Unit 3 After-school activities-Lesson 3 Colourful activities
This lesson is from Unit 3 After-school activities of the 2024 edition of the Hebei Education Press English textbook for Grade 7. It focuses on helping students explore various after-school activities through a survey. The content mainly includes new words related to activities and emotions, expressions about free time and hobbies, and the usage of frequency adverbs. By completing a survey about clubs, students can better understand their own interests and make choices about club participation. The lesson not only enriches students' vocabulary but also improves their ability to express personal preferences and daily habits in English.
教学目标 1. Knowledge Objectives Students will be able to master the following new words: survey, relax, seldom, mind, instrument, still, active, inside, anywhere, bored. They can understand and use the expressions such as free time, play an instrument. Students will grasp the usage of frequency adverbs (always, usually, often, sometimes, seldom, never) to describe the frequency of activities. 2. Ability Objectives Enable students to accurately understand the content of the survey about clubs and answer relevant questions. Develop students' ability to choose suitable clubs according to their own daily habits and hobbies, and express their personal preferences clearly in English. Improve students' reading and writing skills through reading the survey and writing about their club choices. 3. Encourage students to actively communicate and cooperate with their peers, and enhance their sense of teamwork.

教学过程
1. Warming-up (5 minutes)
Greet the students and start a free talk. Ask them, "Do you have a favourite club " Encourage students to answer "Yes, I do." or "No, I don’t." Then let them talk with their partners about what clubs they would like to join. Walk around the classroom to listen to their conversations and give some guidance if necessary.
2. Pre-reading (10 minutes)
Present some pictures of different clubs on the PPT, such as a dancing club, a music club, a sports club, etc. While showing the pictures, ask students to describe what they see. For example, "What can you do in a dancing club " Guide them to answer with relevant words like "dance", "practice ballet", etc.
Then introduce the topic of the survey about clubs. Explain to students that they are going to do a survey to find out which club suits them best. Read the first question of the survey "Do you get enough exercise " on the PPT and briefly explain the four choices A, B, C, and D. Let students circle their choices individually.
3. While-reading (15 minutes)
Have students read the rest of the questions in the survey silently. Walk around the classroom to ensure they are reading carefully. After they finish reading, give them a few minutes to circle their choices for each question.
Then, ask students to work in pairs. They need to compare their answers and talk about why they made such choices. For example, if a student chose B for the question "What is your favourite school subject ", he/she may say "I chose B because I like to play an instrument, and music class gives me a chance to do that."
Select several pairs to share their conversations with the whole class. Listen carefully and give positive feedback and encouragement.
4. Post-reading (10 minutes)
Show the rules of calculating club choices on the PPT: 3 or more As — Sports; 3 or more Bs — Music; 3 or more Cs — Art; 3 or more Ds — Reading. If it's in the middle, for example, 2 As + 2 Bs — Sports and Music. Let students calculate their own club choices according to their answers.
Ask students to write down their club choices and reasons on a piece of paper. They should write at least two sentences. For example, "My choice of club is the sports club. I like playing basketball. I often play basketball with my friends after school."
Invite some students to come to the front of the class and share their writing. Praise their good work and correct any language mistakes gently.
5. Summary (5 minutes)
Review the new words and expressions learned in this class with students. Write them on the blackboard and ask students to read them together.
Summarize the usage of frequency adverbs again. Use some simple examples to help students remember.
Recap the process of doing the survey about clubs and choosing suitable clubs. Encourage students to actively participate in after-school club activities in real life.
教学反思
After this class, I think the overall teaching process went smoothly. The warming-up and pre-reading activities effectively aroused students' interest and prepared them for the following reading. The while-reading and post-reading activities provided students with enough opportunities to practice reading, speaking, and writing, which helped them better master the knowledge. However, there are also some areas that need improvement. Some students still had difficulties in using frequency adverbs accurately, especially when expressing more complex sentences. In the future, more exercises and examples should be provided to strengthen this part. Also, during the group work, a few students were less active. I need to find better ways to encourage every student to participate actively in class activities.
