A
There was once a boy called Mario who loved to have a lot of friends at school. However, he wasn’t sure whether or not his schoolmates were his real friends, so he asked his grandpa for help. The old man told him, “I just have what you exactly need, and it’s in the attic(阁楼). Wait a minute here.”
Grandpa left, soon returning as though carrying something in his hand, but Mario could see nothing there.
“Take it. It’s a very special chair. It’s rather tricky to sit on for it’s invisible, but if you take it to school and manage to sit on it, you’ll be able to tell who your real friends are,” Grandpa said.
Mario was curious to know whether it was true or not, so he took the strange invisible chair and set off for school. At break time, he asked his classmates to form a circle, and then he put himself inside, with his chair. “Nobody moves! You’re about to see something amazing.”
Then Mario tried to sit on the chair, but he missed and fell down onto his back. Everyone had a pretty good laugh about it. Mario wouldn’t be beaten. He kept trying to sit on the magic chair, and kept falling to the ground… until, suddenly, he tried again and didn’t fall over. This time, he sat, hovering(悬浮) in mid-air…
Looking around, Mario saw George, Lucas and Diana — three of his best friends — holding him up, so he wouldn’t fall down. Meanwhile, many others he had thought of as friends did nothing but make fun of him, enjoying his every fall.
Leaving with his three friends, he explained to them how his grandpa had so cleverly thought of a way to show him that true friends are those who care about us, and not just any acquaintance who happens to be passing by. Even less would a real friend be someone who takes joy in our misfortunes.

B.Those who care about us when we are in trouble.

Three days ahead of his 20th birthday, Pan Zhanle of China produced a swim at the Paris Olympics that catapulted (突然处于) him to Olympic gold and international attention. Pan broke his own world record in the 100 metres freestyle, his time of 46.40 seconds at Paris La Defense Arena destroying his previous best of 46.80, set in February.
Born in Wenzhou, Pan is regarded as China’s “flying fish”. Outstanding fitness earned him a spot in the Wenzhou Youth Swimming School’s talent class at the age of four. “Once I started swimming, I couldn’t stop.” Aged 10, Pan made a splash with seven gold medals in five days during the 2014 Zhejiang Provincial Games.
His commitment was such that whereas most swimmers’ mistakes or shortcomings would lead coaches to impose (强加) harder training, Pan’s coach would instead reduce his training as a form of discipline. “I would punish him by not allowing him to get in the pool, and he would feel really uncomfortable,” Pan’s former coach Wang Shi told Chinese media. “He just really loves swimming.” In 2023, Pan made his move. He broke the Asian record in the men’s 100m freestyle at the Chinese national championships with a time of 47.22, a mark he then beat again at that year’s Asian Games in Hangzhou, with 46.97.
In 2022, American swimming coach Mark Schubert suggested that Pan switch to the individual medley (个人混合泳比赛), on the basis that Chinese swimmers were unlikely to beat those of other nations as 100m freestyle specialists. His conclusion seemed to act as a challenge to Pan. “I’m rebellious (叛逆的) by nature,” Pan replied to Schubert after Doha, showing him his gold medal. “The more others doubt my abilities, the more determined I am to prove them wrong.”
5.Why does the author mention the previous record set in February
A.To indicate Pan’s capacity to go beyond himself.
B.To show Pan has gained international attention.
C.To indicate the fierce competition in swimming.
D.To show the record is extremely hard to break.
6.What do the underlined words “made a splash” probably mean
A.Started a better training.
B.Earned a big fortune.
C.Attracted great attention.
D.Caused some trouble.
7.What would make Pan unhappy in the training
A.Failing to meet the coach’s standard.
B.Being punished to train for a longer time.
C.Getting involved in much harder training.
D.Being forbidden to swim in the pool.
8.What can we infer from the last paragraph
A.Pan was inspired by the American coach.
B.Pan always goes against the coach’s advice.
C.Showing off his gold medals is Pan’s habit.
D.Doubt motivates Pan rather than beats him.

