Unit 4 My Favourite Subject Section B 1a-1d 教学设计
This part of the teaching material mainly consists of a message board with posts from two students, Mike from Canada and Wu Binbin from China. They share information about the school subjects they study, their favourite subjects, and the reasons behind their preferences. Through reading these posts, students are exposed to real - life scenarios of students from different cultural backgrounds talking about their academic experiences. It also includes vocabulary related to school life, such as "AM", "PM", "Canada", "French", "excellent", "instrument", "singer", "future", "term", "work out", "problem", "in class", "magic", "life", "scientist", etc. The content aims to not only enhance students' reading comprehension skills but also expand their vocabulary and understanding of different cultures in the context of education.
教学目标 Students should be able to master the new vocabulary related to school subjects, countries, and descriptions as mentioned above. They can correctly pronounce, spell, and use these words in sentences. For example, they can say "I hope to be a scientist in the future." Enable students to understand and use the sentence patterns for expressing preferences and reasons, like "My favourite subject is... because...". They can apply these patterns to talk about their own and others' favourite subjects, such as "My favourite subject is music because it can make me relax." Improve students' reading comprehension skills. They can extract key information from the message board posts, such as the subjects each student has, their favourite subjects, and the reasons for their choices.
教学重难点 Ensure students firmly grasp the new vocabulary related to this section. Teachers can use various methods such as word - card games, picture - word matching, and vocabulary - building exercises to help students remember. For example, show pictures of musical instruments when teaching the word "instrument". Make sure students can use the sentence pattern "My favourite subject is... because..." fluently. Provide plenty of examples and practice opportunities, like asking students to make sentences about their real - life experiences. Guide students to master basic reading skills. In the process of reading the message board posts, teachers can lead students to first skim the text to get a general understanding, and then scan for specific information. Design relevant reading tasks, such as asking students to underline all the subjects mentioned in the posts, which helps them practice these reading skills.

Search for specific details in the text. For example, when looking for the reason why Wu Binbin likes maths, students use scanning skills to find the relevant sentences in the post.
教学过程
I. Lead - in (5 minutes)
Warming - up Activity
Greet the students cheerfully and start with a simple review. Ask them to quickly recall and name some school subjects they learned in Section A, like "math", "science", and "English". This not only warms up their memory but also smoothly leads to the new topic. Then, show a colorful picture of a school timetable and randomly point to different time slots, asking students to guess what subject might be on at that time. This activity helps to engage students and make them actively think about school subjects.
Question - raising
Pose an interesting question: "We all have our own favorite subjects, but do you know what subjects students from other countries like And why do they like them " This question piques students' curiosity and sets the stage for the learning content of this section, which involves two students from different cultural backgrounds sharing their favorite subjects.
II. Pre - reading (5 minutes)
Vocabulary Introduction
Present the new vocabulary related to this section on the PPT, such as "AM", "PM", "French", "excellent", "instrument", "singer", "future", "term", "problem", "magic", "life", "scientist". Pronounce each word clearly and ask students to repeat after you several times. Then, briefly explain the meaning of each word. For example, when introducing "instrument", show pictures of different musical instruments like a piano, guitar, and violin to help students better understand.
Prediction Activity
Show the students the pictures and names of Mike from Canada and Wu Binbin from China on the message board. Let students work in pairs to make predictions. Ask them to discuss and guess which country the two students are from (this can be an easy check as their names and the context might give some hints), and what subjects they might like. Encourage them to share their reasons for the predictions. This activity helps students activate their prior knowledge and get ready for the reading content.
III. While - reading (15 minutes)
Skimming for General Ideas
Ask students to quickly skim the two message board posts. Set a time limit, say 1 minute. While they are skimming, ask them to find out the following information: Who are the two students writing the posts Where are they from And what is the main topic of their posts (which is about their favorite school subjects). After that, invite some students to share the answers they got from skimming.
Scanning for Specific Details
Task 1: Identifying Subjects
Instruct students to read the posts more carefully this time and underline all the school subjects each student has. Then, make a simple comparison. Ask questions like "What subjects do both Mike and Wu Binbin have " and let students find the answers through scanning. This helps students practice scanning for specific information.
Task 2: Favourite Subjects and Reasons
Divide the students into two groups. One group focuses on Mike's post, and the other on Wu Binbin's. Ask them to read their assigned post carefully and fill in a table with the following columns: "Favourite Subject", "Reasons (from the class, the teacher, personal feelings, future plans)". For example, for Mike, the "Favourite Subject" is "music", and the reasons could be "The class is fun and he learns a lot of new songs" (from the class), "His music teacher is excellent" (the teacher), "Music always makes him happy" (personal feelings), "He wants to be a singer in the future" (future plans). After they finish filling in the table, ask each group to share their results with the whole class.
IV. Post - reading (7 minutes)
Group Discussion
Organize students into small groups of 4 - 5. Pose a discussion topic: "If you could exchange places with either Mike or Wu Binbin for a day, which one would you choose and why Consider the subjects they study and their reasons for liking their favorite subjects." Let each group member share their opinions and reasons. Walk around the classroom to monitor the discussions and offer help or guidance if needed. After a few minutes, ask some groups to report their discussion results to the class.
Summary and Expansion
Briefly summarize the key points of the two posts, such as the different subjects the two students study, the reasons for their favorite subjects, and the cultural differences reflected in the courses (for example, Mike has French class which is related to the cultural background of Canada). Then, expand a bit by asking students if they know any other interesting subjects that students in other countries might have. Encourage them to share their ideas.
V. Homework Assignment (3 minutes)
Homework Explanation
Assign the following homework to the students: "Write a short passage about your own favorite subject. You need to include at least three reasons, just like Mike and Wu Binbin did in their posts. Also, you can imagine if you were to study in a foreign country, what new subjects you might want to learn and why." Explain the requirements clearly to ensure students understand what they need to do.
Encouragement
Encourage students to be creative and use the vocabulary and sentence patterns they learned in this class. Tell them that this homework is not only to practice their writing skills but also to let them think more deeply about their own learning experiences.
