Unit 4 My Favourite Subject Section B 2a-2b 教学设计
This part of the teaching material in Unit 4 of Grade 7 English Volume I (PEP 2024) for the 2025 - 2026 academic year, Section B 2a - 2b, is centered around the theme of school subjects. It consists of a reading text and related exercises. The reading text usually presents different students' opinions on their favorite subjects, along with the reasons behind their preferences. For example, it might introduce students from various cultural backgrounds, such as Mike from Canada and Wu Binbin from China, sharing details about their school curriculums, like the subjects they study in the morning (AM) and afternoon (PM), and which ones stand out as their favorites. The text also includes new vocabulary relevant to school life, such as "French", "excellent", "instrument", "singer", "future", "term", "problem", "magic", "life", "scientist", etc. The content aims to enhance students' reading comprehension skills, vocabulary acquisition, and their ability to express and understand preferences and reasons in the context of school subjects.
教学目标 Students should be able to understand, pronounce, spell, and use the new vocabulary words related to school subjects, descriptions, and future aspirations. For instance, they can use words like "scientist" in a sentence such as "I want to be a scientist in the future because I like science." Master the usage of phrases and expressions that frequently appear in the text, like "let sb. do sth." and "feel like". They can create sentences like "My teacher lets us play all kinds of interesting instruments in music class."
教学重难点 Ensure students firmly master the new vocabulary and phrases introduced in this section. Teachers can use various teaching methods, such as word - card games, picture - word matching, and vocabulary - building exercises. For example, when teaching the word "instrument", show pictures of different musical instruments like a piano, guitar, and violin to help students better understand and remember. Guide students to use these new words and phrases correctly in sentences. Provide plenty of examples and practice opportunities, such as asking students to make sentences using "feel like" or "in the future". Focus on training students' basic reading skills, including skimming, scanning, and inferring. Design relevant reading tasks, such as asking students to skim the text to find the main idea, scan for specific details like the favorite subjects of different students, and infer the meaning of new words from context.
A. Vocabulary
Subject - related Vocabulary
"maths" (British English for "math"), "music", "French", "history", "English", "IT" (Information Technology), "science", "gym" (short for "gymnastics"), "Chinese", "PE" (Physical Education). These are common school subjects that students encounter in their studies.
Descriptive and Other Vocabulary
"AM" (ante meridiem, indicating the time period before noon), "PM" (post meridiem, referring to the time period after noon), "Canada" (the name of a country), "excellent" (meaning of high quality or very good), "instrument" (tools used in music, such as piano, guitar, etc.), "singer" (a person who sings), "future" (the time yet to come), "term" (a period of time in a school year), "work out" (solve, like work out a maths problem), "problem" (a question or situation that needs to be resolved), "in class" (during the class time), "magic" (something that seems mysterious and amazing), "life" (the state of being alive), "scientist" (a person who studies science).
B. Sentence Patterns
Expressing Favourite Subjects and Reasons
"My favourite subject is... because...". For example, "My favourite subject is science because it's full of interesting experiments and discoveries."
"I like all the subjects, but my favourite is...". Such as "I like all the subjects, but my favourite is English because my English teacher is very kind and makes the class lively."
Expressing Future Aspirations Related to Subjects
"I want to be... in the future." For instance, "I want to be a singer in the future because I really enjoy music and performing."
"I hope to study... in the future because...". Example: "I hope to study French in the future because I'm interested in French culture and want to be able to communicate with French - speaking people."
C. Reading Comprehension Knowledge
Skimming Skills
Quickly look through the text to get the main idea. When skimming the passage about students' favorite subjects, students should be able to identify the overall topic, such as that different students have different favorite subjects and reasons for their choices.
Scanning Skills
Search for specific details in the text. For example, when looking for the reason why a particular student likes a certain subject, students use scanning skills to find the relevant sentences in the text.
Inferring from Context
Figure out the meaning of unfamiliar words or phrases based on the surrounding text. If the text says "He is good at working out complex problems in maths class", students can infer that "working out" means "solving" from the context of a maths class.
