Victor Su never imagined that a life-altering health challenge would bring him back to Northwestern University. After earning degrees in chemical and industrial engineering at Northwestern University, he spent twenty years in consulting and finance, ultimately working around the world — from America to Japan to the United Kingdom.
However, because of putting in long hours at his job in London, Su suffered from a severe disease. His doctors didn’t expect him to survive. But after returning to New York City, via an air ambulance, Su overcame numerous difficulties. He gradually pulled himself out of a tough situation. He underwent five months of treatment and learned to walk again. He also struggled with right-side paralysis (瘫痪), memory loss, and a communication disorder that could affect his ability to talk, read, write, and understand spoken language.
After Su was discharged from the hospital, his wife, Patricia Kou, knew he would need more treatment to keep improving. Searching online, she found a one-month intensive program at the Northwestern University Center for Audiology, Speech, Language, and Learning. In 2017, Kou accompanied Su to Northwestern University, where he worked five to six hours a day with speech and language clinicians. “It was a lifesaver for Su,” Kou says. “He regained his ability to communicate at the center and continued to progress at home through online sessions with the medical team.”
“The treatment I received at Northwestern University made a huge difference in my recovery,” Su says. “I am forever grateful.”
In gratitude for the treatment Su received the family made a generous gift to establish the Su Family Community Impact Fund, which would help the university expand diagnostic and treatment services to underserved children and adults throughout the Chicago area.
“One of our top priorities is to provide high-quality clinical services, not just to those who come to our clinic but to everybody in the community who may have trouble accessing them,” says a professor. The gift from the Su family will also support innovative and interdisciplinary research partnerships within the university.

These days it’s quite easy to strike up a conversation with artificial intelligence (AI). Ask some chatbots a question, and they’ll even provide an engaging response verbally. You can chat with them across multiple languages and request a reply in a particular dialect or accent.
It is now even possible to use AI-powered speech cloning tools to imitate the voices of real humans. It raises an interesting question: Is there anything unique about the human voice to help us distinguish it from robo-speech
Jonathan Harrington, a professor of phonetics (语音学) and digital speech processing at the University of Munich, Germany, has spent decades studying the complexity of how humans talk and produce the sounds of words and accents. Even he is impressed by the capabilities of AI-powered voice tools. But he believes there are still some important cues that can help us to tell if we are talking to a human or an Al. “To some extent, computer-generated speech has been quite poor and not very human-like”, says Harrington.
He further gives the following reasons. Listening for the emphasis words given in a sentence can be a good trick for spotting computer-generated speech. This is because humans use emphasis to give a sentence more meaning. Intonation — the rise and fall of the voice in speaking across a sentence — can also change the same words from being a statement into a question. Phrasing is also an important factor. The way a sentence is broken up can also change its meaning. Together these elements are famous as sentence-level prosody (韵律学).
There are also moves to make deepfake detection software more readily available to consumers. But in the unavoidable race between AI generation and AI detection, we may find new value in something we have lost in our increasingly virtually connected world — physical interaction. Perhaps in the search to find out if you are speaking to a human, the solution is simple — spending more time meeting in person.

We have all heard how plastic pollution has overrun every corner of the world. Recently, scientists made the surprising discovery that microplastics are increasing sharply and are even found in the human bloodstream.
Researchers collected a large amount of data through many attempts. Recently, after examining blood samples from 22 healthy blood donors, they found particles (粒子) of plastic in 17 of them! Most of the microplastics were classified as polyethylene terephthalate (PET), which is commonly found in drink bottles, and there were small amounts of polyethylene, which makes up plastic bags.
Although the exact chemical effects of microplastics on our bodies are not determined, it is clear that the increasing amounts of plastic in our environment could pose a risk to human cells in the future.
Microplastics were never considered a significant threat to the atmosphere until recent studies began to reveal just how common these tiny particles are across the skies. For example, scientists even discovered the presence of microplastics in the Pyrenees mountain range in Europe, a place thought to be remote and believed to have arrived by rain or snow.
The low mass of microplastics makes them particularly airborne, which is why they can travel hundreds and even thousands of miles from their source. They are also likely to spread through wastewater, oceans, and even soil.
Plastic particles that are being blown and swept into the air have the potential to affect air quality and cloud formation. The undeniable concern is that an excess of microplastics in the air can form artificial clouds that tend to stick around longer than naturally formed clouds. With microplastics dominating the air we breathe, there is also an increasing concern that they may affect the human lungs and respiratory (呼吸的) system. The new study allows us to better understand the impacts on human health and is a reminder of the urgent need to find other alternatives to plastic.
