4 Modern Robots That Will Shape Our Future
There was once a time when robots were limited to science-fiction movies and novels. Now we have a wide variety of robots available for use or service. Here are 4 examples.
Valkyrie
NASA's “superhero” robot is 6 feet 2 inches in height and was originally designed for use on the International Space Station.Valkyrie is able to walk by itself, pick up objects and use tools.NASA hopes that one day,it can help humans in danger zones and disaster-stricken areas. The robot is basically a she-bot since it was built with female characteristics.
Schaft
This robot, made by a Japanese company (which was later bought by Google),won the recent DARPA robotics competition. The 4 feet 11 inches in height robot can power itself instead of a battery. This gives it greater movement since batteries limit how fast the robot can actually perform tasks.Schaft blew the competition away.
Ian the Invincible
Ian,based on the Atlas robot,is created by Google-owned,Boston Dynamics. The 6 feet 2 inches in height robot has 28 hydraulically actuated joints and stereo vision. What makes Ian unique is the software which allows him to drive a car.Ian came second at the Robo-Olympics,but the 330-pound giant still has quite a way to go.
Telebot
Still under development at Florida International University,Telebot will give injured and disabled police officers an opportunity to go back to work. The robot is 180 cm in height, travels on wheels and is remote controlled.Three HD cameras give Telebot a 360 degree view, and with multiple sensors it helps cops to monitor any dangerous situation from a safe distance.

It is often said that high school years are one of the most important stages that an individual will experience, and high school years are often seen as a critical and life-shaping time.During this period, people often begin to discover what is meaningful to them and how they plan to continue living their life.Volunteering at St.Clare's Hospital has helped me form this positive experience during my high school years.
When I first began volunteering,I was very nervous about meeting new people and being pushed outside of my comfort zone.At the beginning of my volunteering experience I was rather timid and not very outgoing.Fortunately,as time went by,I discovered how to introduce myself to new volunteers,to go out of my way to make patients feel welcome, and to extend the hand of friendship to others.I have learned to respect diversity, which turns out to be particularly helpful in the real world.
My volunteering experience at the hospital has led me to believe that my love and sympathy for the sick can brighten up the day of those lonely patients. There is another valuable lesson I have learned from the volunteer program:The significance of “service” involves making a difference in the lives of others and contributing to the community. Now I feel content each time I finish my shift. This positive feeling has motivated me to continue carrying on this worthwhile cause, and has become something that I view as having irreplaceable importance to my life.
It's a great pity that many teenagers in my generation have not had experiences similar to my own and therefore missed out on some of the important lessons that can be learned in life.Knowing that I made a positive impact on someone is an emotionally uplifting experience that can never be matched by money or fame. And,to the best of my ability,I will follow this path of service throughout my life.

You are just waking up in the spring of 2030.Your Internet of Things bedroom opens solar-powered e-windows and plays gentle music while your smart lighting displays a montage(剪辑组合作品) of beachfront sunrise from your recent vacation.
Your shower uses very little water or soap.It recycles your grey water and puts the extra heat back into your home's operating system. While you dress, your artificial intelligence(AI) assistant shares your schedule for the day and plays your favorite tunes.
You still start your day with a coffee but it comes from your refrigerator which is capable of providing a coffee house experience in your home.A hot breakfast tailored to your specific nutritional needs based on chemical analysis from your trips to the “smart toilet” is waiting for you in the kitchen.
When it's time to leave,an on-demand transport system has three cars waiting for you, your wife (or husband) and your kids.On the road, driverless cars and trucks move with mathematical accuracy, without traffic jams, routine maintenance or road rage.Accident rates are near zero.
On the way,you call your R&D team, who are enveloping a day's work in Shanghai.Your life-sized image is projected(投射) into the China Innovation Centre and your colleagues see you as if you were sitting in the room. It's a bit surreal for them to see you in the morning light given that it's dark on the Bund,Shanghai's waterfront, though the novelty disappears after a few uses.
You review the day's cloud-based data from your Shenzhen manufacturing centre, your pilot project in San Diego and your QA team in Melbourne. The large amounts of data sets were collected in real-time from every piece of equipment and have been beautifully summarised by your company's AI.All these facilities are closely maintained and operated through an advanced predictive analytics platform.

