The expression, “everybody’s doing it,” is very much at the center of peer pressure (同伴压
力). It is a social influence applied on an individual in order to get that person to act or believe in a
21 way as a larger group. This 22 can be negative or positive, and can exist in
both large and small groups.
People are social creatures by nature, and so it is hardly 23 that some part of
their self-respect comes from the approval (认可) of others. This explains why the approval of
peers, and the fear of 24 , is such a powerful force in many people’s lives. This instinct
(本能) drives people to dress one way at home and another way at work, or to answer a simple
“fine” when a stranger asks “how are you ” 25 it is not necessarily true.
For certain individuals, 26 for social acceptance is so important that it becomes
an addiction (上 瘾 ): in order to satisfy the desire (渴 望 ), they may go too far and 27
their sense of right and wrong. Some young people may feel forced to use drugs, or join gangs (帮
派) that 28 criminal behavior. Some adults may sometimes end up in debt (负债)
because they are unable to hold back the desire to buy a house or car that they can’t afford in order
to 29 the peers.
30 , peer pressure is not always negative. A student whose friends do well in
31 may be motivated to work harder and get good grades. Players on a sports team may feel
driven to play harder in order to help the team win. This type of influence can also get a friend off
drugs, or to help an adult develop a good habit or drop a bad one.
Although peer pressure is sometimes quite 32 , some people may not even
notice that it is affecting his or her behavior. For this reason, when making important decisions,
such as choosing a career path or deciding on a major investment, simply going with an instinct is
33 . Instead, people should seriously consider 34 they feel attracted to taking a
certain action. Is it because of their own values, long-term goals, or personal interests They
should also consider whether the real 35 behind their action is simply that everyone
else is doing the same thing. Taking the time to think and make a wiser decision can lead to a
proper and fulfilling life.

I looked at myself in the dressing-room mirror unhappily. I was wearing a white leotard (紧
身衣), and a white swim cap that hid most of my hair. I was one of 10 snowflakes (雪花) in our
dance in school’s Winter Wonderland show.
“Grandma, I really don’t feel like being in the show,” I said. Grandma Lani looked up from
what she was making. “Why, mo‘opuna ” Mo’opuna means “grandchild” in Hawaiian. Grandma
Lani has always lived in Hawaii. “You love to dance.” I used to love to dance. But Ms. Tuttle gave
the lead role of the Snow Queen to Christine. Christine got to wear a blue leotard and a feathery
skirt that spread out like a cloud every time she spun. And she got to do a dance on stage (舞台)
all by herself. The snowflakes just had to run and spin to look like a snowstorm. I sighed. “I don’t
like our dance. And no one would notice if I wasn’t there. There are so many of us.” “I would
notice. So would your parents.” Grandma said.
As Christine walked toward us, Grandma stopped and smiled at her. “What a beautiful
costume(服装)!” Christine walked away, her skirt waving behind her. I hung my head. Grandma
took my hand. “What’s up ” “And you won’t be able to see me among so many snowflakes,” I
whispered.
Grandma was going to speak when something outside the window caught her eye. She took
my hand and my coat and pulled me out of the dressing room and through the doors to the outside.
It was snowing. Grandma held her breath and I suddenly thought of something.
“Grandma, have you ever seen snow before ” “Never, mo’opuna. In Hawaii, it snows only
on the very tops of mountains. ” ①
I had seen snow lots of times, but now I tried to see it differently, like it was new. I saw
snowflakes flying through the air in different directions, shining brightly at us. So many
snowflakes came together to create something magical. ②
“Aloha,” Grandma whispered to the sky. Aloha can mean many things, including “love”,
“hello”, and “good-bye”. “I don’t know when I’ll see something like that again.” “I do,” I said. I
took Grandma Lani’s hand and pulled her back inside. ③
When the stage lights came up and the music started, I spun and ran with all of the other
snowflakes. I didn’t care if Grandma Lani could see me. ④

A.The Snow Queen. B.A snowflake.
C.A snowstorm. D.A granddaughter.

the top of the cupboards, he got under the beds. He cleaned and he cleaned, until his back and
arms ached with tiredness.
It was springtime, and the smell and the sound of spring were everywhere, even in the
Mole’s dark little house under the ground. 51 So it was not surprising that the Mole
suddenly put down his brushes and said, “Oh bother (恼怒)!” and then, and he ran out of his house
and began to dig his way upwards to the sun.
52 ” Up we go!Up we go!” he said to himself, until at last his nose came out into
the sunlight, and he found himself in the warm grass of a field.
“ This is fine!” said the Mole.” This is better than cleaning!” The sunshine was warm on his
back and the air was filled with the songs of birds. 53 Here and there he went, through the
fields and the woods, looking and smelling and listening. Everywhere animals and birds were
busy, looking for food, making new homes for the spring. The Mole enjoyed it all.
54 He had never seen a river before in his life——this wonderful bright shining
thing, which danced its way in and out of the shadows under the trees. It was never still for a
minute, hurrying and laughing and talking to itself.
And at once, the Mole was in love with it. 55 At last he sat down on the grass and
looked across the river to the bank opposite.

体相似。

22.句意:这种影响力可以是负面的,也可以是正面的,并且可以在大群体和小群体中都存
在。

怪。
understandable 可以理解的;important 重要的;acceptable 可以接受的;surprising 令人惊讶
的。根据上文“People are social creatures by nature,”可知,人天生就是社会性动物,所以人类

24.句意:这解释了为什么同伴的认可和对不认可的恐惧在许多人的生活中是如此强大的力
量。
mistakes 错误;failure 失败;disapproval 不赞成;independence 独立。根据“the approval of peers,

使情况并非如此,也会简单地回答“很好”。
as if 好像;even if 即使;since 因为;unless 除非。

“However”。故选 A。

价值观、长期目标还是个人兴趣?所以此处是指他们为什么会被某种行为所吸引。故选 A。

The Mole brushed, and he cleaned the floors and the walls. He stood on the chairs to wash
the top of the cupboards, he got under the beds.

【答案】
Don’t put off today until tomorrow
This well-known saying from the famous American scientist Benjamin Franklin tells us
how to use and manage time well. Some students can’t make good use of their time and this has a
bad influence on their study.
One weekend, I forgot to finish my homework because I only thought of relaxing myself.
On Saturday I played computer games and on Sunday I played football with my friends. But soon
I found I had no time at all to do my homework. The next Monday, the teacher asked me to do
more homework to punish me.
To manage our time well, we should make a good plan and follow it strictly.
