The world is a rough place for the long list of endangered species that inhabit it. Taking a volunteer vacation can help make a difference.
Panda Reserve, China
The panda population is declining due to deforestation and a delicate birthing process that leads to high panda baby death rates. The China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda (CCRCGP) has been hard at work for that in the last 20 years. The volunteer project length is one week. You’ll be tasked with preparing food, chopping bamboo, and cleaning enclosures (围场). Several cultural activities are included as well.
Cheetah Conservation, Namibia
Years of conservation efforts in Namibia have allowed the cheetah population to make a comeback in the region. The Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF) welcomes working volunteers. Volunteers live onsite and do everything from chopping meat to collecting scat (粪便) samples. The location is rural and remote, even for Namibian standards. Bring sunscreen and expect to work a wide variety of tasks.
Bali Sea Turtle Rescue, Indonesia
Bali Sea Turtle Rescue’s focus is on spreading conservation knowledge about the delicate state of the global sea turtle population. Bali Sea Turtle Rescue requires that volunteers stay a minimum of fourteen days. Once there, you’ll be charged with feeding, cleaning tanks, caring for sick and injured turtles, nurturing new turtle lives, and searching thoroughly the beach for eggs.
The Orangutan Project, Borneo
The Orangutan Project is based out of the Matang Wildlife Centre in Kubah National Park. As a volunteer at the Orangutan Project, you’ll participate in constructing new platforms, feeding, cleaning, and gardening. The goal of the project is to keep them wild. Unnecessary human contact would make them more dependent on caretakers.
Working volunteers provide a vital service, not only in staff hours but in becoming advocates of the cause. The work doesn’t stop when your volunteer vacation ends. Get out there and spread the word!
1. How long are volunteers required to stay at Bali Sea Turtle Rescue at least
A. Five days. B. One week.
C. Two weeks. D. One month.
2. Which project includes cultural activities as part of the volunteer program
A. Bali Sea Turtle Rescue, Indonesia.
B. Cheetah Conservation, Namibia.
C. The Orangutan Project, Borneo.
D. Panda Reserve, China.
3 What is the writing purpose of the text
A. To introduce different cultures.
B. To advertise holiday destinations.
C. To recommend volunteer vacations.
D. To advocate protecting endangered species.

Computers have taken the crown in chess, Go and poker, but when it comes to competitive coding, humans still have the edge — just.
Recently, Polish coder Przemyslaw Debiak, known online as Psyho, narrowly defeated OpenAI’s algorithm (算法) at the 2025 AtCoder World Tour Finals in Tokyo. The 41-year-old, a former OpenAI employee who retired five years ago, predicts he might be the last human to claim the title, given rapid tech progress. “That’s probable,” he said, noting frustration at the thought of AI outperforming him, though he enjoys the competitions. Psyho acknowledged the irony: coders are fueling their own potential obsolescence (淘汰). “Live by the sword, die by the sword,” he expressed pre-contest, adding, “I helped develop AI and nearly lost to it — though I won, for now.”
The 10-hour contest, featuring 11 top-ranked human coders and OpenAI’s algorithm (which finished second, 9.5% behind Psyho), involves solving complex optimization (最优化) problems like the traveling salesman puzzle — simple to state but computationally tough. While ChatGPT handles repetitive code, AI’s showing in open-ended logic problems impresses.
“Top humans still excel at reasoning and complex problem-solving,” Psyho said, but typing speed caps them. AI, by contrast, rapidly tests small adjustments: “It’s like cloning a human to work at the same time — faster, and sometimes quantity beats a single genius.”
Major firms like Meta and Microsoft now use AI for coding. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei warned that AI could replace 20% of white-collar jobs within five years. “All white-collar roles face this now; manual jobs are safer a few more years,” Psyho noted. Like many in tech, he’s not sure about AI’s rise. “We face disinformation, social impacts, and humans losing purpose,” he said. “Society evolves slowly, meanwhile, tech progress accelerates faster and faster.”
4. What did Psyho imply by saying “Live by the sword, die by the sword”
A. Coding is a dangerous job.
B. He regrets ever joining OpenAI.
C. OpenAI’s algorithm is too complex.
D. Coders speed up their own replacement.
5. According to Psyho, what limits top human coders
A. Slow typing speed. B. AI’s strong competition.
C. Poor reasoning capacity. D. Inability to solve problems.
6. What is Psyho’s attitude towards AI’s rise
A. Supportive. B. Uncertain. C. Critical. D. Indifferent.
7. What would be the best title for the text
A. OpenAI Loses Its Edge B. The Last Human Champion
C. The Decline of Human Coders D. Human Coder Narrowly Defeats AI
C
The American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow once wrote: “Music is the universal language of mankind.” Music is everywhere. But why do we like it so much One idea is that we quickly learn the patterns of music, and our brains feel rewarded when they can “guess” what will come next. But it may go deeper than that.
