In life,we often face challenges that seem impossible to overcome. It's during these tough times that tales of extraordinary bravery and perseverance surface.Cara Brookins' story of changing her family's lives is an example of this.
Cara Brookins,a mother of four, found herself emotionally tired after ending her unlucky marriage. With limited money, finding a suitable home for her four children seemed impossible. However,Cara refused to give up on the idea of reuniting her family under one roof. She made a plan to build their own home from scratch (从零开始),even though the idea seemed unconventional and a little crazy.
Cara purchased a one-acre plot of land and secured a construction loan of approximately $150,000.But completing their home was far from easy.Without previous experience of building homes,Cara learned everything, from laying the foundations (地基) to running gas lines and setting up plumbing, through online courses. However, the courses on the Internet were often confusing, and there were countless ways to approach a single task.Recognizing that,Cara decided to hire a part-time firefighter with building experience.
The Brookins family persevered and dealt with every challenge together.Fifteen-year-old Drew assisted his mother in designing plans, while eleven-year-old Jada transported water from a neighbor's pond. And,Jada played a crucial role in mixing it with concrete (混凝土).Balancing work and study,Cara committed herself to the project, often working late into the night.Despite the challenges, they pushed through, and nine months later, the Brookins family moved into their new five-bedroom home, which they named the Inkwell Manor.
For Cara Brookins, building their own shelter was not something to be proud of.However,it turned out to be the most encouraging thing she could have done for herself and her children.Through this experience, she has discovered that there is enormous power in setting a goal and persevering. She believes that anyone can achieve greatness if they decide on a single aim and take small steps towards it.

Most people would not connect the country of Sweden with the tradition of fine winemaking. However, climate change is lengthening the growing seasons in Sweden and necessitating the creation of new grape varieties specifically adapted to the country's environment. As a result, more people engage in the winemaking industry.
Felix Ahrberg is an expert winemaker at the 14-hectare Kullabergs ving rd near the North Sea.He noted that the rising temperatures are hurting vineyards(葡萄园) in traditional winemaking countries. At the same time, with the production of 30,000 bottles of wine annually,Kullabergs has received recognition in various competitions for some of their wines, leading to their inclusion in the wine lists of fancy restaurants across Europe.Even some experts from France are settling in Sweden to grow grapes and careers.
Emma Berto is one such winemaker from France who now works at Thora ving rd.Sweden's climate is more predictable than France's.There, the early spring weather can be too warm and the grapes begin to develop before they should.Besides,Berto said she wanted to use more sustainable grape-growing methods, including limits on insect poisoning.According to Berto, the best part is that,in Sweden, winemaking is a newer business,so there is more freedom; by contrast,France has been making wine for so long, and there are many rules winemakers must follow.
The main grape grown in Sweden is Solaris. The winemakers treat the vines differently. In Sweden, the leaves are removed from the vines so that the grapes can receive more sunlight. In France and Spain, sometimes winemakers are worried the grapes will get too much sunlight. Some vineyard owners depend on wine experts from traditional winemaking countries because Swedish universities do not have study programs in the science and practice of winemaking.
Maarten van Aalst,a climate professor, said businesses are often the first to identify and react to climate change and that it is a good thing that “climate change is partly something we can adapt to”.But,he warned,it is not all good weather in Sweden. He pointed to the recent heavy rains that caused flooding. He said bad weather is becoming more common because of human-caused climate change.
8.What do the facts mentioned in paragraph 2 show
A.Winemaking in Sweden is thriving.
B.Climate change is hurting the global wine industry.
C.The Swedish are taking up winemaking as a career.
D.Traditional winemaking countries are struggling for survival.
9.What is the key benefit of winemaking in Sweden in Berto's opinion
A.Its high grape production.
B.Its less changeable climate.
C.Its more flexible policies.
D.Its insect-resistant grape varieties.
10.What does Maarten want to say about climate change
A.Coexistence with nature is a win-win.
B.Opportunity comes with challenges.
C.Changes should be accepted with open arms.
D.The economy grows at huge environmental costs.
11.What can be the suitable title for the text
A.Swedish Winemaking Paves the Way for Sustainable Planting
B.The Swedish Welcome Change in the Winemaking Industry
C.Climate Change Fuels the Swedish Winemaking Industry
D.Swedish Winemakers Live in Peace with Climate Change

Four-legged robots like Boston Dynamics' Spot and Cheetah owe almost all their quickness to fancy footwork. While they may visually move much like real animals, the physical inspirations largely stop at their legs.In biology, however,a four-legged animal's movement, flexibility, and complex motor functions come almost entirely from its spine (脊柱).If artificial spines could be put into such designs, engineers could find entirely new approaches to accurate mobility.
Now,engineers are reportedly a few steps further towards spine-centric,four-legged bots thanks to a research team's rat-inspired robot.NeRmo is a biomimetic and four-legged robot that banks on an innovative motor-tendon (运动肌腱的) structure to move around environments.
As far as looks go,NeRmo mirrors a mouse's bone system. The robot's solid front half houses its electronics systems, while its latter half functions much as an actual flexible spine would.Artificial tendons passing through the spine as well as the robot's arm and knee joints (关节) allow NeRmo even more mouse-like movements alongside quicker turning times.NeRmo's tendon system precludes the need for any muscle while still allowing for smooth bending capabilities,i.e.side-to-side,and up-and-down.
To test their new design, the team ran NeRmo through a series of four experiments to demonstrate balancing,straight-line walking, quick turning, and maze navigation (迷宫导航).Each trial included two rounds—one with the spinal system engaged, and the other with it disabled.Across the board,NeRmo performed the tasks better, faster, and more accurately when it combined the spine with its movements.Maze navigation, however, was NeRmo's true shining moment. With its spine engaged, the mouse-bot completed its maze runs much faster than simply wandering through without spinal support.
Although still in its early stages, researchers believe further design involving the spinal systems in future four-legged robots could vastly improve their functionality. If NeRmo wasn't proof enough, think of it this way—MIT's Cheetah can run 13 feet per second with just one joint copying the bending of the spine forward and backward.NeRmo,meanwhile, has eight joints.
12.What is the limitation of Boston Dynamics' Spot and Cheetah
A.Having an unattractive appearance.
B.Referring to few biological bases.
C.Having a strict range of applications.
D.Lacking spine-based moving accuracy.
13.What does the underlined word “precludes” mean in paragraph 3
A.Prevents. B.Combines.
C.Expands. D.Stresses.
14.What did the four testing experiments find
A.NeRmo has a great sense of direction.
B.Spinal systems bettered NeRmo's movement.
C.NeRmo without artificial spines lost control easily.
D.Artificial spines give hope to disabled animals.
15.What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A.Putting NeRmo into use has difficulties in practice.
B.Applying spinal systems to robots has a promising outlook.
C.Reducing the number of joints in robots is necessary.
D.Creating more four-legged robots is a matter of time.

