Kateryna Shcherbyna has been worried since the war broke out.As a horse owner and trainer, she saw that her horses were having trouble getting grain and hay (饲草).“The problem that arose with the beginning of the war was the delivery of horses' feed,” Shcherbyna tells Treehugger,a website.“It's hard to have all the year stock of hay at the place; the land is quite expensive around here.”
Typically, stables (马房) keep their feed as distantly as 250 miles from the barn (棚舍).“That's why it was impossible to bring a big truck with the feed to our area during the war.It was dangerous because of the bombs and an enormous number of block posts everywhere,” she says.
Shcherbyna came up with an idea to get a small bus to at least bring small amounts of feed to each stable.A friend brought her a minibus. Then, she drove almost every day to bring hay and grain from the stock not far from her home to the stables she was able to reach.
Besides,Shcherbyna created Help Ukrainian Horses,a chat group where people could ask for or offer assistance. While volunteers were able to help the animals that were still in stables, there were other horses that had to live on their own when their owners ran away for safety.“There were a lot of stables on the line of the fire and the only way to be safe was to release horses and get away as fast as possible. It was not possible to take care of them. There were military actions,” Shcherbyna says.
Shcherbyna, who is hoping to find a horse-related position abroad, says she has stayed safe so far.“Luckily,I didn't get shot during my drives.Although there were some battle planes flying above us,I was lucky enough to live in a village where we did not have any military actions,” she says.

Have you ever received an unwanted gift and still said “Thank you”? This choice to hide a negative emotion is a display rule—one of many that specify socially appropriate responses to emotions in a given situation to create a desirable emotional atmosphere. As more social interaction goes online, emojis are widely used to represent emotional content similar to facial expressions.Scientists are now investigating how emojis are used to reflect our emotions in different contexts. Are there display rules that apply to emojis, and how do those affect people's well-being
“As online socializing becomes more popular, people have become used to embellishing(修饰) their expressions and checking the appropriateness of their communication,” Moyu Liu of the University of Tokyo said. She pointed out that previous research hadn't addressed the relationships between emotions expressed and experienced. This is when display rules can prove problematic:If this disharmony between the emotions that you experience and the emotions that you can express is too great, emotional tiredness can develop.
As many as 1,289 participants in Liu's study typed emojis in response to Internet chats, reported the intensity of their emotional expressions and rated how often they used emojis. They were given messages with varying social contexts and responded to them as they normally would.
Liu found that the results showed that, similar to facial expressions, people chose to express more emotions with emojis in private contexts or with close friends.Intense expressions of emotion came with matching emojis, unless people felt the need to mask their true emotions. For instance, people used smiling emojis to mask negative emotions.Individuals tended to use euphemistic (委婉的) emojis in negative contexts to manage the expressions, and negative emojis were used only when negative feelings were very strongly felt.
“To date, over 90% of Internet users worldwide use emojis, which also make up the main expression tools for daily communication. So it is important to consider whether it is causing us to become further away from our true emotions,” said Liu.“Do people require a ‘shelter’ to express their true emotions, and is it possible to break free from pretending and share our true selves in online settings?”
8.What can display rules help us do in social communication
A.Respond to various emotions appropriately.
B.Show our real communication willingness.
C.Simplify online emotional expressions.
D.Deal with our negative feelings.
9.When can emotional tiredness in communication occur
A.Negative emojis are overused.
B.Emojis don't reflect true feelings.
C.Social contexts are misunderstood.
D.People care about expressions too much.
10.What did the result of Liu's study show about negative emojis
A.They were used in a euphemistic way.
B.They were applied to show disagreement.
C.They were carefully avoided in private contexts.
D.They were paired with extremely negative emotions.
11.What does the text mainly talk about
A.The role of negative emojis in online chats.
B.Social media's effects on communication styles.
C.The impact of emojis on emotional expression.
D.Display rules' importance in personal relationships.