Neural resonance (神经共振) theory, or NRT, proposes that, just as our body’s internal clock correspond with the light and dark cycles of the Earth, our brains actually correspond with the pitch and rhythm of music. This may be why we enjoy music so much and why we can dance, keep time with a song, and even compose music. Edward W. Large says this isn’t just an abstract idea. “It’s literally the sound causing a physical resonance in the brain,” he told UConn Today.
Along with other researchers from the US, the Netherlands, the UK and Canada, Large recently explained the principles of NRT. The researchers note, for example, that there’s evidence of our brains continuing to react to musical harmonies even after the sounds have stopped. And scans have shown activity in the brain that correlates with keeping time with music, even if the music doesn’t actually have a regular beat the listener can hear.
According to NRT, this resonance is what makes us want to move and dance and music connects not just to our ears and our brains, but even to our limbs and our spinal cords (脊髓). “This theory suggests that music is powerful not just because we hear it, but because our brains and bodies become it,” said Caroline Palmer, one of the researchers. “That has big implications for medical application, education and technology,” Palmer said.
The researchers say that NRT can give us insight into how the brain and body are connected, how music communicates emotion and how our understanding of the effects of music could be applied to brain health in the future.
8. What might explain why humans enjoy music according to paragraph 1
A. Its universal popularity. B. Its emotional expression.
C. Brain’s reward from music. D. Longfellow’s famous quote.
9. What do we know about NRT
A. It shows brain-music link. B. It guides music composition.
C. It is about the day-night cycle. D. It tells us how to listen to music.
10. What might be the future impact of NRT research
A. Boosting advances in technology. B. Improving brain-related conditions.
C. Facilitating research into emotions. D. Helping understand brain structure.
11. What is the text mainly about
A. The universal appeal of music.
B. Benefits brain get from music.
C. A theory clarifying music’s power.
D. The explanation of a universal language.

The Galle Trilingual Inscription has been officially inscribed (刻写) in the UNESCO Memory of the World Register. The stele (石碑) was constructed over 600 years ago during Zheng He’s expeditions.
The stele’s rounded top features two dragons playing with a pearl. It is the only one surviving overseas that is related to Zheng’s voyages. It’s still distinguishable today. It tells us that Zheng paid respect to religious sites and made celebration offerings during his visits. Carved in three languages — Chinese, Tamil and Persian — the stele has a historical value beyond words.
“There are many multilingual inscriptions in the world, but most of them are bilingual,” says Wang Hongmin from the National Archives Administration of China. “Among the tri-lingual ones, only two include Chinese. The Galle Trilingual Inscription is the only one inscribed in Chinese, Persian and Tamil.”
The inscription records Zheng’s offerings of equal value to several deities (神祇). “This practice reflects the Zheng’s respect for religious diversity,” says Wang Deyan from the North China University of Technology.
This year marks the 620th anniversary of Zheng’s voyages. The explorer first set sail from Nanjing in 1405 and traveled as far as the eastern coast of Africa. At the time, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) served as a key maritime center in the Indian Ocean. It played a vital role in connecting Asian countries with the Arab world. Wang Deyan added.
“Experts generally agree that Zheng stopped in Ceylon on almost every voyage” notes Wang Deyan. “He was on cordial terms with the local people. Their interactions not only facilitated cultural exchanges but also laid a solid foundation for trade between China and Ceylon at that time.”
China and Sri Lanka have maintained a long-standing and close partnership in the study and preservation of the Galle Trilingual Inscription. It is a symbol of the historical relationship between the two nations and a reminder to cherish cultural diversity.
12. Why is the Galle Trilingual Inscription special
A. It is inscribed in three languages. B. It has complicated structure.
C. It was built by local people. D. It can still be recognized.
13. What role does paragraph 5 play in the text
A. Detailing the stele’s features.
B. Providing historical context.
C. Describing preservation efforts.
D. Highlighting international cooperations.
14. Which can replace the underlined phrase in paragraph 6
A. Deeply absorbed by. B. In cautious reliance on.
C. Constantly disturbed by. D. In a friendly relationship with.
15. What can be inferred about the stele from the last paragraph
A. It shows cultural ties. B. It is newly discovered.
C. It is stored in two countries. D. It records conflicts between nations.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Music and art have always been closely connected, with each influencing the other in important ways. ____16____ The practice creates experiences that blur (模糊) the boundaries between the auditory (听觉的) and visual senses.
