VOLUNTEERING IN THE BUSH
8 March
I just got a parcel from home! It took about two weeks to arrive, and it was a bit damaged, but it was so nice to get some sweets and jam from home; I've been dying to have some of my favourite sweets, and it1's always nice to get mail! 1 it是形式主语,不定式(短语) to arrive, to get some sweets and jam from home和to get mail是真正的主语
So I've been here in the jungle for about a month now. My secondary school is a bush school. The classrooms are made of bamboo, with clay floors and roofs of grass. It takes me only a few minutes to walk to school down a dusty track covered in weeds2. When I reach the school grounds, I'm greeted by a chorus of “good morning” from the boys. Unlike students in our country, these boys do not wear cotton uniforms, and3 many of them also have to walk a long way, sometimes for up to two hours, just to get to school4.
There's no electricity, running water or even textbooks, not to mention laptops, tablets, or other modern devices! All the students have are pencils, rubbers, and paper. I'm still trying to adapt to these conditions. I've had to become much more imaginative in my teaching. Science is my most challenging subject as5 my students have no concept of doing experiments. There is no equipment, and6 since7 there isn't even a washroom, if8 I need water I have to carry it from my house in a basin! It's important not to be too rigid about rules here, too. The other day I was showing the boys a chemistry experiment when9, before10 I knew it, the mixture was bubbling out of the test tube spilling everywhere11! The class became a circus as12 the boys, who13 had never come across anything like this before, started jumping out of the windows. Sometimes I wonder how relevant chemistry is to these students—few will ever become chemists—and most will be going back to their villages after Year 8 anyway. To be honest, I doubt whether I'm making any difference to these boys' lives at all.
Last weekend I made my first visit to a remote village, home to one of our students, Tombe. Another teacher and I walked for two and a half hours to get there—first, up a mountain from where14 we had fantastic views, and15 then down a shaded path to the valley below. When16 we arrived at the village, Tombe's mother, Kiak, saw us coming17 and started crying “ieee ieee”. We shook hands with all the villagers. Everyone seemed to be related to Tombe. 14“介词+where”引导定语从句,修饰先行词mountain 15连接两个并列成分up a mountain ...
Tombe's father, Mukap, a man with a strong jaw and a wrinkled forehead18, led us to his house,a low, round bamboo hut with no windows, with a door just big enough to get through, and with19 grass sticking out of the roof20—this shows it is a man's house. Such housing is dark inside so21 it took time for our eyes to adjust. Fresh grass had been laid on the floor and22 there was a platform for Jenny and me to sleep on. There was a fireplace in the centre of the hut. The only possessions I could see23 were one broom, a few saucers, a kettle, cups, pans, and a couple of jars. 18 Mukap是Tombe's father的同位语,而a man ... forehead是Mukap的同位语 19三个with短语作后置定语,修饰名词hut 20 big enough to get through和sticking out of the roof作宾语补足语 21连接两个并列分句,后一个并列分句表示结果 22连接两个并列分句 23定语从句,修饰先行词possessions
Mukap built a fire outside and laid stones on it to heat. He then placed the hot stones in an empty oil drum with kau kau (sweet potato), ripe corn, and greens. He then covered the vegetables with banana leaves and left them to steam. It smelled delicious. We ate inside the hut sitting round the fire24. I loved listening to the family25 talking softly to each other26 in their language, even though27 I could not participate much in the conversation. Luckily, Tombe interpreted for us.
Later, I noticed a can standing upside down28 on the grill over the fire. After a while, Tombe threw it out of the doorway. Tombe told me that29 the can was heated to dry out the leftover food30. His family believes that31 leftovers attract bad spirits in the night, so32 any leftover food is dried up in a can and33 the can is then thrown out of the hut.
We left the village the next morning after many goodbyes and firm handshakes. My muscles were aching and34 my knees shaking as35 we dragged ourselves down the mountain towards home. That evening I fell happily into bed. It36 was such a privilege to have spent a day with Tombe's family. 34连接两个并列分句:My muscles were aching和my knees (were) shaking 35引导时间状语从句 36 It为形式主语,真正的主语是动词不定式短语to have spent a day with Tombe's family

