Starter Welcome to junior high!-Make a wishing tree教学设计
This module, "Make a Wishing Tree", is an exciting and engaging project - based activity designed for Grade 7 students. It is part of the Starter unit "Welcome to junior high!" in the 2024 edition of the FLTRP English textbook. The main theme of this module is to help students transition smoothly into junior high school life by encouraging them to think about their wishes and goals for this new stage of study.
The module starts with an introduction to the concept of a "wishing tree", which is a creative and fun way for students to express their aspirations. Students are guided to think about various aspects of their junior high school life, such as academic achievements, new friendships, hobbies they want to develop, and personal growth. They will then create "wish leaves", on which they write down their wishes using English. After that, they will add these leaves to the "wishing tree" set up in the classroom. The final step is for students to make plans on how to achieve their wishes and share these plans with their classmates. This process not only allows students to practice their English language skills but also helps them set positive goals for their junior high school journey and promotes communication and cooperation among them.
教学目标 Students will be able to master relevant vocabulary related to wishes and junior high school life, such as "wish", "goal", "plan", "achieve", "junior high school", "subject", "club", "friendship", etc. They can understand and correctly use the simple future tense to express wishes and plans, for example, "I will...", "I am going to...", "I want to...".

教学过程
A. Lead - in (5 minutes)
Greet the students and start a simple conversation. "Hello, everyone! Welcome to our English class. How are you feeling about starting junior high school "
Show some pictures of students in junior high school, including pictures of classrooms, school clubs, and students playing sports. Then ask students: "What can you see in these pictures What do you think junior high school life will be like "
Introduce the concept of a "wishing tree". "Today, we are going to start a very interesting project. It's about making a 'wishing tree'. In many cultures, people believe that writing down their wishes and putting them on a tree can bring good luck. Let's make our own wishing tree for our junior high school life."
B. Knowledge Presentation (10 minutes)
Vocabulary Teaching
Present the new vocabulary related to wishes and junior high school life on the blackboard or using PPT. Teach the pronunciation, meaning, and usage of each word one by one. For example, when teaching "wish", say: "Look at this word 'wish'. It is pronounced as /w /. A wish is something you really want. For example, I have a wish to travel around the world."
Let students repeat the words several times to practice the pronunciation. Then do a quick word - matching activity. Write some words on one side of the blackboard and their definitions on the other side, and ask students to match them.
Grammar Teaching: Simple Future Tense
Use some examples to introduce the simple future tense. Write on the blackboard: "I will make new friends in junior high school." and "I am going to study English hard." Explain the two forms of the simple future tense (will + verb 原形 and be going to + verb 原形) and their usage for expressing future plans.
Do some substitution drills. Give students a sentence like "I will ______ (play football) after school." and ask them to fill in the blank with different verbs according to their own plans.
C. Activity 1: Thinking about Wishes (10 minutes)
Divide students into small groups of 4 - 5.
Give each group a piece of paper and ask them to write down as many aspects of junior high school life as they can think of, such as study, hobbies, friends, etc. on the paper.
Then, ask each student in the group to think about their own wishes in these aspects. For example, in the aspect of study, a student might wish to get good grades in Maths; in the aspect of hobbies, a student might wish to learn to play the guitar.
Walk around the classroom, listen to students' discussions, and offer help if necessary.
D. Activity 2: Making Wish Leaves (10 minutes)
Distribute green paper cut - outs in the shape of leaves to each student.
Instruct students to write their wishes on the leaves using the simple future tense. For example, "I will get better grades in English." or "I am going to join the basketball club." Encourage them to decorate their leaves with some simple drawings if they like.
While students are writing, play some soft music in the background to create a relaxed atmosphere.
E. Activity 3: Creating the Wishing Tree and Sharing Plans (10 minutes)
Set up a "wishing tree" in the classroom. It can be a large drawing on the blackboard or a real - looking tree made of branches and placed in a corner.
Ask students to come to the "wishing tree" one by one and stick their wish leaves on it.
After all the leaves are on the tree, randomly select some students to come to the front of the class. Ask them to share not only their wishes but also their plans on how to achieve these wishes. For example, if a student's wish is "I will get better grades in Maths", their plan might be "I am going to do more Maths exercises every day and ask the teacher for help when I have problems."
Other students listen carefully and can ask questions or give suggestions.
F. Summary and Homework (5 minutes)
Summary
Summarize the key points of this class, including the new vocabulary and the usage of the simple future tense. Review the process of making the "wishing tree" and the importance of setting goals and making plans.
Praise students for their active participation and creative wishes.
Homework
Ask students to write a short passage about their wishes and plans for junior high school life at home. They should include at least 5 sentences using the simple future tense.
Encourage students to stick to their plans and work hard to achieve their wishes in the future.
教学反思
After teaching this module, I first noticed students' high enthusiasm for the "Make a Wishing Tree" activity. The creative and practical nature of the project effectively engaged students, which was a positive aspect. In terms of knowledge acquisition, most students seemed to grasp the new vocabulary related to wishes and junior high school life, as well as the basic usage of the simple future tense for expressing wishes and plans. However, during the process of students thinking about wishes and making plans, I found that some students had difficulty in thinking deeply and specifically. For example, some wishes were too general, like "I will be happy in junior high school", and the corresponding plans were also rather vague. In future teaching, I should provide more specific guidance and examples to help students clarify their thoughts.
In the group work and sharing sessions, although most students actively participated, there were still a few students who were relatively quiet and less involved. I need to find ways to encourage these students to express themselves more, perhaps by creating a more relaxed and inclusive environment or by giving them more individual attention. Additionally, in terms of language accuracy, some students made mistakes when using the simple future tense in their oral and written expressions. This indicates that more grammar practice and error - correction activities are needed in subsequent classes. Overall, this teaching experience has provided me with valuable insights for improving my future teaching methods and strategies.
