I. Teaching Objectives
Guide students to analyze a model news report about sportsmanship, understanding structure (headline, introduction, body, conclusion) and action verbs.
Develop students’ ability to write a structured news report of a sportsmanship moment, using action verbs to describe key actions.
Enhance writing skills by practicing outline use, clear action verbs, and peer review for improvement.
II. Language Knowledge
1. Key words & phrases
News report structure: headline, reporter & date, introduction, body, conclusion
Action verbs: jump, run, push, encourage, congratulate
Sportsmanship: support, effort, respect, accept losing
2. Key sentences
“In the 13th school sports meeting, Sarah and Lisa showed true sportsmanship.” (introduction example).
“Lisa, a few steps behind, reached out her hand and helped Sarah up.” (action verbs in body).
3. Key and challenging points
News Report Structure: Organizing writing with clear sections (headline → details → quotes).
Action Verbs: Using vivid verbs (reached, helped) to describe sportsmanship moments.
Quote Integration: Including character quotes to add authenticity (e.g., Lisa’s “I just wanted to help her!”).
III. Teaching Procedures
Step 1: Analyze the Model (10 minutes)
Study the Model:
Read the Sarah & Lisa news plete Task 1: Tick action verbs (reached out her hand, helped Sarah up). Explain: These verbs show Lisa’s sportsmanship.
Structure Breakdown:
Identify parts: Headline (catches attention), Introduction (event + main action), Body (details + quotes), Conclusion (impact).
Discuss: Why quotes matter (“They make the story real—show Lisa’s thoughts.”)
Step 2: Plan Your News Report (15 minutes)
Recall Sportsmanship Moments:
Students think of a school sports event (e.g., race, basketball) with good sportsmanship.
Action Verb Grouping (Step 2):
Group action verbs into before, during, after a sports event (e.g., introduce each other (before), pass the ball (during), congratulate on success (after)).
Outline Creation:
Draft a 3 - part outline:
Headline: Catchy title (e.g., “Teammates Support Each Other in Close Race”).
Body: Use action verbs to describe key moments (e.g., “Alex tripped, but Jamie stopped and helped him up.”).
Quote: Add a character’s words (e.g., “I wanted us to finish together,” said Jamie).
Step 3: Write the News Report (10 minutes)
Draft Writing:
Follow the model to write a 5 - 6 sentence report. Include:
Clear structure (headline, details, quote).
3+ action verbs (e.g., stopped, helped, finished).
Self - Check:
Students use Step 4 questions to check: action verbs, news report form, necessary details.
Step 4: Peer Review & Revise (5 minutes)
Peer Feedback:
Pairs exchange reports. Use Step 5 to check: structure, action verbs, sportsmanship details.
Revise:
Students make 1 - 2 changes based on feedback (e.g., add a quote, replace a weak verb).
Step 5: Summary & Extension (5 minutes)
Recap: News report structure, action verbs, and sportsmanship storytelling.
Extension: Share your report with another class, or interview a sports teacher for a “sportsmanship quote.”

Evaluate final reports based on:
News report structure (headline, body, conclusion).
Vivid action verbs describing sportsmanship.
Authentic quotes and details.
V. Design Purpose
Model - Based Learning: Breaks down news report structure using a relatable sports example.
Action Verbs Focus: Emphasizes vivid verbs to make sportsmanship moments engaging.
Peer Collaboration: Encourages feedback to improve clarity and detail in writing.
