Unit C Grammaring教学设计
I. Teaching Objectives
Master the usage of the pronoun “it” to refer to time, a thing, an action, a situation, distance, weather, or when the real subject is at the end of the sentence.
Improve the ability to use “it” correctly in rewriting sentences and completing passages about New Year's resolutions, enhancing grammatical accuracy.
Be able to create sentences using “it” based on chosen New Year's resolutions, applying the grammar in practical contexts.
II. Language Knowledge
1. Key structures
Use of “it”:
To refer to time, a thing, an action, or a situation that has been mentioned.
To refer to time, distance, or weather.
In the position of the subject when the real subject is at the end of the sentence (e.g., It is + adjective + to do sth.).
Examples:
It was time to celebrate Chinese New Year! (refers to time)
It is a traditional food for celebrating Chinese New Year. (refers to a thing - dumplings)
It was almost impossible for Lisa to move. (real subject: to move; it as formal subject)
It is a tradition to eat 12 grapes as the bells sound at midnight. (real subject: to eat 12 grapes...; it as formal subject)
It's like saying goodbye to the old year and making room for good luck in the new year. (refers to the action of throwing old clothes)
It will be fun to travel to Hainan this coming New Year. (real subject: to travel to Hainan...; it as formal subject)
It is very warm to celebrate the New Year with the weather. (real subject: to celebrate the New Year...; it refers to weather)
It was 6 p.m. when we were having New Year's Eve dinner together. (refers to time)
It is interesting and meaningful to make these resolutions. (real subject: to make these resolutions; it as formal subject)
It is sometimes hard to keep up with them. (real subject: to keep up with them; it as formal subject)
It takes lots of time to make changes. (real subject: to make changes; it as formal subject)
Next year, it will be a good idea for me to exercise more. (real subject: to exercise more; it as formal subject)
2. Key sentences
Study the blue parts and answer: What does the pronoun it in each sentence mean
Read the sentences and write down the meaning of it in each sentence.
Rewrite the blue parts of the following sentences with it.
Complete the passage about New Year's resolutions with it sentences.
Here are some common New Year's resolutions. Tick three resolutions you would like to make. Then use it to make up sentences.

Analyze examples
T: Study the blue parts and answer: What does the pronoun it in each sentence mean Look at sentences about Chinese New Year celebration.

Determine “it” meaning

Step 3 Rewrite sentences with “it” (Activity C3)
Rewrite blue parts
T: Rewrite the blue parts of the following sentences with it.
Ask Ss to rewrite sentences using it as a formal subject or for reference (e.g., It will be fun to travel to Hainan this coming New Year.). Then check and discuss.
Step 4 Complete passage with “it” (Activity C4)
Complete New Year's resolutions passage
T: Complete the passage about New Year's resolutions with it sentences.
Ask Ss to fill in blanks using it (e.g., It is interesting and meaningful to make these resolutions., It is sometimes hard to keep up with them., It takes lots of time to make changes.). Then check and discuss.
Step 5 Create sentences with “it” (Activity C5)
Make sentences from resolutions
T: Here are some common New Year's resolutions. Tick three resolutions you would like to make. Then use it to make up sentences.
Ask Ss to choose resolutions and create sentences (e.g., It will be a good idea for me to start a new hobby next year.). Then share sentences in pairs.
IV. Assessment of Teaching Effectiveness
Assess Ss' understanding of “it” uses via answers in C1.
Observe accuracy in determining “it” meaning in C2.
Evaluate ability to rewrite sentences with “it” in C3 and complete the passage in C4.
Assess Ss' creativity and accuracy in creating sentences with “it” in C5.
