Reading books brings with it numerous benefits. Reading gives people the opportunity to explore new worlds and meet new people both real and imagined. It also expands our knowledge and understanding of the world around us and those far away.
To celebrate the wonderment of books and writers, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) established 23 April as World Book and Copyright Day in 1995. However, it got its start long before that in Spain.
Setting aside a day to celebrate books goes back to Spanish writer Vicente Clavel Andrés. In 1922 he proposed the idea as a way to honor fellow countryman author Miguel de Cervantes. Four years later the first celebration took place on 7 October, Cervantes' birthday, but was moved to 23 April, the date of his death, in 1930.
In 1995, the UNESCO General Conference decided to pay homage (敬意) to authors and books world wide as a way of encouraging everyone to access books. Choosing 23 April seemed a logical choice, besides being the date of Cervantes' death, it also happens to be the date William Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega died. Additionally, several distinguished authors were born on 23 April, making it a symbolic date in the world literature.
Annually since 2001, one city around the world is chosen to be the UNESCO World Book Capital for a year. The selected city is responsible for carrying out activities within this year to encourage “a culture of reading and spread its values in all ages and population groups in and out of the national borders.”
The idea was put forward by Spain in 2001, and Madrid was chosen to be the first capital, followed by Alexandria and then New Delhi. Those cities are chosen each year by the Director General of UNESCO and an advisory committee made up of representatives from international organizations representing authors, libraries and publishers. UNESCO has named Strasbourg as the 2024 World Book Capital.

More than 100 horses and riders leaped the flames of roaring bonfires on Thursday in a small Spanish town in a centuries old festival that has raised the anger of animal rights activists.
Smoke and flames filled the night in San Bartolome de Pinares, a central Spanish town of some 600 inhabitants, in the annual festival held on Thursday, the eve of Saint Anthony's Day for the patron saint (守护神) of animals. One by one, horses and their riders jumped the flames in the narrow, paved streets of the town.
“No one knows how old the tradition is. My grandfather told me that his great grandfather took part，” said 34 year old Die go Martin. “They say it could be 300 or 400 years old.”
The town is fiercely attached to the festival, despite opposition from animal rights groups concerned about the safety of the horses. Just a few days earlier, Spain's National Association for the Welfare of Animals asked the town's people not to let their horses leap over the fires, apparently in vain.
“There was an illness that killed all the horses in the town. Since then, we have done this to purify them to keep away any evil by asking for the protection of the saint，” explained 20 year old Libertad Gomez, who has been taking part for seven years. “More than a tradition, for us it is a feeling. It is something you like almost since you were born，” said Libertad, who rode with dozens of others through the streets.
Indeed, the smoke is so thick that it affects the horse and rider as they leap the fires. That does not stop youngsters from taking part in the tradition, such as 10 year old Alejandro Nunez, who jumped for the second year running on a white horse. “I really like it. At first, it was a bit scary but that goes，” he said, equipped with a helmet and a checkered scarf to protect him from the smoke.

The old Chinese saying “as happy as spending the New Year” might be outdated now in the busy modern world. The Spring Festival is regarded as the most important festival for Chinese people and an occasion for all family members to get together, like Christmas in the West. But many traditional customs accompanying the Spring Festival, however, have weakened in practice.
Setting off fireworks was once the most typical custom of the Spring Festival. People thought the sputtering (爆裂) sound could help drive away evil spirits. However, the activity has been completely or partially forbidden in big cities for years as the government has taken safety, noise and pollution factors into consideration.
“In recent years, some cities have begun to allow people to light fireworks during limited hours at the Spring Festival, surrendering__to public demand. Respecting folk traditions is a gesture of respect toward public opinion，” said Zhou Xing, a folklore (民俗) researcher.
“As people gain more income and it becomes easier to buy daily goods, the New Year holiday is just like any other. After long workdays, many people use the New Year holiday to take a rest, rather than visiting friends and neighbors. The process of making and enjoying the family dinner on Spring Festival Eve is the most important thing. However, many families would like to eat out to save time and energy，” said Li Shunzhi, a resident of Harbin, Heilongjiang.
“I enjoy the holidays very much in the countryside. My family has been preparing for the Spring Festival more than two weeks before the holiday, cleaning the house, buying holiday goods and decorating the house with paper cuttings. On New Year's Eve, the whole family stays up to see the New Year in, and in the days to follow, a series of activities such as lion dancing, dragon lantern dancing, lantern festivals and temple fairs will be held. A Christmas Tree for Mrs Mueller
The black and white photograph of Mrs Mueller that I took pictured her seated on the sofa in our living room, smiling shyly. Mrs Mueller was our next－door neighbor when my sister and I were growing up.
We got to know her after her husband died. She didn't have children of her own and no relatives that we knew of. She was gentle and kind, and Laurel and I considered her our special friend.