There is a stage of sleep where we still have a toe in the waking world, and yet at the same time, the mind is relaxed and our thoughts flow more freely.Sadly, the sleeping stage 1 (N1 for short) lasts ten minutes briefly as we drift off to deep sleep, and all of the imaginative thoughts and vivid dreams that we encounter during the brief moment are often forgotten by morning.
That's a pity, considering that a study published in 2021 found that participants who spent at least 15 seconds in N1 and then awakened during it or shortly thereafter enjoyed a burst of creative problem-solving power. This power made them more capable of figuring out difficult math problems.
Researchers Adam Haar Horowitz and Kathleen Esfahany invited 50 healthy participants into the lab. They had all participants wear a futuristic glove-like device, called Dormio, which takes physiological (生理的) measurements to determine when wearers enter sleep stage N1 and then the next stage,N2.The glove also has an audio (音频) system and a recording function.
In the lab, some of the participants were instructed to fall asleep and others to stay awake. For the sleepers,Dormio would wake them up after being in N1 for no more than five minutes, and then instruct them to briefly detail their dream experience and go back to sleep. The process would then repeat. For non-sleepers,Dormio would simply ask them to record their thoughts every 8 to 12 minutes. The researchers also included another key component:Dormio would “incubate (培养)” some of the sleepers' dreams by asking them to think of a tree as they drifted off to sleep.
Reviewing the results, the researchers found that the participants who took N1 naps greatly outperformed the non-sleeping participants in the tests of creativity. The participants who had their dreams incubated by Dormio led the way, however, scoring 43% higher in creativity than the participants who just napped, and 78% higher than the participants who stayed awake.
According to the researchers, the results clearly show that dreams aren't futile, but rather can be sources of inspiration, especially if used in a controlled manner.
12.What would happen to people during N1
A.Lose all their feelings about the outside world.
B.Forget unimportant details during the day.
C.Have an active and imaginative mind.
D.Find it difficult to be woken up.
13.Which of the following is the function of Dormio in the experiment
A.Prevent some participants from falling asleep in the process.
B.Improve participants' sleep quality by making them dream less.
C.Collect participants' physical data and check their health conditions.
D.Monitor participants' sleep state and guide their behavior for research.
14.What can be inferred from the research findings
A.Dreamers can be more creative than non-dreamers.
B.Dreaming is a normal and usually pleasant experience.
C.Dreams are a reflection of people's recent situation.
D.The ideal nap length should be 12 minutes.
15.What does the underlined word “futile” in the last paragraph probably mean
A.Reliable. B.Worthless.
C.Practical. D.Fruitful.

Wild camping is simply camping outside of a developed or regular campsite.Camping at a music festival,in your backyard,or at a developed camp-ground (营地) is just regular old camping. 16 You don't have to pay a fee or reserve a spot in advance.
17 For example, when you set up a tent at a developed camp-ground,you will usually stay in the same place for a few days.On the other hand, wild camping allows one to spend most of the day exploring the wilderness before they put up their wild camping tent for the night and move on in the morning.
There are many mental and physical benefits of spending time in nature.Modern-day life can be stressful,so many people head out into the wild for relief. 18 Also, you can enjoy a sense of primitiveness that regular camping can't give you. It's a cheerful way to tackle multi-day hikes in remote areas, allowing one to spend nights under the stars in breathtaking locations.
Wild camping generally requires checking if you can legally camp at a particular place and in some cases, getting permission to do so.Leaving no trace is essential.Take what you bring with you when you depart. 19
Most safety problems about wild camping arise from not dressing up and preparing properly for camping in the wild. 20 Additionally, ensure someone knows where you are wild camping and when you will return.
A.Although simple, this is the hardest thing to do.
B.There are some things to pack when you are camping in the wild.
C.Take some warm clothes and check the weather forecast before going.
D.Wild camping,on the other hand,is camping near enough anywhere else.
E.This means leaving no unwanted equipment, rubbish or anything else behind.
F.Wild camping allows you to take in the great outdoors, free from the pressure.
G.The difference between wild and plain old camping also lies in how you approach it.

When I was eighteen,I did my first part-time job in a little corner shop. The owner was a sweet old man who always believed the best in people. He had given us specific instructions that whenever the homeless man,who often hung around nearby, entered the shop,we were to offer him two sandwiches and a drink, regardless of how much money he had.Additionally,if it was hot,we were to provide him with two large bottles of water. The homeless man was always quiet and seemed appreciative of our assistance.
One evening, the sky darkened as thick clouds appeared overhead, casting a frightening shadow over the landscape. There seemed to be a huge storm while my coworker called in sick, leaving me to manage the shop alone for about four hours until closing time.Just as I was about to finish my shift, the homeless man walked in with his usual gentle smile.I was relieved because I knew we had his favorite sandwiches available.I handed them to him along with his drink, and to my surprise,he handed me a $10 bill, which was much more than the small change he usually had.
I said,“Oh,it looks like you get some money today.Would you like a hot pie to go with your dinner We still have a couple left!” But he declined, saying,“No,please keep the rest of the money for the owner to make up for the days when I didn't have any money and he still fed me.” I agreed and wished him a pleasant meal.Seeing outside I noticed that it began to rain with fierce wind; the storm was on its way as expected. So I decided to close the store as quickly as possible. When retracting (收回) the advertising sign from the shop front,I was struck by our store sign, unconscious (不省人事的).
The next thing I remember is waking up in a hospital bed with a doctor standing beside me,asking,“Hey there, you're awake! Do you know what happened Can you tell me what day it is?” I struggled to find my voice and muster (聚集) the strength to answer his questions.

第二节
[参考范文]
I told him that all I could recall was the strong wind and being hit. However, the doctor revealed that my homeless friend who didn't go far rushed to pull me to safety when he heard the crash.Later, the shop owner visited me in the hospital and shared a security video on his phone which showed our hero was sitting on a large stone and enjoying his dinner around the corner.Seeing I was in danger,he ran to my aid without hesitation, but unfortunately,I had already been unconscious by the time he reached me.
Our homeless friend's selfless act of bravery did not go unnoticed. He was praised in the local newspaper, and with job offers pouring in,he was able to move into a little house of his own and enjoy a steady income.Ten years have passed since that fateful day,and although the corner store has long closed its door,I still see my hero at our local grocery store with his partner and two young children. When I tried to thank him for saving me,he simply waved me off.
