Step 1 Lead-in 1. Read the text in Activity 1 and underline the key information about the Sun and Earth. 2. Observe the table and learn how to compare and contrast similar things.
Step 2 Reading& Learning Observe the picture in Activity 2 and predict. Read the text and complete the table. Then check the answers. 根据学生完成表格的情况,判断他们对比较与对比这一思维技能的掌握情况。
设计意图:引导学生运用比较与对比这一技能对比内行星和外行星的差异,为进一步在现实生活中运用所学做好铺垫。
Step 3 Pair work 1. Work in pairs. Discuss the differences between the inner planets and outer planets based on Activity 2. 2. Some students share their answers in class. 观察学生讨论内行星和外行星差异的表现,给予必要的指导。
设计意图:引导学生结合自身认知,讨论内行星和外行星的差异,加深对行星差异的理解,培养合作探究精神。
Step 4 Reading strategies Read the text in Activity 1 and underline the topic sentence for the main idea and the key sentences for each supporting detail. Read the text in Activity 1 again and complete the summary in Activity 2. Check the answers. Read the text in Activity 3 and underline the important information, and then complete the summary. Thinking Skills: Comparing and contrasting
How to compare and contrast
Exercise 1 Read the text and complete the table.
The Earth is the largest rocky planet in our solar system. Its diameter is about 12,742 kilometers. From space, Earth looks blue and green because of its oceans, clouds, and green land areas. And the Earth is the only planet known to support life.
The Moon is much smaller than Earth. Its diameter is about 3,474 kilometers, about one-fourth the size of Earth. The Moon is gray with dark spots. No life exists on the Moon. Temperatures range from extremely hot during the day to freezing cold at night.
Object Size Diameter Color With life
Earth Yes
Moon smaller
Exercise 2 Read the text and answer the questions.
Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun. It is much smaller than Earth, with a diameter of about 6,779 kilometers. Its surface is covered with reddish rocks and dust. It has a thin atmosphere made mostly of carbon dioxide. The temperature on Mars can be as warm as 20°C in summer but drops to -80°C or lower at night. Mars is about 228 million kilometers away from the Sun.
Jupiter is the fifth planet from the Sun and the largest in our solar system. Its diameter is about 139,820 kilometers—11 times wider than Earth! Jupiter is a gas giant, made mostly of gas. The planet is very cold, with cloud-top temperatures around -145°C. Jupiter is much farther from the Sun, about 778 million kilometers away.
Object Group Elements Distance from the sun Temperature
Earth Yes
Moon smaller
Reading Strategies: Summarizing
Exercise :Read the text and complete the summary.
Protecting the Earth is very important. Here are three reasons.
First, the Earth gives us what we need to live. It gives us air to breathe and water to drink. It also gives us food and a place to live. Second, the Earth is home to many animals and plants. They need a clean and healthy environment to live too. Third, the Earth’s resources are less and less. Clean water, fresh air, and healthy soil won’t last forever if we waste them. Cutting down too many trees, polluting oceans, and burning fuels harm both nature and people.
The text mainly talks about _______________________.
In the text, we find _______________________, __________________________, and ______________________________.
2. Humans explore the universe for many reasons. First, we want to understand the universe and know what is out there in space. There are so many stars and planets. We want to see if there is life on other planets. Second, exploring the universe helps us learn more about science. We can learn about astronomy, physics, and other sciences. This knowledge can help us improve our lives on Earth. Third, exploring the universe can help us find new resources. These resources can be used to help people on Earth.
The text is mainly about why _______________________.
The main reasons are _______________________, __________________________, and ______________________________.
