一、阅读理解(共40分)

(本题8分)Although obesity and diabetes (糖尿病) have been linked to an increased risk of COVID-19, as well as an increased risk of experiencing serious symptoms once infected, the impact of diet on these risks is unknown. In a recent study led by researchers at Harvard-attached Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), people whose diets were based on healthy plant-based foods had lower risks on both counts.
“Previous reports suggest that poor nutrition is a common feature among groups affected by the pandemic, but data on the association between diet and COVID-19 risk and severity are lacking,” says lead author Jordi Merino, a researcher at MGH.
For the study, Merino and his colleagues examined data on 592,571 participants of the smartphone-based COVID-19 Symptom Study. Participants lived in the U.K. and the U.S., and they were recruited (招募) from March 24, 2020 and followed until Dec. 2, 2020. At the start of the study, participants completed a questionnaire that asked about their dietary habits before the pandemic. Diet quality was assessed using a healthful Plant-Based Diet Score that emphasizes healthy plant foods such as fruits and vegetables. During follow-up, 31,831 participants developed COVID-pared with individuals in the lowest quarter of the diet score, those in the highest quarter had a 9 percent lower risk of developing COVID-19 and a 41 percent lower risk of developing severe COVID-19.
“Although we cannot emphasize enough the importance of getting vaccinated (疫苗) and wearing a mask in crowded indoor settings, our study suggests that individuals can also potentially reduce their risk of getting COVID-19 by paying attention to their diet,” says co-senior author Andrew Chan, a chief of the Clinical at MGH. The results also suggest that public health strategies that improve access to healthy foods may help to reduce the burden of the COVID-19 pandemic. “Our findings are a call to governments and to prioritize healthy diets and wellbeing with effective policies, otherwise we risk losing decades of economic progress,” says Merino.

(本题8分)Seagrass meadows (海草床) are wonder plants growing beneath the sea. They feed and shelter sea life and are masterful at storing carbon. Thanks to the assistance of tiger sharks, a huge seagrass meadow in the Bahamas Banks has been discovered, offering the world a tool to fight climate change.
Seagrass has usually been detected by Earth-orbiting satellites that identify darker spots in the blue water. In a recent study, tiger sharks were selected as research tools due to their highly consistent associations with seagrass ecosystems. They spent 70% of their time in seagrass meadows. The team equipped eight tiger sharks with satellite labels, seven sharks with camera labels, and used a 360-degree camera on a shark for the first time ever.
The data researchers collected was astonishing. The world’s largest seagrass ecosystem, measuring at least 66,900 square kilometers, has been discovered. This reflects a 41% increase from previous estimates of global seagrass. Seagrass can capture (捕获) huge quantities of carbon by photosynthesis (光合作用) and stores it on the seafloor. In terms of climate change, this is excellent news; seagrass is 35 times faster at removing carbon than tropical rainforests. When referring to global seagrass carbon stock estimates, the study indicates that seagrass in the Bahamas may contain 19.2% to 26.3% of all the carbon stored in seagrass meadows on Earth.
Yet seagrass meadows are rapidly disappearing, with over 92% of meadows in the UK gone, according to the World Wildlife Fund. Scientists are collecting seeds and trying to grow new seagrass meadows through restoration projects. This new discovery offers optimism and proves the importance of the ocean for healing.
The sharks led us to the seagrass ecosystem in the Bahamas, which we now know is likely the most significant blue carbon sink on the planet. What this discovery shows us is that ocean exploration and research are essential for a healthy future. The undeveloped potential of the ocean is limitless. These meadows can be protected and can be copied, offering hope for climate change around the globe.
9.(2分)How was the seagrass meadow in the Bahamas Banks discovered
A.By analyzing satellites images.
B.By keeping track of tiger sharks.
C.By using a 360-degree camera.
D.By carrying out restoration projects.

(本题8分)It was New Year's night. An aged man was standing at a window. He raised his sad eyes towards the deep blue sky, where the stars were floating like white lilies (百合花) on the surface of a clear calm lake. Then he cast them on the earth, where few more hopeless people than himself moved towards their certain goal—the tomb. He had already passed sixty of the stages leading to it, and he had brought from his journey nothing but errors and regrets.
The days of his youth appeared like dreams before him, and he remembered the serious moment when his father placed him at the entrance of the two roads—one leading to a peaceful, sunny place, covered with flowers, fruits and resounding with soft, sweet songs; the other leading to a deep, dark cave, which was endless, where poisonous snakes hissed and crawled.
He saw a star fall from the sky and disappear, and this was the symbol of himself. His regret, which was like a sharp arrow, struck deeply into his heart. Then he remembered his friends in his childhood, who entered on life together with him. But they had made their way to success and were honored and happy on this New Year's night. With shame and grief he dared no longer look towards that heaven where his father lived. His darkened eyes were full of tears, and with a despairing effort, he let out a cry, “Come back, my early days! Come back!”
And his youth did return, for all this was only a dream which he had on New Year's night. He was still young though his faults were real; he had not yet entered the deep, dark cave, and he was still free to walk on the road which leads to the peaceful and sunny land.
As for those who still remain at the entrance of life, hesitating to choose the bright road, remember that when years have passed and your feet fall on the dark mountains, you will cry bitterly, but in vain, “Oh youth, return! Oh give me back my early days!”

A.His father died.

A.It's no use crying for help.

(本题8分)Foreign visitors to the UK might be disappointed when they learn that not everyone there speaks like Harry Potter and his friends. Usually, there’s an assumption by many non-Brits that everyone in Britain speaks with what’s known as a Received Pronunciation accent, also called “the Queen’s English”. However, while many people do talk this way, most Britons speak in their own regional accents.
Scouse, Glaswegian and Black Country dialect- from Liverpool, Glasgow and the West Midlands -are just three of the countless non-RP accents that British people speak with. There are even differences in accents between towns or cities just 30 kilometers apart. What is even more disappointing is that not speaking in a RP accent may mean a British person is judged and even treated differently in their everyday life.
In a study by The University of South Wales, videos of people reading a passage in three different UK accents were shown to a second group of people. The group then rated how intelligent they thought the readers sounded. The lowest-rated accent was Brummie, native to people from Birmingham, a city whose accent is considered working class. However, there is no need to be disappointed though you are not speaking in an RP accent. In fact, doing the opposite may even give you strength.
Kong Seong- jae, 25, is from Seoul. After studying in the UK, he picked up several regional accents. He’s now famous for his online videos, where he shows off the various accents he’s learned. “British people usually get really excited when I use some of their local dialect words, and they become much friendlier. I think it makes a bit of bond between local people and foreigners to speak in their local accent,” he said.
So if you’re working on perfecting your British accent, try to speak like someone from Liverpool, Glasgow or Birmingham. You may not sound like Harry Potter, but you are likely to make more friends.
17.(2分)What can we learn from paragraph 1
A.Most Britons speak the Queen’s English.
B.Foreign visitors are disappointed at their own spoken English.
C.Non-Brits usually hold that all Britons speak in a RP accent.
D.The dialect is less important than the RP accent.
18.(2分)What do people think of the Brummie accent
A.It is closest to the RP accent. B.It is smart and easy to understand.
C.It belongs to the people of the working class. D.It is preferred by foreign visitors to the UK.
19.(2分)What does the underlined phrase “doing the opposite” in Paragraph 3 refer to
A.Speaking with the RP accent. B.Speaking with regional accents.
C.Speaking with the Brummie accent. D.Speaking like Harry Potter.
20.(2分)What is the passage mainly about
A.How much British people value the RP accent.
