Sam and Tom were twins. They were so alike that even their mother found it difficult to tell one from the other. However, they were very different from each other when it came to everything other than their appearance. Sam had no friends, while Tom was a great friendship maker. Sam loved sweets, but Tom loved spicy food and detested sweets. Sam was Mommy’s pet and Tom was Daddy’s pet. While Sam was generous and selfless, Tom was greedy (贪婪的) and selfish!
As Sam and Tom grew up, their father wanted to share his fortune equally between them. However, Tom did not agree and he argued that whoever, proved to be stronger and cleverer would have to get a bigger share of the wealth. Sam agreed. Their father decided to organize a competition. He asked them to walk as long as they could, and return home before sunset. The wealth would be divided according to the distance covered. But they were not allowed to carry a watch to keep track of the time.
The following day, Sam and Tom set out to walk. It was a rather sunny day. Sam walked slowly and steadily, while Tom broke into a sprint (全速奔跑) as he wanted to win so much. Sam knew that it would be ideal to walk as far as possible till noon and start for home at noon as it would take the same amount of time to walk back home. Knowing this, Sam decided to turn back for home at noon so as to reach home on time.
However, Tom, with his greed to earn more wealth, did not try to return home even after mid-noon. He walked twice as long as Sam, and thought he would still be able to return home before sunset. He hurried back when he saw the sun turn orange. Unfortunately, he could not even make it half way home as the sun started to set. Slowly, it got very dark on his way and he had to drag his tired feet back home. He lost the race, only because of his greed.

A British friend told me he couldn’t understand why Chinese people love cracking sunflower seeds (磕瓜子) as a snack so much. “I’ve met a lot of older Chinese and many have a crack (裂缝) in their front teeth; I believe that’s from cracking the seeds,” he said.
I had never noticed the habit but once he mentioned it, I suddenly became more aware. I realized that whenever I’m watching TV or typing a report, I always start mindlessly cracking sunflower seeds. My friend doesn’t like sunflower seeds, and, to him, it seems unnecessary to work so much just to get one small seed.
When we were young, the whole family would usually get together for Chinese New Year. Then, we all lived close to one another, usually in a small city, and sometimes even neighbors would go door-to-door on Chinese New Year’s Eve to check out what every family was making.
I remember my parents would be in the kitchen cooking. Out in the living room, a large table would already be laid out, complete with fancy tablecloth, ready-made dumpling fillings, and dishes full of candy, fruits and sunflower seeds. Some of the dishes were to be offered to our ancestors later, while others were for neighbors and children to eat before the evening feast. I must have learned how to crack sunflower seeds back then.
I don’t think it’s right to criticize one’s choice in food or eating habits, no matter how strange they may seem.
It’s not only in China. When I went abroad, I found people had all kinds of strange habits when it came to food. In Denmark, they put salted red fish on bread and eat it for dinner, no matter how much it ruins your breath. They think it’s a delicacy (美味佳肴), and it’s connected to their certain culture. I think it’s a wonderful tradition.
28. What did the writer become aware of
A. She had ever typed a report about seeds.
B. She had various snacks while watching TV.
C. She had a habit of cracking sunflower seeds.
D. She damaged her teeth by eating sunflower seeds.
29. What does the writer prove by mentioning Chinese New Year
A. The families get together for it.
B. Eating sunflower seeds is related to it.
C. The traditions of celebrating it disappear.
D. Children can eat delicious food on that day.
30. The writer’s attitude to Denmark’s way of eating bread is _________.
A. negative B. uncertain C. doubtful D. acceptable
31. What lesson can we learn from the story
A. It is good to form healthy eating habits.
B. Eating habits come from a certain culture.
C. Changing your eating habits will change your life.
D. One kind of food doesn’t necessarily suit everyone.
D
According to parents in the United States, the popular children’s cartoon Peppa Pig is changing the way their children speak.
The British show has always been popular, but children have been exposed to it more since the COVID outbreak, when parents were desperate to keep their children occupied while working and attending Zoom calls relied more heavily on Peppa Pig as a babysitter.
According to The W all Street Journal, one California mother recalled her child speaking to her in a British accent and asking, “Mummy, are you going to the optician (眼镜店) ” During the lockdown, her child had watched numerous episodes of the hit children’s show, which is now regularly topping global viewing rankings.
Dominique Parr, a parent, shared a TikTok video of her 3-year-old daughter Hazel repeating lines from the show. The video went viral, receiving over 10 million views and support from parents whose children were adopting a similar accent.
According to Parrot Analytics Ltd, Peppa Pig is one of the world’s most popular cartoons, ranking second on their charts for the past year, just behind SpongeBob Square Pants.
In a statement, the owners of Peppa Pig Entertainment One Ltd. said, “Young Peppa fans see her as a friend and, as we do with friends that we admire, pick up some of their characteristics. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery,” it added.
At the height of the pandemic last year, Amazon Prime Video made Peppa Pig—along with a selection of other family-friendly content — available for free streaming after schools were closed to fight the coronavirus outbreak.
A user on Twitter said, “I have a kid who spoke with a British accent for a year and a half because of Peppa.” “The story about Peppa Pig making kids talk like they’re British is really funny to me because my kid watched it when she was like 4 or 5 and for quite some time, she had a little British accent and I thought it was funny.” another user wrote.
32. Why did children spend more time watching Peppa Pig during the lockdown
A. They had no babysitters.
B. It is well received by children.
C. It helped improve their language levels.
D. Their parents were too busy to care for them.
33. How do children pick up British accent
A. By watching hit shows on TikTok.
B. By following the lines in Peppa Pig.
C. By learning the language at a young age.
D. By self-study after the schools were closed.
34. How do most American parents feel about their children’s British accent
A. Amused. B. Shocked. C. Annoyed. D. Confused.
35. Which of the following could be a best title for the text
A. Cartoons Become a Great Partner of Children
