I was cutting up lettuce (生菜) in the kitchen when I suddenly remembered watching a video about putting the lettuce stub (残余部分) in water to grow a whole new vegetable. So I took out a wide-mouthed mug (大杯) and placed the stub into it, gave it a little water, and placed it by the window.
On a snowy morning, I noticed the first sign. A first small leaf from its heart spread out. A tiny green flag of hope. Beaten, but not defeated. Within days, it was impossible to see the cuts where I had removed the leaves. The growth was explosive. And when I lifted the blossoming head out of the mug, tiny root threads fell down, seeking for the earth. What is growing here Lettuce or hope
If I were a lettuce in a similar condition, I’d want to doubtfully assess where I found myself before being devoted to full growth. Yet for this lettuce, my inadequate offering of water and a place by a window was enough for it to decide to reclaim itself again. It grew in a mug of water, in faith. This is the heart of this lettuce: alive, strong and fearless. It deserved a name. I decided to call it Monty.
Monty wanted to grow, as we all do. I think I gave him a little love and freedom. Those two ingredients were all he needed to return to himself. I see joy in this lettuce. The return to self is always an expression of joy, which is life itself. With the right ingredients, this is the tendency of all living things.
Monty still lives in a mug, but I’m going to transplant him outside. He deserves to become his full self. The only problem I see now is my capacity to support Monty. I hope I have enough of a green finger.
I’m surprised to find myself where I am. Maybe Monty is, too. I have the same choice as he does: give in, or start again. The prospect of starting again is discouraging. But my lettuce-friend, Monty, leads the way. I can only hope to be as brave.

27.What can be a suitable title for the text
A.Enjoy your own life to the fullest B.Believe in yourself when in trouble
C.Never be afraid to restart yourself D.Give freedom to the heart in a way

Earthquakes are among the most powerful and destructive natural phenomena on our planet. They result from plate movements, where the Earth’s crustal plates rub against each other, causing stress to build up over time. When this stress exceeds the strength of the rock, it ruptures (断裂), releasing energy in the form of seismic waves (地震波) that travel through the Earth’s interior and shake the surface. The force of an earthquake depends on the extent of rock movement, and powerful events can shake firm ground violently for great distances.
Earthquakes can have disastrous consequences, though they rarely kill people directly. Instead, deaths and injuries are often caused by falling objects, building collapses, and subsequent fires or hazardous chemical spills. So no matter where we are, knowing how to protect ourselves and our family during an earthquake is necessary. For example, when we feel the ground is shaking, find a nice piece of furniture, a chair, a sofa, or a closet, and lie down, or curl up next to it. A falling roof may compact (压实) the furniture, but will still leave a space for us to survive next to it.
After earthquakes, immediate response is crucial to save lives and minimize damage. Governments, international organizations, and local communities should work together to provide emergency relief, including medical aid, food, water, shelter, and search and rescue operations.
Earthquakes are unpredictable and devastating natural disasters that can have profound impacts on communities worldwide. While we cannot prevent earthquakes from happening, we can take steps to mitigate their effects through better building codes, early warning systems, and effective response and recovery efforts. By working together, we can reduce the human toll (伤亡人数) of these powerful events and build more resilient communities.
28.What is Paragraph 1 mainly about

A.Immediate response to others’ help.
B.Quick action and cooperation at home and abroad.
C.Getting connected with family and friends immediately.
D.Waiting for aid from governments, communities and international organizations.
31.What does the underlined word “mitigate” in the last paragraph probably mean
A.Reduce. B.Prevent. C.Research. D.Promote.

Parents can cut the chances of their children getting fat simply by keeping them longer at table. Just three extra minutes at a family mealtime could help prevent child fatness. The reasons might lie in communication and the importance of a scheduled mealtime.
Dr Barbara Fiese said, “Children, whose families have a 20-minute meal over four times a week, weigh lighter than kids who leave the table after15 to 17 minutes. Over time, those extra minutes per meal add up and become really powerful.”
Researchers studied 200 family mealtimes, testing the influences of mealtime habits of families with children in primary school. They found that families, who said that shared mealtimes were an important part of family life and had special meaning for them, were less likely to have fat children. Similarly, families who talked more together and communicated more positively during the meal, were more likely to have healthy-weight children.
Teaching families how to make full use of family mealtimes was a wise idea. “This is something we can do and teach. It’s also important to recognize the increasing differences of families and their complex living schedules that may challenge(挑战) their abilities to plan ahead and set some time to communicate with each other,” said Dr Fiese.
Families in poorer US neighborhoods faced more problems, including poor chances of getting healthy food. But even so, regular high quality family mealtimes made a difference to the children’s weight. Dr Fiese said, “Three to four extra minutes per meal will make a healthy weight more possible.”
32. How long is reasonable for a family mealtime according to the text
A. About 10 minutes. B. About 12 minutes
C. About 15 minutes D. About 20 minutes.
33. What’s the advantage of a longer family mealtime according to the text
A. Children can better enjoy their meals.
B. Children can have a good rest while eating.

D. Children can have more time to choose what they like.
34. What does the author want to show in paragraph3
A. The result of a study. B. Different eating habits.
C. Causes of child fatness. D. The importance of normal eating

B. Healthy food makes normal weigh
C. Poorer families have thinner children
D. Longer family mealtimes help prevent child fat

Once there was a little girl named Emily. Although her singing was very pleasant to hear, lacking of courage, she never dared to sing in front of strangers.
One summer, the neighborhood where she lived would hold a singing competition. Her best friend, Lucy, came to invite her to participate in the competition, but Emily said, “I’m afraid to take part in it.” Her mother said, “It’s okay; just do it bravely.” Emily followed her mama’s advice and decided to give herself a try. The day came. Emily and Lucy went to the competition site. But she was too timid (胆小的)to walk onto the stage. She had been waiting until others finished singing. She shakily (颤抖地)forced herself to stand on the stage. She started to sing, but her voice was so low. What’s worse, she was so nervous that she forgot the lyrics (歌词)after singing a few words. Being laughed at by others, embarrassed and shy, she ran away from the stage.
Some naughty boys ran after her and said, “Emily, coward (胆小鬼)!Emily, coward!” Emily didn’t argue with them. What she wanted was to go back home as quickly as she could. Finally, she rushed into the house, hugged her mom and cried sadly.
“Well, my poor girl, don’t cry. Tell me what happened to you,” asked her mom. Emily looked up at her mother and told her what she had experienced.
Listening to her, her mom cupped her face and said, “It doesn’t matter, girl. As long as you practice singing more in front of strangers, you will become braver little by little. So, my girl, don’t be beaten by a failure. You can go out to practice singing every day. No matter who is listening to you, go on singing and never stop. I believe there will be a harvest for you.”
