That future is almost here. “I think it's going to happen. Certainly, in ten years... even faster,” said Sebastian Thrun in 2021. At that time, his company was working on developing flying cars——eVTOL.
Flying to work or school sounds unbelievable. “There would never be heavy traffic again,because the sky is very, very large,” says Thrun. He also thinks eVTOLs could be greener than common cars. “We go much faster. And we fly on less energy,” he says.
Will flying cars' day come There are still many problems to solve. Their high price means most people won't be able to buy one. So, some companies are developing flying cars as air taxis so that more people could have a chance(机会) to take them. Safety is also a problem with flying cars. To make eVTOLs safer, many developers are working hard to find ways to solve the problem.
Another problem is space. Most planes need long runways to take off and land while eVTOLs can lift straight up and down. But eVTOLs still need special spaces called vertiports(垂直起降机场). Besides, it could be tricky to find places to put flying cars, especially in crowded cities.But maybe some could stay on top of buildings.