教学过程
I. Lead - in (5 minutes)
Warming - up Activity
Greet the students with enthusiasm. Start by quickly reviewing some school subject vocabulary. Write several subject - related words on the blackboard, such as "math", "science", "English", "music", etc. Then, play a quick - response game. Point to a word and ask students to quickly say a sentence related to that subject, like "I like English because I can read interesting stories." This activity warms up students' memory of subject - related knowledge and gets them actively involved in the class.
Question - raising
Pose an engaging question: "We all have our own ideas about school subjects. But do you know how students from other places feel about their subjects Today, we will meet two students from different countries and learn about their favourite subjects and reasons." This question piques students' curiosity and smoothly leads to the reading content of this section.
II. Pre - reading (5 minutes)
Vocabulary Introduction
Present the new vocabulary words relevant to this section on the PPT. Words like "AM", "PM", "French", "excellent", "instrument", "singer", "future", "term", "problem", "magic", "life", "scientist" are shown one by one. Pronounce each word clearly, and ask students to repeat after you multiple times. Explain the meaning of each word simply and vividly. For example, when introducing "instrument", show pictures of various musical instruments like a piano, guitar, and drums to help students better understand and remember.
Prediction Activity
Display the pictures and names of the two students, Mike from Canada and Wu Binbin from China, who will be mentioned in the reading text. Organize students to work in pairs. Ask them to predict what subjects these two students might like based on their countries and personal interests. Encourage them to share their predictions with reasons. For instance, some students might predict that Mike likes music because Canada has a rich music culture, and Wu Binbin likes math as Chinese students are often good at logical thinking. This activity activates students' prior knowledge and prepares them for the reading.
III. While - reading (15 minutes)
Skimming for General Ideas
Instruct students to quickly skim the two passages about Mike and Wu Binbin. Set a time limit, say 1 minute. During this time, they need to find out the following key information: Who are the two students Where are they from What is the main topic of their sharing After skimming, invite several students to share the information they got. This helps students get a general understanding of the text.
Scanning for Specific Details
Task 1: Identifying Subjects
Ask students to read the passages more carefully this time. Their task is to underline all the school subjects each student has. Then, conduct a simple comparison. Pose questions like "What subjects do both Mike and Wu Binbin have " Let students find the answers through scanning. This task trains students' ability to search for specific information in the text.
Task 2: Favourite Subjects and Reasons
Divide the class into two groups. One group focuses on Mike's passage, and the other on Wu Binbin's. Each group is required to read their assigned passage carefully and fill in a table with columns: "Favourite Subject", "Reasons (from the class, the teacher, personal feelings, future plans)". For example, for Mike, his "Favourite Subject" is "music", and the reasons could be "The class is fun, and I learn many new songs" (from the class), "My music teacher is excellent" (the teacher), "Music always makes me happy" (personal feelings), "I want to be a singer in the future" (future plans). After filling in the table, each group shares their results with the whole class. This activity deepens students' understanding of the text and their ability to analyze and summarize information.
IV. Post - reading (7 minutes)
Group Discussion
Organize students into small groups of 4 - 5. Present a discussion topic: "If you could choose to study with either Mike or Wu Binbin for a day, which one would you choose and why Consider the subjects they study, their reasons for liking them, and the possible learning experiences." Each group member takes turns to share their opinions and reasons. Walk around the classroom to monitor the discussions, offer guidance, and encourage students to express their ideas clearly. After a few minutes, ask some groups to report their discussion results to the class. This activity promotes students' communication skills and their in - depth thinking about the content.
Summary and Expansion
Briefly summarize the key points of the two passages, such as the different subjects the two students study, the reasons for their favourite subjects, and the cultural differences reflected in the courses (e.g., Mike has French class related to Canada's cultural background). Then, expand the discussion by asking students if they know any other unique school subjects in other countries. Encourage them to share their knowledge and ideas, which broadens students' horizons.
V. Homework Assignment (3 minutes)
Homework Explanation
Assign the following homework: "Write a short passage about your own favourite subject. You should include at least three reasons, similar to what Mike and Wu Binbin did in their posts. Also, imagine if you could add a new subject to your school curriculum, what would it be and why " Explain the requirements clearly, ensuring students understand the task.
Encouragement
Encourage students to be creative and make full use of the vocabulary and sentence patterns learned in this class. Emphasize that this homework not only helps them practice writing skills but also enables them to think more deeply about their own learning experiences.
