Unit 3 Family ties-Starting out教学设计
This unit focuses on the theme of "Family ties", which is closely related to students' daily lives. The Starting out section serves as an introduction to the whole unit, aiming to activate students' prior knowledge and interest in family topics. It mainly consists of two activities. Activity 1 presents several pictures showing different family activities, such as having a meal together, watching TV, and playing games. By observing and describing these pictures, students are encouraged to think about their own family activities and the importance of family time. Activity 2 shows pictures of different family members and asks students to talk about what each person in their family does and what they think the word "family" stands for. This activity helps students review and expand their vocabulary related to family members and deepens their understanding of the concept of family. Through these two activities, students are gradually led into the exploration of family relationships in this unit.
教学目标 Students can master the key vocabulary related to family members, such as father, mother, sister, brother, grandfather, grandmother, etc., and words and phrases about family activities, like have a meal, watch TV, play games, go shopping, etc.Students can understand and use possessive nouns to describe family relationships and family belongings, e.g., This is my father's car. Tania is Catherine's grandmother.Students can correctly use the present continuous tense to describe family activities that are happening now, e.g., My family are having dinner together.

教学过程
1. Warming - up (5 minutes)
Greet the students as usual. Then show some pictures of famous families on the PPT, such as the royal family of the UK. Ask students some simple questions, like "Do you know who they are " "What do you think of their family " This can arouse students' interest and lead in the topic of family.
2. Lead - in (5 minutes)
Show the pictures in Activity 1 on the textbook. Let students look at the pictures carefully and ask them to describe what each family is doing in the pictures in pairs. For example, "In the first picture, the family are sitting at the table and having a meal." Walk around the classroom to listen to their conversations and give necessary guidance. Then invite several pairs of students to share their descriptions with the whole class.
3. Vocabulary Presentation (10 minutes)
After the pair - work in the lead - in part, present the new vocabulary about family members and family activities on the PPT. Teach the pronunciation of these words one by one, and let students read after the teacher several times.
Use some small games to help students remember the words. For example, play the "What's missing" game. Show all the family member words on the PPT for students to look at for 30 seconds, then hide one word and ask students to tell what the missing word is. Do the same for family activity words.
4. Activity 2 (10 minutes)
Show the pictures in Activity 2. First, ask students to look at the pictures and think about the questions: "What does each person in your family do " and "What do you think the word 'family' stands for " Let students think individually for a while.
Then organize students to have a group discussion. Divide students into groups of 4 - 5. In the group, each student shares their ideas about the two questions. Encourage students to give as many details as possible. For example, when talking about what their family members do, they can say "My father is a doctor. He helps many patients every day."
After the group discussion, invite some group representatives to report their group's discussion results to the class. Listen carefully and give positive feedback and comments.
5. Grammar Explanation (8 minutes)
Introduce the possessive nouns. Write some examples on the blackboard, such as "This is Lily's bag." "These are the boys' books." Explain the formation and usage of possessive nouns as mentioned in the knowledge list. Use some more examples to illustrate, like "The dog's name is Coco." "The teachers' office is on the second floor." Let students make some sentences using possessive nouns by themselves, and then ask several students to share their sentences with the class for correction and confirmation.
Next, explain the present continuous tense. Show some pictures on the PPT with actions happening, like a girl is reading a book, a boy is playing basketball. Write the corresponding sentences on the blackboard: "The girl is reading a book." "The boy is playing basketball." Explain the structure and usage of the present continuous tense. Then give students some prompts, such as "your mother/cook in the kitchen", "your brother/do homework in the study", and ask them to make sentences using the present continuous tense.
6. Summary and Homework (7 minutes)
Summarize the key points of this class, including the new vocabulary, the usage of possessive nouns and present continuous tense. Review the main content of family members and family activities that students have discussed.
Assign homework:
Ask students to draw a picture of their own family and write a short passage to describe their family members and what they are doing in the picture using the knowledge they have learned in this class, including possessive nouns and present continuous tense.
Let students talk about their family with their parents in English at home.
教学反思
In this class, through various activities such as picture - description, group discussion, and grammar exercises, most students showed a high level of enthusiasm and actively participated in class. However, in the grammar explanation part, some students still had difficulty in using possessive nouns and present continuous tense correctly. In the future teaching, more real - life examples and practice opportunities should be provided to help students master grammar knowledge better.
The group discussion in Activity 2 was relatively successful, which improved students' communicative and cooperative abilities. But during the group work, some students dominated the discussion, while a few students were a little passive. In the following classes, more attention should be paid to the participation of every student, and group - forming strategies can be adjusted to ensure that each student has the opportunity to express themselves.
Overall, this class achieved most of the teaching objectives, but there are still some aspects that need to be improved and optimized in the future teaching process.