(2024·福建省莆田市高二下期末)Fifteen year old Sansa has been writing for eight years and has been working on a book for the past four years. Feeling stuck and unable to write, she started searching for writing groups in Los Angeles, looking for guidance. When she found WriteGirl, she was inspired.
Keren Taylor started WriteGirl in 2001 as a way to help teen girls who did not have access to creative writing programs. “Teen girls are incredibly vulnerable (脆弱的) and invisible,” Taylor said. “They really need to be lifted up and inspired.”
At WriteGirl, 400 women writers volunteer to mentor (指导) 700 teenagers a year. Every girl who has gone through the mentorship program has gone to college and several have pursued careers as professional writers. Through the program, girls dive into poetry, fiction, songwriting, play and so on, learning techniques from professional women writers. This leads to well rounded training and sets WriteGirl apart from other organizations.
A typical exercise at WriteGirl is mic and rant, a 30 second session before writing for each girl. As a means for teens to get their ideas out, it enables girls to explore anything meaningful to them. “Not the flowery language, or rather, complicated expressions that sound skillful, but more of the natural, this is what I'm thinking and what I'm feeling,” Taylor said.
Sansa's mentor Danyella Wilder is attracted by the long term nature of mentoring at WriteGirl. “If only I could join in such a program when I was 15! An organization where people spend their time just to tell you, ‘Hey, good job.’ or ‘That was amazing.’ You're at the age where you need to hear that.”

(2024·湖南省衡阳市未阳市正源学校高二下期末)In a scenic community, a man known as Uncle Green has redefined the concept of waste. As a yam bean farmer, Uncle Green held a deep respect for education, coming from his own unfulfilled academic eagerness. Noticing a lack of enthusiasm for reading among the youth, he was determined to make a difference.
In 1997, he established a scholarship program initially funded by the local community, including contributions from other patrons. However, Uncle Green realized the need for a sustainable approach to support both education and the environment.
His innovative solution emerged in 2002 when he launched a scholarship fund fueled by the community's recycling efforts. This initiative not only provided financial aid to students but also actively engaged the community in a collective environmental and educational effort. The program grew rapidly, transforming recyclables into educational scholarships and promoting a culture of sustainability.
Today, the community awards scholarships annually during the Mid Autumn Festival, benefiting students from a wide range of educational backgrounds. The initiative has recycled 60 tons of materials each year, fostering a spirit of volunteerism and responsibility.
Success stories, such as that of a doctoral student in electrical engineering and a student attending a famous university, are a testament to the program's impact. These students have not only achieved academically but also expressed a desire to contribute to their community.
Over two decades since its foundation, Uncle Green's vision continues to inspire. The Community Development Association upholds his legacy by awarding scholarships to an increasing number of students. The collective effort has cultivated a love for reading and a commitment to sustainable living among the youth.

The eight year old gets off her bike and sits at the back. She doesn't mind listening to the same stories from Noman because he is so funny.

So far about 15,000 children have attended over 700 storytelling sessions. The parents are very happy to see how their children have developed a love for reading since the project began. And Sayeed, director of the program, is convinced that purposeful storytelling builds a child's character and brings out the qualities for success in life.

The Jourdain family—Lydia, 44, husband Ben, 51, their daughters Isla, 14, and Alyssa, 11—began writing postcards in September to cheer patients up.
It started as a way for Isla to fulfill the volunteering requirements for her Duke of Edinburgh Silver Award but grew into an activity for the whole family. Mrs Jourdain and her husband have lost friends and family to cancer, which played a key role in them wanting to partake in the project. “Now every Sunday evening, I say ‘postcards, people’ and we all sit down around the kitchen table and write together. We thought it would be a nice way to boost the patients' spirits,” Mrs Jourdain said.
She thought it was nice because they had got such a range of ages between them, so it was quite a variety of things that they wrote about or if they were all writing about the same thing, it was done in different ways.
Sometimes we may write about something that we have attended. For example, last weekend, Isla went to see the Royal Shakespeare Company's performance of A Midsummer Night's Dream and she wrote about that. Sometimes it's more about the gardening and the weather and we may comment on the art or people on the postcard we are writing on.
The postcards are given to the charity From Me to You as part of its “donate a letter” scheme, which sees them read by the charity, filtered, repackaged and delivered to hospitals, cancer centres or individuals at home.
Mrs Jourdain said she hopes to “inspire” others to take part. “It's so simple, but can have such an impact and I just think we need to reignite the love of a letter,” she said. “Something handwritten is so lovely and personal and cannot be replicated (复制) in an email or text.”

根据第二段中的“Mrs Jourdain and her husband ... way to boost the patients' spirits”可知,Jourdain一家参与这项活动的主要原因是希望振奋遭受疾病困扰的人们的精神。故选D。

A.They are sent to patients after a process.
B.They are attached to volunteers' donations.
C.They are mainly about art in different ways.
D.The content focuses on the patients' daily life.