I was in Miss O'Keefe's sixth grade class that year, and we had decorated a small tree with paper link chains and ornaments (装饰品) we'd made in art class. It was beautiful. Best of all, it had to be removed from the classroom before Christmas vacation.

To celebrate the wonderment of books and writers, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) established 23 April as World Book and Copyright Day in 1995. However, it got its start long before that in Spain.
Setting aside a day to celebrate books goes back to Spanish writer Vicente Clavel Andrés. In 1922 he proposed the idea as a way to honor fellow countryman author Miguel de Cervantes. Four years later the first celebration took place on 7 October, Cervantes' birthday, but was moved to 23 April, the date of his death, in 1930.
In 1995, the UNESCO General Conference decided to pay homage (敬意) to authors and books world wide as a way of encouraging everyone to access books. Choosing 23 April seemed a logical choice, besides being the date of Cervantes' death, it also happens to be the date William Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega died. Additionally, several distinguished authors were born on 23 April, making it a symbolic date in the world literature.
Annually since 2001, one city around the world is chosen to be the UNESCO World Book Capital for a year. The selected city is responsible for carrying out activities within this year to encourage “a culture of reading and spread its values in all ages and population groups in and out of the national borders.”
The idea was put forward by Spain in 2001, and Madrid was chosen to be the first capital, followed by Alexandria and then New Delhi. Those cities are chosen each year by the Director General of UNESCO and an advisory committee made up of representatives from international organizations representing authors, libraries and publishers. UNESCO has named Strasbourg as the 2024 World Book Capital.

One by one, horses and their riders jumped the flames in the narrow, paved streets of the town.
“No one knows how old the tradition is. My grandfather told me that his great grandfather took part，” said 34 year old Die go Martin. “They say it could be 300 or 400 years old.”
The town is fiercely attached to the festival, despite opposition from animal rights groups concerned about the safety of the horses. Just a few days earlier, Spain's National Association for the Welfare of Animals asked the town's people not to let their horses leap over the fires, apparently in vain.
“There was an illness that killed all the horses in the town. Since then, we have done this to purify them to keep away any evil by asking for the protection of the saint，” explained 20 year old Libertad Gomez, who has been taking part for seven years. “More than a tradition, for us it is a feeling. It is something you like almost since you were born，” said Libertad, who rode with dozens of others through the streets.
Indeed, the smoke is so thick that it affects the horse and rider as they leap the fires. That does not stop youngsters from taking part in the tradition, such as 10 year old Alejandro Nunez, who jumped for the second year running on a white horse. “I really like it. Now, I want to tell you about a fantastic new exhibition at the Science Museum. It's called “A Changing World” and is all about global warming.
The first thing you'll notice when you walk in is hundreds of pairs of Wellington boots. Everyone needs to put on a pair of these because the whole exhibition area is flooded with water. The idea is to show what will happen if sea levels continue to rise. It really makes you think!

Reading books brings with it numerous benefits. Reading gives people the opportunity to explore new worlds and meet new people both real and imagined. It also expands our knowledge and understanding of the world around us and those far away.
To celebrate the wonderment of books and writers, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) established 23 April as World Book and Copyright Day in 1995. However, it got its start long before that in Spain.
Setting aside a day to celebrate books goes back to Spanish writer Vicente Clavel Andrés. In 1922 he proposed the idea as a way to honor fellow countryman author Miguel de Cervantes. Four years later the first celebration took place on 7 October, Cervantes' birthday, but was moved to 23 April, the date of his death, in 1930.
In 1995, the UNESCO General Conference decided to pay homage (敬意) to authors and books world wide as a way of encouraging everyone to access books. Choosing 23 April seemed a logical choice, besides being the date of Cervantes' death, it also happens to be the date William Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega died. Additionally, several distinguished authors were born on 23 April, making it a symbolic date in the world literature.
Annually since 2001, one city around the world is chosen to be the UNESCO World Book Capital for a year. The selected city is responsible for carrying out activities within this year to encourage “a culture of reading and spread its values in all ages and population groups in and out of the national borders.”

The town is fiercely attached to the festival, despite opposition from animal rights groups concerned about the safety of the horses. Just a few days earlier, Spain's National Association for the Welfare of Animals asked the town's people not to let their horses leap over the fires, apparently in vain.
“There was an illness that killed all the horses in the town. Since then, we have done this to purify them to keep away any evil by asking for the protection of the saint，” explained 20 year old Libertad Gomez, who has been taking part for seven years. “More than a tradition, for us it is a feeling. It is something you like almost since you were born，” said Libertad, who rode with dozens of others through the streets.
Indeed, the smoke is so thick that it affects the horse and rider as they leap the fires. A Christmas Tree for Mrs Mueller
The black and white photograph of Mrs Mueller that I took pictured her seated on the sofa in our living room, smiling shyly. Mrs Mueller was our next－door neighbor when my sister and I were growing up.
We got to know her after her husband died. She didn't have children of her own and no relatives that we knew of. She was gentle and kind, and Laurel and I considered her our special friend.