If you are into Greek mythology, you probably have heard the story of Oedipus. This tale, which became one of the best examples of self-fulfilling prophecy, shows how Oedipus and his father Laius, unconsciously (or maybe consciously?) demonstrated their fate.Like the Oedipus tale,we may have self-prophesied our destiny in several aspects of our lives, whether positive or negative. For instance, have you ever foreseen something that eventually happened to you You're not alone.
A self-fulfilling prophecy is when a person's belief generates a conscious or unconscious behavior that makes their thoughts come true.It works like a cycle. You hold a belief about other people and yourself which affects your actions concerning them or yourself. For others, the assumptions affect how you act toward them, thus influencing their views about you.
For a long time,self-fulfilling prophecies have grabbed the attention of sociology and psychology researchers, who want to understand how they impact human behavior.Robert Rosenthal and Lenore Jacobson demonstrated a unique type of self-fulfilling prophecy with their experiment with children in the classroom:the Pygmalion effect. The researchers told teachers that some of their students were part of the “growth spurts(快速成长)” group based on their IQ tests.Later, they retested the students and collected data from both “ordinary” and “growth-spurts” students, discovering that the “growth-spurts” showed a much better performance than the “ordinary” ones. The Pygmalion effect shows that when you create expectations about people, you will likely treat them based on those expectations. This may influence the person's behavior, who acts according to that expectation, becoming a classic example of a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Self-fulfilling prophecies are so deep-rooted in our psychology and social environment that we often don't even notice that they can influence our activities regularly, whether at home, school,or work. When using self-fulfilling prophecies to achieve goals,it's essential to have a positive outlook and to focus on the actions you can take to bring about the desired outcome.Believing that you can succeed is an essential part of making it happen.
12.How does the author introduce the topic
A.By questioning a theory.
B.By making a comparison.
C.By giving an example.
D.By citing others' ideas.
13.Which of the following is an example of a self-fulfilling prophecy
A.Those who are diligent are more likely to succeed.
B.One insecure about his ability to pass the exam fails at last.
C.The lower one's expectations are,the less disappointed he will be.
D.A gymnast puts her most impressive skill at the end of the routine.
14.What does the experiment in paragraph 3 focus on
A.The wide gap between students.
B.How IQ tests function in one's actions.
C.The difference of people's expectations.
D.How others' expectations affect one's behavior.

With the rapid development of science and technology,we don't know how different our life will be in the future. 16
At first we think about human relationships. In the year 2050,we will use computers almost every day.We will be making new friends through the Internet—even our husbands or wives will be met in this way. 17 On the other hand, our relationships with people won't be as important as they are today—we will feel a little lonely.
Computers will also help us in many other activities in 2050.For example, they will be used by the children at school to make their learning easier. In addition, there will be much more other machines which will play a similar role as computers, like robots which will do the housework for us.
18 Traveling to other planets or to the moon will also be available for everyone.Means of transport will,of course, change, too. We will be using solar-powered cars which will be much more environmentally friendly.
We could expect that the faster technological progress would lead to a more polluted environment. But it isn't true. 19 And scientists will probably find cures for many dangerous diseases, like cancer or AIDS.Therefore, our surroundings as well as health will be in a better condition.
Although we can't predict the exact changes which will be made in the world,we often think about them.We worry about our and our children's future;we have expectations, hopes as well as fears. But I think we should be rather confident about our future. 20
A.We can only imagine it.
B.It will be much faster and easier for us.
C.Our environment will be more polluted.
D.However,we are convinced of the following.
E.Spending holidays will also be completely different.
F.We should be happy and believe good things will happen.
G.We will pay more attention to protecting the environment.

Throughout life,we come across many people who impact us in a way.Their impact can be for a day or for a lifetime. It's common not to recognize the impact someone has left on you until a certain moment. The person who left a great impact on me is my dad.
Three months after turning fourteen,my life was great.I was getting settled into a high school;my grades were already starting off greatly and I was making friends.
One day as I came home from school,I walked into the living room, finding my mom and dad talking. My parents turned to me and told me to sit down because there was something important they had to tell me.I soon found out that my dad's liver was failing and he needed an immediate transplant.I was shocked and confused because my dad seemed fine.He was working and never looked sick.My parents told me not to worry because everything would be fine.Four months had passed and my dad still had not received a new liver;he was progressively getting worse. His body seemed to be getting weaker, but he constantly said he was fine.
It was getting hard for my family and me.My dad had to quit his job leaving my mom to be the only provider.I had to take on the responsibility of cleaning the house, cooking meals and checking on my dad while my mom was at work.I had to cut back on hanging around with my friends because my dad was beginning to go in and out of the hospital. My focus for school was starting to slip.So were my grades. Two nights before my school spring break,my mom received a call from the hospital that my dad had been in a car accident and that he was in hospital.Surprisingly,my dad hadn't received a scratch on him. Then the next night my mom received a call from the doctor stating that there was a liver that matched my dad's body and that he needed to get to the hospital immediately.

第二节
[参考范文]
My parents and I rushed to the hospital. After various examinations,my father was rushed into the operating room, leaving my mother and me a big smile from which we read the word FINE.Three hours' waiting seemed like a lifetime during which my mother kept comforting me by saying “Your dad said everything will be just fine!” The time when the door opened and out came a smiling doctor who informed us the good news,my mother burst into tears.Three weeks later my father was able to be out of the hospital but he still needed special care at home which was a responsibility of me because my mother had to work all day outside.
I had to take on so many responsibilities at home. Housework and the care for my father took up most of the day, leaving little time for my study. But everyday my father told me the same thing “Honey, everything will be just fine!” Six months later,my father was fully recovered and four years later I graduated as a top student.Time took away so many happy moments of my family but left us something most important “Honey, everything will be just fine!”