(2024·广东省惠州市光正实验学校高二下期末)Throughout the course of our existence, there exists an abundance of blessings that we ought to be grateful for, yet many individuals, myself included, often fail to recognize and appreciate them.
During the formative years of my life, I aspired to imitate the virtues of my mother. She was a paragon of kindness and compassion, possessing an ability to put others at ease. For an extended period, she dedicated her time and efforts as a volunteer within our community. I enjoyed accompanying her to the local nursing home, assisting her in her charitable endeavors, until my teenage years, when I became so concentrated on my own life that I neglected to extend a helping hand to others.
On a particular summer day during my twelfth year, my mother entered my room and instructed me to rise and join her at the vehicle. I had envisioned spending the day by the lake in the company of friends. Why, I wondered, did she have to disrupt my plans Reluctantly, I made my way outdoors, envisioning the refreshing lake water against my skin. Consumed by frustration, I climbed into the car, slamming the door shut behind me, and sat in silence, too disheartened to engage in conversation.
“Tasha, would you be interested in knowing our destination?” my mother inquired, her voice serene and composed.
“I suppose so,” I muttered quietly, barely audible.
“Darling, we are heading to a shelter for children,” she said. “I have visited this place previously, and I believe it would be beneficial for you to experience.”
My irritation intensified. How could I possibly be of assistance in such a setting
Upon our arrival at the shelter, I was taken aback by its appearance. It was a grand, white Victorian style residence. As we approached the expansive front porch, the melodious sound of wind chimes filled the air, while the surrounding trees and flowers greeted us with a sense of tranquility. It seemed that perhaps this experience might not be as dreadful as I had initially anticipated. My mother rang the doorbell, and as the door opened, we were led into the front room where all the children were engaged in play. Toys were scattered across the floor. My gaze fell upon a baby with visible injuries on his body. The majority of the children bore evident physical marks such as lacerations, abrasions, and burns. The realization of the hardships they had endured prior to finding refuge in this place weighed heavily on my heart.

As I was looking around, I felt a gentle pull on my shirt. Turning around, I saw a young girl with a timid smile, clutching a worn out teddy bear. “Would you play with me?” she asked, her eyes filled with hope. I was taken aback by her request but realized this was an opportunity to connect and provide comfort. We spent the afternoon playing games and sharing stories, her laughter echoing through the halls, a sharp contrast to the sad atmosphere I had initially perceived.
I returned to the shelter with Mom several times. Each visit deepened my understanding of the resilience and strength of these children. They faced adversities that were unimaginable, yet their spirits remained unbroken. Volunteering at the shelter taught me the importance of empathy and compassion. It was a transformative experience that shaped my character and instilled in me a sense of responsibility towards those less fortunate. I learned to appreciate the blessings in my life and the power of giving back to the community.

(2024·黑龙江省大庆市萨尔图区大庆实验中学高二下期末)A charity club, funded entirely by a man, was established in Chengdu in the early 2000s. It first served as a “home away from home” for rural students attending a sports school in neighboring Aba Tibetan Qiang Autonomous Prefecture.
The club provided free meals and accommodation as well as training facilities. Gradually, it became known as a Wushu school for children from rural areas and began to attract a steady flow of students, especially from underdeveloped areas in Sichuan.
Some children had already dropped out of school before joining the club, the funder revealed to media in 2017. As these students could not be officially registered as residents of Chengdu, they were not qualified to attend public schools there. Consequently, he employed four teachers to teach academic subjects in the students' spare time such as on nights and weekends.
A boy, born in Aba in 1999, joined the club in 2009. Before that, he was in third grade at a local elementary school. His father passed away before he was born, and the family had been struggling economically ever since. He heard about the club from his headmaster and decided to go there.
Starting from scratch, the boy spent two years getting ready to represent the club in Sanda competitions. In 2015, the club introduced MMA (综合格斗) and he switched from Wushu Sanda to MMA in 2015 and won his first match at a competition run by Henan TV. “I was not sure whether I was suitable for Wushu when I first joined the club,” he told news media. “But when I raised my arms and shouted in happiness after winning the match, I knew immediately that MMA was something I wanted to do for the rest of my life.”

Success stories, such as that of a doctoral student in electrical engineering and a student attending a famous university, are a testament to the program's impact. These students have not only achieved academically but also expressed a desire to contribute to their community.

B.To raise money for cancer patients.
C.To fulfill the volunteering requirements.
D.To uplift people suffering from diseases.
根据第二段中的“Mrs Jourdain and her husband … way to boost the patients' spirits”可知,Jourdain一家参与这项活动的主要原因是希望振奋遭受疾病困扰的人们的精神。故选D。
5.What can we learn about the postcards
A.They are sent to patients after a process.
B.They are attached to volunteers' donations.
C.They are mainly about art in different ways.
D.The content focuses on the patients' daily life.
故选A。
6.What does the underlined word “reignite” mean in the last paragraph
A.Relight. B.Extend.
C.Respond. D.Estimate.
根据画线词下文“Something handwritten is so lovely and personal and cannot be replicated (复制) in an email or text.” 故选A。
7.What can be a suitable title for the text
A.Fulfilling a Dream of Patients with Postcards
B.Messages in Postcards Inspire a Little Writer
C.Putting Smiles on Faces of Patients with Postcards
D.Simple Words in Postcards Impact the Whole World

My mother rang the doorbell, and as the door opened, we were led into the front room where all
the children were engaged in play.
