When I lived in Prague in the Czech Republic,I often took weekend trips to explore the countryside of neighboring cities. One particular weekend,I took a three-hour bus ride to visit a nearby city. Before I got off the bus,I checked the schedule for the time to return to Prague; I was only planning a day trip and did not intend to stay overnight.
After a delightful day of sightseeing,I made my way to the bus station to catch the 6:15 bus back to Prague. However, upon reaching the station,I discovered there was no queue for the bus.Despite the language barrier,I managed to gather from gestures and expressions that the last bus of the day had already departed at 5:15.This posed a serious problem for me.
About a month earlier,I had fallen victim to a pickpocketing(扒窃) incident, losing around $100.To prevent a similar occurrence,I only carried enough cash to cover my daily expenses. With only 9 crowns left in my pocket,I thought if no hotel charged less than 9 crowns, spending the night on a park bench would be my only choice—an uncomfortable idea for a man in his late 60s.
After careful consideration,I went into a hotel to try my luck.Naturally,I assumed it would cost more than 9 crowns.I approached the manager, shared my story with her,and made a request.I proposed that if I could spend the night there,I would give her 9 crowns as payment and mail the remaining amount to her the next day.To my great surprise, the manager said I was welcome to stay, and that she would accept what I had in my pocket as the full payment for a room.Additionally, she offered me a nice meal for free.
Eventually,I spent the night in a clean and tastefully decorated room, not on a cold, hard park bench.Upon my return to Prague,I wrote the manager a note of thanks for her kindness. She reminded me that kindness is an international characteristic, and has no boundaries.

Ants are famed for their highly developed work ethic. Now a study shows ants' navigational skills (导航技能) are more complicated than previously thought.Scientists have revealed how the insects, which walk backwards when carrying heavy loads of food, use the sun's position and visual memories of their surroundings to guide them home.
Ants were known to use both processes, but these were assumed to be two separate responses that required ants to be facing in their direction of travel. However, scientists have recently shown that ants walking backwards will occasionally look behind them to check their surroundings, and use the information to set a course relative to the sun's position. In this way,the insects can maintain their course towards the nest (巢穴) regardless of which way they are facing.
The scientists from the University of Edinburgh studied a group of desert ants in Seville. The team set up barriers on the ground to create a one-way route to the nest, gave ants either a small or large piece of cookie, and observed how they made their way home. They found although the ants usually walk forward when carrying small pieces of food, they often walk backwards to pull larger items to their nest.
The researchers also observed that ants set off in the wrong direction when a mirror was used to change their judgment of the sun's location. To ensure they stay on course,backward-walking ants also routinely drop what they are carrying and turn around. They do this to compare what they see with their visual memories of the route, and correct their direction of travel if they have wandered off course.
Professor Barbara Webb, the University of Edinburgh's School of Informatics, said,“Ants have a relatively tiny brain, less than the size of a pinhead (针尖).Yet they can navigate successfully under many difficult conditions, including going backward.Understanding these behaviors gives us new knowledge about brain functions of ants, and inspires us to build robot systems that copy them.”
8.Where does the difference lie between past and recent discoveries about ants' navigational skills
A.Their memory for the nest.
B.Their facing directions of travel.
C.Their responses to surroundings.
D.Their methods of maintaining the course.
9.What can we infer from the study of ants in Seville
A.Small pieces of food are preferred by ants.
B.Ants' facing directions depend on the food size.
C.Ants habitually choose familiar routes to the nest.
D.Barriers on the way disturb ants' judgment on the direction.
10.What will ants do if they are misled about the sun's position
A.Send signals to get their partners' help.
B.Just wander off the route to find a new nest.
C.Look for another route based on their feeling.
D.Double-check and adjust their course accordingly.
11.What does the text mainly talk about
A.Ants' great ability to carry heavy loads.
B.The reactions of ants in extreme conditions.
C.Ants' environment-based navigational ability.
D.The similarity between ants' and humans' brains.

If you've ever burned your hands on a hot seat belt buckle, you know how hot the inside of a car can get on a summer day.But a new fabric (a piece of cloth) could one day help cars and other objects stay cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter.
The fabric acts as a “thermal cloak” (保温斗篷),which helps limit temperature changes in the space below it.And it requires no power source to do this, meaning the cloak can cut the energy used for heating and cooling.Globally, heating and cooling make up nearly four-tenths of energy use in buildings.Materials like this thermal cloak could cut the numbers while also keeping us more comfortable during heatwaves.
Kehang Cui is an engineer at Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China. For the new study, his team built a two-layered cloak.Coated with boron nitride, the white silica fibers (硅石纤维) in the outer layer could reflect ultraviolet (UV) light and help get rid of heat.Together, they reflected 96 percent of the sunlight that had hit the fabric and would have contributed to warming. At the same time, the outer layer took in heat from the surrounding area and then sent out that energy as infrared light (红外光).As heat left the site as radiation, the area under the cloak cooled even more.
That outer layer keeps the space under the cloak cooler for longer than if it were uncovered.Still, the cloaked space slowly warms up during the day.The inner layer—made of aluminum foil—keeps this space warm at night by trapping some of that heat inside.
The Shanghai team tested the cloak's durability (耐用性) in several extreme environments. For instance, they baked the fabric at 800℃.That's almost hot enough to melt table salt. The team says this extreme durability suggests the cloak might be pragmatic in spacecraft or similar environments.“Our next step is to demonstrate it in even larger-scale field tests—such as rooftops. That should help us see its impact on our daily lives,” says the team.
12.What is the main feature of the new fabric
A.It senses in-car temperature change.
B.It collects sunlight to generate power.
C.It saves energy while ensuring comfort.
D.It improves the cooling systems in buildings.
13.What is the function of white silica fibers in Cui's cloak
A.Making the cloak more durable.
B.Keeping the heat inside the cloak.
C.Collecting light and providing energy.
D.Reflecting light and transforming energy.
14.What does the underlined word “pragmatic” possibly mean in the last paragraph
A.Rare. B.Applicable.
C.Influential. D.Unreasonable.
15.What can be the best title for the text
A.Game-changing Cloth Detects Climate Change
B.Engineers Explore Fabric's Role in Cooling Buildings
C.Engineers Develop Advanced Fabric for Sustainable Comfort
D.A New Fabric Shows Promise for Global Temperature Control