A gift with purchase is a marketing strategy where customers receive an additional item at no extra cost when they buy a specified product or spend a specified amount. 16 Have you ever experienced the joy of such an unexpected gift
A gift with purchase is quite familiar to people who routinely shop for cosmetics(化妆品); most major cosmetics lines in department stores have annual gift with purchase deals. 17 For instance, you might spend 20-50 dollars on a product to receive a cosmetic bag.
This promotional method also occurs in many infomercials (电视购物节目).In addition to purchasing whatever the infomercial is selling, you may be given the opportunity to receive several free “gifts”.These are,in fact, not entirely free. You usually have to pay for shipping and handling for any extra “gifts” you receive.Sometimes the handling payment of these gifts can be very high. 18
Some companies, like Sephora, always offer free samples with Internet purchase.Sample sizes are very small, but you usually have about 10-20 choices of samples and get to select three. 19 However, you can't always depend upon the company offering a sample of the product in which you're most interested.
20 Some auto dealers offer gifts to people who test-drive their cars or you may be offered free trips to places. In most cases, you won't just walk out with your gift that easily. You'll have to listen to sales words; in the case of time-shares this can take several hours or a whole day.
A.Some gifts with purchase simply depend upon your time.
B.Otherwise, they risk offering a gift shoppers don't care about.
C.So it is hard to turn down the chance to get something for free.
D.It can be a nice way to try out products you might be interested in.
E.You usually have to spend a set amount in order to get your gift.
F.So you may want to weigh whether the gift is worth the payment.
G.This strategy enhances the value of the product and advertises new products.

When I was little, like many others,my family was so poor. All my clothes were hand-me-downs and my shoes were worn out.The shoes were only cast aside when they were too broken.I had a sister then. She and her family had moved west and settled down in Colorado. When she could, she helped out by sending us their old clothes.
One day, shortly before New Year,a package arrived from my sister. All of us eagerly gathered around as my mother opened it.Among the items inside, there was a pair of shoes that caught our attention. They were brown with pointy toes, unlike anything we had seen before.I wondered why my sister had chosen to send such unusual shoes.
My mother handed me the shoes, apologizing for the lack of options and explaining that I would have to make do with them as winter approached. The shoes were different from what I was used to,and I felt a mix of embarrassment and disappointment, unsure of how I would be seen by others.
The next day,I wore the shoes and went to school, anxious. When I reached the schoolyard,Timmy,a classmate, yelled,“Evan's wearing girls' shoes!” Instantly, the other kids turned their attention to me,and I hurried to the classroom, hoping to escape their judgment and trying to hide my feet.
By mid-morning,we were talking about the West.At about this time, our principal,Mr Weber came into our classroom and joined the discussion. He excitedly talked about cowboys' lives,“I remember the cowboys and their unique style. One thing that always stood out was their oxford shoes (牛津鞋).” Then he paused with his gaze fixed on my shoes.

A Moment in Nature
Once,as I sat beneath the shelter of a tree, the world around me burst into a glorious display.Birds sang melodiously, butterflies danced in flowers, and a gentle breeze whispered through the trees. It was a symphony of sights and sounds, which left me amazed.
At that moment,I realized the profound wisdom that nature holds.Simply spending a moment appreciating nature's wonders can be a soulcleaning experience.Nature offers us so many things from which we can find harmony within ourselves and with the world around us.
第二节
[参考范文]
Suddenly he stopped near my desk and went silent.Just when my face reddened,he said,“Oxfords! Where did you get them?”“They are a gift from my sister in Colorado. They are old and no one wants them.Everyone laughed at my shoes,” I whispered. Then in a gentle voice,Mr Weber said,“Those are pretty cool,Evan.Every gift carries the giver's kindness within.Perhaps you do not like them, but you should at least appreciate the giver's intention.Besides, many people love this kind of shoes.I like your shoes.”
Hearing Mr Weber's words,I looked down at my shoes, recalling my sister's help for our family.I felt so sorry for my complaint about her “unusual” gift.Mr Weber was right.A pair of shoes couldn't define me.Through his wisdom,Mr Weber turned my embarrassment into pride. As the class continued,Mr Weber encouraged us to appreciate the uniqueness of each other. And Timmy walked slowly up to me and apologized.Back home,I told my family what had happened.I felt so grateful to my sister, who brought me a wonderful surprise.
