“During the last 15 km, I felt faint and my face and hands were dead,” recalled Miao Hao, China’s first professional triathlete (参加三项全能赛的运动员). Exhausted at the last 200m at the IRONMAN Hamburg European Championship held in Germany on June 2, Miao collapsed near the finish line, crawling his way across it.
As a super tough race with multiple sports, the Ironman Triathlon includes a 3.8 km swim, a 180 km bike ride and a 42.195 km marathon. Being a former military triathlete, Miao represented the national team before retiring in 2018. The government offered him a job as a civil servant. But Miao chose to pursue a career as a professional triathlete, giving up the stability of the former.
Going from a national team athlete to a professional has presented significant challenges for Miao. “In the national team, I had comprehensive support and was merely an athlete. Now, I am also a husband and a father, shouldering family responsibilities like dropping my son off at primary school before starting my training,” he noted. Miao also faces financial pressure due to managing his own coaching, physiotherapists, nutritionists and support staff.
As the first professional triathlete in China, Miao is exploring future options for professional athletes. In addition to training, Miao shares his training and competition experiences through social media to attract more people to understand and participate in triathlon. At the same time, he regularly communicates with various sports clubs to introduce the charm of triathlon. “To boost triathlon in China and prepare for future Olympics, we need teamwork from various sectors, including more youth training and business sponsorship,” he said. “I hope more Chinese triathletes will compete in the Olympics and stand on more stages,” said Miao.

The inspiration for Michigan Words came from a desire to make poetry a shared experience — accessible and visible to all Michiganders. Poetry often lives in books, workshops, or private spaces, but I wanted to bring it into public life in a way that invited community participation and reflection. I wanted the poets and their neighbors to feel pride in seeing words written by living people in their community on billboards, big and towering above our landscapes. The billboards are great for this goal because they show language in everyday life. They fit into daily trips and ordinary routines, but they are also eye-catching enough to make people stop and think.
Working collaboratively with the poets to design each billboard was one of the most rewarding aspects of the project. We held brainstorming sessions and discussed each design element together to ensure that the poets’ visions were fully realized. I selected poets who truly represent Michigan’s geographic and cultural diversity. Brittany Rogers from Detroit, Jonah Mixon-Webster from Flint, and M. Bartley Seigel from Houghton are three powerhouse poets from three very different regions whose work resonates (共鸣) with communities across the state. I worked with the Library of Michigan to create a universal design, but I wanted the authors to have full control over the work they shared. The poets did a wonderful job.
When deciding where to locate the billboards, I wanted each location to have balanced visibility. This careful placement ensured that the lines of poetry would be seen and felt as part of their environment.
I am happy to see the impact of this project. Recently, M. Bartley Seigel shared how much the project affected him personally, saying, “I think my mom has been more excited about the billboard than a lot of other sort of poetry accomplishments that I’ve had in my life.”
I hope Michigan Words connects people and regions, and brings poets and passers-by together. It celebrates Michigan’s voices and shows that poetry, like our shared landscapes, is everywhere, waiting to be noticed and accepted.

Young loggerhead sea turtles (红海龟) perform a special dance when they sense food, and researchers have used this behavior to study whether these turtles can recognize specific magnetic fields (磁场) linked to past feeding locations. The findings, published in Nature, suggest that loggerheads can learn the magnetic signatures of certain places, creating a mental magnetic map.
Sea turtles are known for their long journeys, traveling thousands of miles while maintaining a strong sense of direction. They often return to the same feeding grounds and nesting beaches. Scientists have long known that sea turtles use Earth’s magnetic field to find their way, but traveling precisely to specific locations requires more than just directional awareness. It involves knowing exact coordinates (坐标).
To put the idea that they can create a mental magnetic map of important locations to the test, Goforth and her workmates collected several loggerhead hatchlings on an island off North Carolina. The turtles were returned to the wild the following summer.
In the lab, young loggerhead sea turtles were put in containers connected to a magnetic system. When an electric current was sent through the system, it created a magnetic field inside the containers. The scientists adjusted these fields to match the magnetic conditions of different places along the East Coast, like areas in the Gulf of Mexico or along the coast of Maine. Each turtle was exposed to two distinct magnetic fields. Over a two-month conditioning period, the turtles spent equal amounts of time in each field — but were only fed in one of them. Then, during experimental trials over several days, the team re-created the two magnetic fields but did not feed the turtles.
The scientists discovered that, even with no food actually present, the sea turtles displayed their dancing behavior when they encountered the magnetic conditions that were associated with past feedings. This supports the idea that these animals can learn the magnetic coordinates of feeding locations.

Online as it was, this class created a totally immersive atmosphere. By comparing the differences and similarities of Chinese landscape painting and Western oil paintings, the video gave us a new insight into the different painting skills. It also triggered our passion to explore more about the ever-lasting beauty of paintings. Honestly, it would be better if more interactive elements, such as mini-games or real-time comments, are included in this class. Generally speaking, it was truly fantastic.

Tim knew his mistake had cost the team dearly. He couldn’t help but blame himself for the failure. As he sat on the edge of the track, tears of frustration welled up in his eyes. He wondered if his teammates would ever forgive him, and if he would ever be able to make up for what he had done.
Just then, Mark, Jack, and Alex appeared. They walked up to Tim and sat down beside him. Mark placed a comforting hand on Tim’s shoulder and said, “Hey, it’s not your fault. These things happen. We’re a team, and we all make mistakes.” Jack nodded in agreement, adding, “We didn’t lose because of you. We lost because we didn’t work together well enough in that moment. Let’s learn from this and come back stronger next time.” Alex smiled and patted Tim on the back, saying, “We’re still proud of you, and we know you’ll do better next time. We’re in this together.”