I was a teenager on the Caribbean island of Saint Vincent when a volcano called La Soufriere erupted unexpectedly on 13 April 1979. 16 , but the ash was huge and falling on people like rain.My father and I drove towards it to evacuate (撤离)my grandmother; there were evacuees along the way with donkeys carrying their luggage.
That dramatic event made a lasting impression.I went on to study geology, and led the University of the West Indies Seismic Research Centre at Saint Augustine,Trinidad, where I still work.My team tracks 17 volcanoes across the Lesser Antilles islands in the Caribbean, using GPS to monitor earthquake-related activity and ground deformation. 17 .
In December 2020,a lava dome (熔岩穹丘) formed on La Soufriere and grew quickly. For some reasons,we couldn't hold community meetings. 18 .We made sure to provide them with detailed instructions on safety measures, which helped them feel more ready in the face of danger.
19 .It did a lot more damage than in 1979,but less than it caused in its last really big eruption,in 1902.People were scared; the ash darkened the sky.But thanks to an evacuation order issued 24 hours earlier,16,000 people were moved to safety.
These days,we go to St Vincent every two or three months to check a rain gauge(计量器)that we set up after the 2021 eruption. 20 ,which gives us better understanding and prevention of volcano-related disasters in the future.
A.The lava dome grew as fast as we expected
B.In April 2021,the volcano erupted violently
C.So we drove around with a loudspeaker to warn people at risk
D.The volcano was 30 kilometers away on the other side of the island
E.La Soufriere remains the most active on the Lesser Antilles islands
F.We're studying how much rain it takes to cause the mudflow of loose ash
G.We also educate people about the threat and what to do in case of an eruption

I once lived in Palermo,Sicily with my family for years. One thing clear in my mind was that there were always some people in need on the streets.I wanted to help them.Mum told me we couldn't possibly help all of them, but she would think of something.
One night in December,Mum told my sisters and me that we could each pick one person to help with the approach of New Year. When we made our choices, she would decide whether to give money or clothing. The next day,I visited all the people I knew who would need some help, and Giuseppe was the last person I visited, who worked in the incinerator (垃圾焚化炉) room of our apartment building. That was where all of the garbage ended up,and Giuseppe was responsible for burning it all.
When I reached that room,a man wearing dirty clothes said,“No one ever comes here. Are you lost?” “I guess so,” I smiled and covered my nose.He laughed,“I'm used to the smell here.” Looking around the room,I noticed flames (火焰) dancing inside the incinerator, where there was lots of garbage. The smell was so strong that it brought tears to my eyes. What's worse, there were no windows in the room.
I asked Giuseppe if his wife and kids asked him to shower the moment he got home.He looked down at the floor and said,“No family.” “I'm sorry. But you work down here by yourself all day,and then go home at night and are by yourself there?”I asked.Giuseppe nodded.
“Don't you get lonely?” I continued.
“I do,” he replied sadly, with his shoulder slumped (耷拉着).
I thought about that and asked,“Would you mind if I come to visit you sometime when you're here at work?” Giuseppe's eyes sparkled with excitement and said,“You would do that You would come here to visit me That's so nice.”
After that day,I visited Giuseppe at least once a week.He always seemed happy to have a little company.
As New Year was approaching, one day,I asked Giuseppe if he was ready for New Year.He told me he didn't prepare anything, because,to him,New Year was just another day.Feeling great pity,I went home.

That night after dinner,Mum asked my sisters and me whom we were going to help. When my sisters told the persons they chose,Mum decided to give food and clothing respectively. Then it was my turn.I told Mum it was a difficult decision, but I really wanted to help Giuseppe—he needed a family.Pacing back and forth,Mum finally said,“I know what we can do.We can be Giuseppe's family for a day. We'll invite him to our New Year dinner, and if he is willing,we can be his holiday family every year.”
The next day,I told Giuseppe the idea and he agreed to join our New Year dinner. On that New Year's Day,when Mum opened the door, she was amazed to see Giuseppe was neat and handsome. He thanked her and my dad profusely for inviting him to dinner. While sharing the traditional food,we cheerfully chatted and laughed together.Over those years,we had helped many fascinating people, but Giuseppe was the only one that often enjoyed New Year dinner with us.He regarded us as his family members and we were happy to bring warmth and light into his lonely life.
