Both my wife and I are running lovers. I usually run on the track in my neighbourhood. Most
people walk on the track, so I am faster than them. My speed seems amazing to the walkers and I
often pass by them twenty or more times around the track. This makes me feel proud.
One day, a short man came. He didn't look like much of a runner. I saw him get out of the car
and warm up before running when I passed by two walkers. He started running a few metres
ahead of me. He was fast but I sped up and managed to catch up with him. I had someone to
compete with. But after a lap, I fell behind him and had great difficulty in breathing. After two
laps, my foot began to hurt, so I had to slow down and began to run at my usual speed. This time
I could breathe again without sounding like I had a lung disease and the pain in my foot went
away. In a very short time, he was far ahead. He was too fast for me to follow.
That day, I learnt several lessons. In life, there will always be those slower and faster. Some
have natural talent, and some have trained harder. Don't judge the capacity of a person by how
he or she looks.
The point is that we each have our own speed. When we are trying to keep up, we often end
up hurting ourselves and being out of breath. Slow down or speed up, but run your race to your
best. Don't run fast when you should be running slowly. Don't run at all when you should be
walking. Don't walk when you should be running.
26. Which is NOT true according to the passage

A. age B. job C. attitude D. ability
29. What happened to the author when he slowed down
A. His breath became much heavier. B. His foot didn’t hurt any more.
C. He sounded like having an illness. D. He started to have a pain in his foot.
30. What is the best title for the text
A. The Slower, the Healthier B. The Faster, the Better
C. Keep Fit through Running D. Enjoy Your Own Speed
(C)
The 2024 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, Physics and Chemistry were announced in
sequence (依次) from October 7th. John Hopfield and Geoffrey Hinton won the Nobel Prize in
Physics for discoveries and inventions in machine learning that paved the way for the artificial
intelligence (AI) boom. And John Jumper and Demis Hassabis won the Nobel Prize in
Chemistry for work on decoding the structure of proteins (蛋白质) and creating new ones, by
using AlphaFold which is an AI model they created.
AI is the ability of a computer program or a machine. The computer or the machine with AI
can think and learn. It’s also a field of study that tries to make computers “smart”. 60 years after
John McCarthy came up with the name “artificial intelligence”, many things such as learning
and problem solving can be done by computers, though not in the same way as people do.
Math is the basic language of AI. If students are good at math, they will be more likely to
become successful AI designers in the future. We need not only bright students, but also average
students. As for average students, if they get enough math skills, they can also become
successful AI designers. Besides, a good knowledge of computer science is also necessary for AI
designing.
An unusual goal of AI research is to create computer programs. They can learn, solve
problems, and think logically (逻 辑 地 ). At present, we use the term AI for successfully
understanding human speech, recognizing human faces, operating self-driving cars and
competing in some game systems like playing Go. What’s more, we can even create comics or
5
literary works (文学作品) by using ChatGPT, ERNIE Bot (文心一言) or Kimi.
However, some people, including professor Stephen Hawking, also consider AI a danger to
humans if it develops too quickly. Although AI makes our daily lives more convenient and our
world smarter, it also might lead to unemployment or weaken human creativity.
31. What’s the NOT the purpose of introducing Nobel Prize winners in first paragraph
A. To attract readers’ interest in reading this article.
B. To introduce the description object, artificial intelligence (AI).
C. To introduce their contributions and show the importance of the Nobel Prize.
D. To summarize the entire text and cause further discussion.
32. From paragraph 2, we know that ________.
A. all problems can be solved by computers B. machines with AI can think and learn
C. AI has been around for only 60 years D. AI works in the same way as people
33. If students want to become successful AI designers, they should learn ________ well.
A. math and computer science B. art and technology
C. math and art D. art and computer science
34. We cannot use AI to ________.
A. recognize human faces B. operate self-driving cars
C. play ping-pong D. create literary works
35. The underlined word “it” in paragraph 5 refers to ________.
A. chess B. a scientist C. the danger D. AI
