Look and Say
The family had a busy week. Dad worked late, Mum had meetings, and the children (Lily and Leo) had school and clubs. Now the house needs some TLC (Tender Loving Care)! What chores need to be done to make their home clean, comfortable, and sweet again before the weekend fun begins
sweep the floor / mop the floor (扫地/拖地)
clean the kitchen (清洁厨房)
wipe the table (擦桌子)
wash the dishes / do the dishes (洗碗)
take out the rubbish / trash (倒垃圾)
make the beds (整理床铺)
tidy up the living room (整理客厅)
water the plants (浇花)
feed the pet (喂宠物)
do the laundry (洗衣服)
put away the clothes (收拾衣服)
Work in pairs. Student A is Lily or Leo (the child). Student B is Mum, Dad, or the other child. Make up short conversations using Can/Could. Ask for help with a chore, offer to help, or explain why you can’t help right now.

A (Leo): Dad, can you help me clean the kitchen It’s a big job.
B (Dad): Sorry, Leo, I can’t help right now. I have to take out the rubbish and then fix the tap. Could you start cleaning the counter first
A (Leo): Okay, Dad. I can do that. Can I clean the stove later I want to finish my homework first.
B (Dad): Yes, you can clean the stove later. Thanks for helping!

Read the questions with can or could. Notice how they are answered. Then write R for requests or P for permission next to each question.

What’s the situation when we use Could/Can you...
What’s the situation when we use Could/Can I...
It’s used for making requests or asking others to do something politely.
It’s used for asking for permission or asking others to allow us to do something politely.
Could is more polite and formal than Can.
表达请求的句型
Can you +动词原型+…? 用于向对方提出请求,语气较为直接,适合用于非正式场合或熟悉的人之间。例如:
Can you help me with my homework
Can you pass me the salt
Could you (please)+动词原型+…?用于向对方提出请求,语气比 Can you... 更委婉、更礼貌,适合用于正式场合或不熟悉的人之间。例如:
Could you please speak more slowly
Could you tell me the way to the station
肯定回答:Yes, sure. / Of course./Certainly./Sure./No problem./ Yes, I can./...
否定回答:Sorry, I can’t. I have to.../I’m afraid I can’t. I have to.../I’m afraid not./...
对于请求句型的回答
对于Could you ... 表示请求的回答,均不能用could,而要用can。
征得允许的句型
Can I/we +动词原型+…?用于征得对方的允许,语气较为直接,适合用于非正式场合或熟悉的人之间。例如:
Can I borrow your book
Can I use your phone
Could I/we +动词原型+…?用于征得对方的允许,语气比 Can I... 更委婉、更礼貌,适合用于正式场合或不熟悉的人之间。例如:
Could I have a cup of coffee
Could I hang out with my friends this weekend
对于征得允许句型的回答
肯定回答:Yes, please. / Of course you can./ Certainly. / Sure. / Yes, you can./...
否定回答:Sorry, you can’t./I’m afraid you can’t. /No, you can’t. You have to.../...
对于Could I/we ... 表示征得允许的回答,均不能用could而要用can。