One of the most striking examples of this trend is the rise of “sound art” which explores the relationship between sound and visual representation. ____17____ These connections often use technology to transform sound in innovative ways. They can create an environment where the viewer becomes an active participant in the artistic experience.
____18____ Directors are now experimenting with soundscapes that extend beyond traditional narrative (叙述) structures, using music to arouse emotions and create atmosphere rather than simply underline plot points. This special art form often challenges traditional ideas of storytelling.
Despite these innovations, some artists argue that the integration of music into art can sometimes have different effects from the primary visual message. Critics have warned that the overuse of music can strongly impact the viewer’s senses. They believe that music should serve as a complement (补充) to the visual art. ____19____ Good music should fit well with the art, making people enjoy the art more instead of paying less attention to it.
To address this concern, many artists are now focusing on creating a more harmonious balance between music and visual art. This trend highlights the importance of finding the right balance between them. These artists carefully select and integrate musical elements, aiming to create works that are both visually striking and aurally engaging. ____20____
A. Artists note technology may perfect sound-visual balance.
B. It should enhance the art’s effect rather than overshadow it.
C. Thus, viewers can be offered a truly multisensory experience.
D. Sound art allows for an interplay between images and viewers.
E. Artists are increasingly integrating musical elements into their work.
F. Moreover, the use of music in film and video art has also developed.
G. Sound art combinations often involve large-scale, interactive sound environments.

Emma’s love for the guitar began at seven, when she found her grandfather’s old guitar in the dusty storeroom. A warm feeling spread from her fingertips to her chest as she touched the strings — a connection that grew stronger each year. Now sixteen, her room showed her passion: bright guitar posters covered the walls, a jar of colorful picks sat on her desk, and a well-used songbook with quick notes lay beside her bed. She practiced every day, slipping out after dinner to go to guitar classes downtown. Those evenings, learning to make melodies felt like real freedom.
Her father, Mr. Thompson, a careful engineer who liked order, saw her love of guitar as a distraction. “Engineering equations (方程) don’t care about guitar solos,” he’d say sharply, his brow wrinkling as he shut her bedroom door while she was practicing. Every Thursday, he checked her report card with a ruler in hand, tapping hard on her weak math part until she pulled back. “A 72 in algebra won’t get you into MIT,” he’d say coldly, ignoring her trying to explain that equations confused her.
Emma tried hard to balance both. She’d wake up at 5 a.m. to study trigonometry (三角学) by lamp light before school, and then hurry to the music room at lunch to practice. While her guitar skills got better, math stayed hard. Her music teacher, Mr Lee, seeing her talent, secretly put her in the city “Young Musicians” contest. Last Friday, she stepped on stage and played a song she’d written about her conflicting interests. When named winner, she hugged her guitar, the gold trophy (奖杯) shining.
Smiling widely, she ran home to show the trophy before dealing with her math test. But her father waited in the hallway, jaw tight, her wrinkled test in his hand. The red 68 written on top seemed to glow like a warning.
注意:
1.写作词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Emma froze, her excitement disappearing in an instant.

【答案】
Emma froze, her excitement disappearing in an instant. The trophy in her hand felt heavy as lead. “What’s this ” her father asked, holding the crumpled test paper, his voice low with anger. She tried to speak, and then held out the trophy, fingers shaking. “I won the guitar contest,” she whispered. He glanced at the trophy, then back at the paper. “Wasting time on a contest instead of studying ” he shouted, his face turning red. Emma was frightened, stepping back. “I tried, Dad, but I really like playing the guitar, and Ms. Lee said that I have a talent for music.” she said, tears rolling down her cheeks.
That night, Emma’s persistence seemed to move her father. As she neared sleep, a soft knock came. “Can I come in ” he asked, his voice much softer. Emma opened the door. “I’m sorry I shouted. I want what’s best for you,” he said, sitting on the edge of the bed. Emma looked surprised. “Guitar makes me happy. I’ll work on math, but don’t make me stop,” she begged. Staring at the trophy on the desk and hesitant for a few seconds, he sighed. “We’ll find a balance. I’ll help with math if you try your hardest,” he replied. Emma hugged him. “Thank you, Dad.” For the first time, she felt all would go well.
