwater-cooling system would cause more planet-warming gases in Jeddah due to Jeddah's urban expansion and all the tubes that would be needed to service it.The pollution generated from building such a large system would be higher than what the system would save.Clearly, there is “no one-size-fits-all solution”.
12.How does Hong Kong' s seawater cooling system work
A.By using seawater to power air conditioners.
B.By offering people cooler drinking water.
C.By having pumps blow away warm air.
D.By cycling water at different temperatures.
13.What does the data from three cities show about the seawater cooling system
A.It is equally effective in most coastal cities.
B.It is applied in different ways in three cities.
C.It leads to significant fresh water and energy savings.
D.It contributes most to cities with big need for fresh water.
14.What does the underlined word “incited” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A.Monitored. B.Created.
C.Avoided. D.Limited.
15.What can we infer from the unpleasant result in Jeddah
A.The cooling systems require more advanced technology.
B.City pollution lessens the cooling system's effectiveness.
C.Costal landforms can change the cooling system's operation.
D.Urban construction challenges the cooling system's application.

Perhaps you've got a problem you need to tackle.Or maybe you want to be prepared next time one arises.Either way,it's a good idea to get familiar with the five steps of problem-solving.
Identify the problem. You must define and understand the problem before you start, whether you're solving it independently or as a group. If you don't have a single view of what the problem is,you could be fixing something that doesn't need fixing. 16 And then you'll find out why the problem is occurring and who it is impacting.
Generate potential ideas.Once you have clarity on the problem, you then need to start thinking about every possible solution. This is where you go big and broad,as you want to come up with as many alternative solutions as possible.Don't just take the first idea; build out as many as you can through active listening. 17
Decide on a solution.Whichever solution you pick individually or as a team, think about the impact on others if you implement (实施) it. 18 For instance, who do you need to inform of this change How will they react to this change
19 At this stage,be prepared for feedback (反馈),and plan for this. When you roll out the solution, request feedback on the success of the change made, and have a monitoring plan in place to measure progress.
Review and improve.Making a change shouldn't be a one-time action.Review the results of the change regularly and make adjustments where needed. 20 And at the same time, you also make the solution implemented more effective.
A.Work backward.
B.Implement the solution.
C.Problems come in all shapes and sizes.
D.Usually, there are several things you need to consider.
E.The more you create, the more likely you'll find the best one.
F.In this way,you can make sure it has met the desired outcomes.
G.Spend time analyzing, writing down and discussing the problem in all aspects.

I faced a tight budget when I was nine.On November 1st,I used up much of the money I saved. With a small amount of pocket money left before New Year,I didn't have enough money to buy presents for the family even if I didn't spend a cent on anything else in the following weeks.
I was seriously considering going to my dad and asking for an advance on the next year's pocket money given by him,so I could at least buy gifts for my family members. But then, one evening,I was sitting in my room reading advertisements in the back of a magazine.Several greeting-card companies were telling us how people could make money by selling their cards and stationery (文具).Normally,I would have passed right over the ads,but this time my situation was so difficult that I felt I had nothing to lose.
The ad that attracted me most was one by a well-known greeting-card company in my nation, whose products were of high quality. With my parents' help,I contacted the company, although they preferred adults or older kids to advertise their products. After my sincere request, they agreed to give me,a nine-year-old boy with no previous sales experience,a chance.
My sales materials arrived within the week.I had expected something small and neat, but the package looked like a dinosaur's shoebox; it was close to three feet long and nearly a foot wide, full of stuff. In addition to a thick binder(活页夹)containing a complete selection of the cards and some writing paper I would be selling, which I would be selling for around $3 per box, there were also order forms, return envelopes, and even a pen to fill out orders.
Although my parents supported my try to make money by myself, they had little confidence in my success; after all, instead of an outgoing kid,I was somewhat shy. However,I was determined to have a try to challenge myself.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
Wasting no time,I stuck two order forms and the pen into the binder and set off at nine the next morning,a Saturday. _____________________________________

[参考范文]
Wasting no time,I stuck two order forms and the pen into the binder and set off at nine the next morning,a Saturday.I walked along our street, asking neighbors to buy my products.Initially,I felt a bit embarrassed and ashamed, but gradually I became better since the neighbors were generally friendly. And that morning I sold three boxes of cards.Motivated,I kept myself busy for several weekends to market my products in the neighboring streets to more people. At last,I sold all of them and then received another box of cards and writing paper to sell.
Eventually,I earned over $20 which was not a small amount for a 9yearold kid in 1954.It made me so thrilled.Instead of no presents at all,my family members got the finest presents I had ever given them—a beautiful scarf for my mother,a sweater for my dad, etc. When receiving them, they were amazed and praised me,which made me so proud. After this productmarketing experience,I became more courageous to face challenges independently in my life and study, which would have a positive effect on me in the long run.
