Ⅳ、阅读,完成下面的选择题。
I love flowers, so I love growing them. I’m not an expert, though, because I don’t have time to study or experiment. I just see flower-growing as a pleasure. I don’t care if flowers are big or small, good or bad. I’m happy as long as they bloom. In summer, my small yard is full of flowers and plants. Cats have to play on the roof—no space for them on the ground.
I don’t grow rare or expensive flowers. They’re hard to keep alive. It hurts to watch a good flower die. Beijing’s climate isn’t good for flowers: cold winters, windy springs, dry or rainy summers, and sudden frosts in autumn. I can’t grow southern flowers here, so I choose easy ones that “fight for life” on their own.
But even these flowers need care. If I ignore them, most will die. I look after them like friends. I’ve learned: some like shade, not sun; some like dry soil, not much water. Keeping them alive for years is fun. That’s knowledge, and more knowledge is good.
I have leg problems, so walking and sitting too long are hard. But flowers help. I write a bit, then go out to water or move pots, then go back. This balances brain work and physical work. It’s good for me—better than medicine. When storms come, the family hurries to bring hundreds of pots inside. We get tired and sweaty. The next day, we take them out again, tired again. But it’s fun! Isn’t it true No work, no flowers.
The milkman says, “So fragrant!”(好香) We’re proud. When epiphyllums bloom (昙花开放)at night, friends come to see. It’s like visiting at night with candles. When flowers have new roots, I give some to friends. It makes me happy.
But there are sad times. This summer, heavy rain knocked down a neighbor’s wall, killing over 100 chrysanthemums(菊秧). We were sad for days.
Joy and sorrow(忧), smiles and tears, flowers and fruit, fragrance(香) and color. Work and learning—this is the joy of growing flowers.
