This lesson is from Unit 2 "More than fun" of the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press (2024) English textbook for Grade 7. It focuses on the topic of hobbies. Through various activities, students will further explore the benefits of hobbies, express their own ideas about hobbies, and learn how to cooperate with others to present their ideas. The content includes vocabulary related to hobbies, sentence patterns for expressing opinions, and group discussion activities.
教学目标 Students will be able to master relevant vocabulary and sentence patterns about hobbies, such as "collect stamps", "play the guitar", "I think...", "In my opinion...", and use them to describe their hobbies and the fun and benefits they bring fluently.Students can use the "there be" structure and past tense to describe experiences related to hobbies accurately.

Review of the "there be" structure: There is a book on the desk. There are many students in the classroom.
Simple past tense for describing past experiences related to hobbies: I played basketball with my friends yesterday. I collected a lot of stamps last year.
教学过程
1. Warming - up (5 minutes)
Greet the students as usual. Then show some pictures of different hobbies on the PPT, such as a boy playing soccer, a girl reading a book, and someone painting. Ask students to look at the pictures and say what hobbies they see as quickly as possible.
Encourage students to share their own hobbies briefly. For example, call on some students and ask: "What's your hobby Can you tell us a little about it "
2. New Knowledge Presentation (10 minutes)
Vocabulary Teaching
Present new vocabulary about hobbies on the PPT one by one. Teach students how to read these words correctly, paying attention to pronunciation and intonation. For example, when teaching "collect stamps", read it slowly first: /k lekt st mps/, and then let students repeat several times.
Use pictures or real objects (if possible) to help students understand the meaning of the words. For instance, show a real stamp when teaching "stamp".
Sentence Pattern Teaching
Write some common sentence patterns for expressing hobbies and opinions on the blackboard, like "I like... because...", "My favorite hobby is...", "I think...". Explain the usage and meaning of each pattern.
Give some examples for each pattern: "I like reading because it can open my mind." "My favorite hobby is dancing. It makes me feel energetic." "I think playing basketball is a great way to keep fit." Let students read the examples aloud and understand them.
3. Text Learning (10 minutes)
Present a short passage about hobbies on the PPT. The passage can introduce some common hobbies among students and the benefits they bring.
Ask students to read the passage quickly for the first time to get the general idea. Then, ask them some simple questions, such as "What are the main hobbies mentioned in the passage " "What benefits do these hobbies bring "
Let students read the passage carefully for the second time. While reading, ask them to underline the new words and sentence patterns they have just learned in the passage.
Explain the difficult sentences and new knowledge points in the passage. For example, if there is a sentence like "In my opinion, playing musical instruments not only makes us relaxed but also develops our creativity", explain the phrase "not only... but also..." to students.
After that, ask students to retell the passage in their own words in groups. Each group chooses a representative to retell the passage in front of the class later.
4. Group Discussion (12 minutes)
Divide students into groups of 4 - 5. Present a discussion topic to each group, such as "Which hobby do you think is the most beneficial for middle school students and why " or "If you could start a new hobby club at school, what kind of club would you start and how would you organize it "
Let students discuss in groups. Encourage each student to express their opinions. Remind them to use the vocabulary and sentence patterns they have learned, like "I think...", "In my opinion...", "I believe...". Walk around the classroom, listen to their discussions, and offer help and guidance when necessary. For example, if a student has trouble expressing an idea, help them find the right words or correct their grammar mistakes.
After the discussion, each group chooses a representative to present their group's ideas to the whole class. The representatives should stand in front of the class, speak clearly, and use proper body language.
5. Summary and Homework (8 minutes)
Summary
Summarize the key points of this lesson with students, including new vocabulary, sentence patterns, and the main ideas about hobbies. Review the importance of hobbies and how to express opinions about them.
Ask students if they have any questions or if there is anything they don't understand. Answer their questions.
Homework
Ask students to write a short passage about their hobbies, including what their hobbies are, why they like them, and what benefits they have got from their hobbies. The passage should be at least 80 words.
Encourage students to share their hobbies with their family members in English at home.
教学反思
After teaching this lesson, I made the following reflections:
1. Successes
The warming - up activity was effective in attracting students' attention and quickly getting them involved in the topic of hobbies. Most students were actively engaged in sharing their hobbies, which created a lively classroom atmosphere.
The use of pictures and real - life examples in vocabulary teaching helped students understand the new words better. They could remember the words more easily and were able to use them in simple sentences during the class.
Group discussion provided students with a good opportunity to practice speaking English and expressing their opinions. They learned from each other, and their cooperation ability was also improved. Some students showed very creative ideas during the discussion.
2. Deficiencies
In the text - learning part, some students had difficulty understanding long and complex sentences. Although I explained them in detail, it still took more time than expected. Maybe I could use more simple and vivid ways to help them understand, such as using pictures or making analogies.
When students were presenting their group ideas in front of the class, some of them were very nervous, which affected their performance. I should have given them more guidance on public - speaking skills in advance, such as how to stand, how to make eye contact with the audience, and how to control their voices.
For the homework, some students might find it difficult to write a passage with at least 80 words. I should have given them more writing guidance in class, such as providing an outline or more sample sentences.
3. Improvements
In future teaching, I will pay more attention to the selection of teaching materials and simplify complex sentences appropriately to make them more accessible to students.
Before group presentations, I will arrange some special training on public - speaking skills, such as organizing short - term mock presentations in class to let students get used to speaking in front of others.
When assigning writing homework, I will give more detailed guidance, like showing some sample passages and guiding students to analyze the structure and language use of these passages. Then, I will ask students to write an outline first and then start writing the full passage.