Want to know the current population of India The internet is your best bet. Need a quick refresher on the phases of the moon Go ahead, read a story online (or two or three). But if you really need to learn something, you’re probably better off with print. Or at least that’s what a lot of research now suggests.
Researchers find that people tend to read faster on screens. That’s fine for checking texts and social media posts. But when screens are small, the extra scrolling needed to read a long article or book may make it harder to retain what you’re reading, data now shows.
That doesn’t just depend on the device, however. It also depends on what you assume about the text. Naomi Baron calls this your mindset. She says one way mindset works is in anticipating how easy or hard we expect the reading to be. If we think it will be easy, we might not put in much effort.
Much of what we read on screens tends to be text messages and social media posts, which are usually easy to understand. So, “when people read on screens, they read faster,” says Alexander at the University of Maryland. “Their eyes scan the pages and the words faster than if they’re reading on a piece of paper.” But when reading fast, we may not absorb all the ideas as well.
However, all experts agree on one thing: There’s no going back. Digital reading is here to stay. So it pays to make the most of it. It’s a good idea to do a little preparation. Baron compares reading to sports or to playing music. “Watch a pianist or an athlete. Before they run the race or play the concert, they get themselves in the zone,” she says. “It’s the same thing for reading. Before you read something you really want to focus on, get in the zone. Think about what you’ll be reading, and what you want to get from it.”
9.Which is NOT a possible element affecting people’s reading on screens
A.Small screens. B.Reading skills.
C.Simple posts. D.Reader’s mindset.
10.As for digital reading, what may all experts agree on
A.It’s unpredictable. B.It’s unhelpful.
C.It’s unavoidable. D.It’s unacceptable.
11.Why does Baron mention the pianist and the athlete
A.To support an idea.
B.To define a term.
C.To explain a concept.
D.To present the background.
12.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage
A.The Rise of Digital Reading
B.Balancing Print and Digital Reading
C.The Benefits of Print Reading
D.Preparing for the Digital Reading Era

For the past year, I’ve spent many hours and many Tuesdays volunteering at a wonderful zoo. I worked in the kitchen, helping to prepare food for the animals. This zoo is part of the AZA (Association of Zoos and Aquariums). Many animals here are part of a special program. The goal of this program is to protect animal species (物种) that are at risk or in danger of disappearing. The zoo has breeding plans to help these animals survive.
I quickly learned that it’s easy to love all the animals. I especially liked one animal right away — the zoo’s prehensile-tailed porcupine (卷尾豪猪) named Fin. You might have seen YouTube videos of these animals eating and making cute noises. I learned that Fin really loves bananas and likes to peel them himself. One of my favorite things about Fin is his little nose, which looks like a pig’s nose.
I also learned that nothing gets done without teamwork from the animal keepers. Taking care of all the zoo animals requires a lot of work. The keepers know a lot about every animal in the zoo. They work very hard, day and night, to keep the animals safe and healthy. Even in winter, the keepers stay at the zoo to make sure all the animals are happy and fed.
Zoos are important. They teach visitors why we need to protect these animals and their homes. Most zoos care deeply for their animals and work very hard to keep them happy and healthy.
13. What do we know about the AZA program
A. It feeds animals with natural foods.
B. It searches for uncommon animals.
C. It saves species from dying out.
D. It provides wild areas for animals.
14. What is one of the author’s favorite things about Fin
A. Fin’s love for bananas.
B. Fin’s nose similar to a pig’s.
C. Fin’s appearance in YouTube videos.
D. Fin’s cute eating noises.
15. What does the author imply about zookeepers
A. They have medical backgrounds.
B. They train animals for exercises.
C. They become animals’ friends.
D. They value animals’ emotions.
16. What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A. Zoos are not animal cages.
B. Zoos should be free to all.
C. Zoos are not as good as nature.
D. Zoos should be under control.

As one of the fashions in education in recent memory, you’ve certainly heard of the flipped classroom (翻转课堂). It is a type of blended learning where students are introduced to knowledge at home and practice using it at school. This is the opposite of the more common practice of introducing new content at school, then giving homework and projects to completed by the students independently at home.
In this blended learning model, face-to-face communication is mixed with independent study — usually through videos and e-dictionaries. In a common flipped classroom setting, students might watch pre-recorded videos at home, then come to school to do the homework armed with questions and at least some background knowledge.
The idea behind the flipped classroom is to rethink when students can use the resources they need most. If the problem is that students need help with the work rather than being introduced to the new thinking behind the work, then the solution the flipped classroom takes is to reverse the traditional teaching method.
In a flipped classroom, students watch online lectures (线上讲座), review online course materials, read physical or digital texts, and take part in an online discussion at home. What happens at school includes skill practice, in-person or face-to-face discussions with classmates, presentations, experiments, peer (同行) review, and so on. It allows students to stop, look up words online, and rewatch, creating a ready-made library for student review.
Of course, it’s not that simple. There are some disadvantages of a flipped classroom. Just like in a regular classroom, success depends greatly on the quality of teachers, the clarity of conversations, and the quality of given courses, tests, and instructions. Further, fairness is still a major issue, and it doesn’t fix the outdated method most educational systems take to courses.
17. What does the flipped classroom feature
A. More dependence on hobbies.
B. Technology-assisted learning.
C. Parent-child cooperation.
D. Less focus on textbooks.
18. What does the underlined word “reverse” mean in paragraph 3
A. Research. B. Examine. C. Change. D. Shape.
19. What is the advantage of the flipped classroom
A. It gives personalized experiences.
B. It develops creativity in students.
C. It builds trust among peers.
D. It simplifies learning steps.
20. Why is the flipped classroom criticized
A. It fails to change teachers’ thinking.
B. It hardly improves students’ grades.
C. It causes unclear dialogues.
D. It only touches the surface.
