Four South Pacific's Cruise Destinations
New Caledonia
Mixing French and Pacific beauty, New Caledonia is a different destination. Visiting the world's largest enclosed salty lake on the 11-day South Pacific: Vanuatu& Lifou sailing, you can taste coffee in the city at a Parisian-style cafe. In the capital, Noumea, discover how French culture deeply influences city life. And don't miss the archaeologically striking Tjibaou Cultural Center.
Vanuatu
Cruise (航游) among Vanuatu's 80 islands on NCL's 11-day South Pacific: Vanuatu& Lifou sailing aboard Norwegian Spirit. Explore the local markets in Port Vila for handicrafts, or visit the popular Mele Cascades, where you can swim underneath a thundering waterfall. Mystery Island is the perfect place to spend the day unwinding, walking or just appreciating the beauty of the South Pacific.
New Zealand
New Zealand is a wilderness best viewed from the water. With many departures available, sail on the 14-day Australia & New Zealand — Melbourne & Milford Sound route. Carved by glaciers (冰川), the UNESCO World Heritage-listed fjord is surrounded by mountain rocks. When in New Zealand, it would be a shame not to try a local wine. While there are plenty of onboard bars, head out on a shore journey to explore the Hawke's Bay wine.
Fiji
In Fiji, find wild swimming spots, bathe in natural hot springs, lower yourself into volcanic mud pools and swim among schools of curious fish. But as astonishing as its beauty is, it's the people that make Fiji so special — their warmth is a highlight of the 14-day South Pacific — Fiji, Vanuatu& Airlie Beach course. Guests can visit a local village for a unique cultural experience.
1. What sets New Caledonia apart from the other destinations
A. Popular bars. B. A mixed culture.

Looking down at the road, Anna picked up a toad(蟾蜍)and carefully placed it in a bucket(水桶). More and more toads were crossing the road, so Anna had to move swiftly. The toads were naturally seeking out a nearby lake in reproducing season, but between them and the water was a road with traffic.
Anna is one of the volunteers for Froglife, a charity that carries out toad protection to help the creatures make it safely to the other side of the road. “The toads come down from the hills and woods where they’ve spent the winter and need to get to their egg-laying grounds,” says Anna, 53, a housing support worker.
“I’ve always liked frogs ever since I was little when I collected frog decorations. Doing something practical to help these animals now is very special. The numbers of frogs and toads have sharply declined, and I want to do everything I can for them. I love helping these little creatures.”
Froglife is devoted to conserving amphibian and reptile(爬行动物)species and their habitats. Anna first became involved when she saw an advert in a local newspaper and has now been part of the toad protection in Bath for the past 18 years.
“When I first started, I thought I would be standing in the road stopping traffic so the toads could cross the road in a line,” she explains. “But I found I had to pick them up and put them in a bucket because it’s a long and winding road and the toads can get confused.”
Although the roads are closed off for six weeks as egg-laying season approaches, drivers who need to reach their homes are allowed on them. “It can be a bit dangerous but we work in pairs, with a powerful flashlight,” says Anna.
“I’ve made some lovely friends, who I’d never have met otherwise, from being involved in the protection. Knowing I’ve helped the little animals is so rewarding.”
4. What is the reason why toads cross the road
A. To look for some food. B. To escape from their enemies.
C. To reach their reproducing sites. D. To find a warmer place for winter.
5. Why does Anna think picking up toads is necessary
A. They are afraid of lamplight.
B. They are too slow to avoid cars.
C. They prefer being carried by humans.
D. They may get lost on the winding road.
6. Which of the following best describes Anna
A. Caring and committed. B. Ambitious and creative.
C Outgoing and humorous. D. Careless but determined.
7. Which serves as the best title for the text
A A Dangerous Road for Toads B. How to Protect Toads in Winter
C. Anna: A Devoted Toad Protector D. Froglife: A Charity Saving Reptiles

Neurons (神经元) have been discovered in mice that help their brains track and recover from sleep debt. If a similar pathway exists in humans, it could help treatments for sleep disorders.
To find out more about how the brain tracks sleep loss, Mark Wu at Johns Hopkins University in Maryland and his colleagues mapped brain pathways that are involved in sleep in mice by putting a tracer (示踪剂) into 11 brain areas known to induce sleep.
The tracer, which travels from neurons receiving signals to those sending them, revealed 22 regions with connections to at least four sleep-promoting areas of the total 11.
The researchers focused on 11 previously unidentified regions. Using a technique called chemogenetics, they gave mice specialized drugs that activate particular parts of their brains. They divided the mice into 11 groups of three to four individuals, activating a different area in each group.
A region called the thalamic nucleus reuniens (TNR) seemed to be key. When neurons in this area were stimulated, the mice experienced the greatest increase in non-rapid eye movement (REM) sleep — about twice the amount as mice that weren’t stimulated. However, it took several hours for the animals to fall asleep after stimulation, during which they seemed to prepare for rest, for example, by making their nests soft. This suggests these neurons aren’t an on-and-off switch for sleep, but instead induce sleepiness. In another test, deactivating these neurons in six mice whose sleep was deprived (剥夺) made them less sleepy.
“The findings suggest this brain region drives sleepiness and starts restorative sleep after sleep loss,” says Wu. Developing therapies (治疗) that target these neurons could lead to new treatments for hypersomnia, a sleep condition featuring more than enough sleepiness after rest.
8. What was the aim of Mark Wu’s team’s research
A. To cure sleep problems in mice.
B. To learn how the brain monitors sleep loss.
C. To check if a new drug helps mice sleep better.
D. To find similarities between human and mouse sleep.
9. What does the underlined word “induce” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Reduce. B. Prevent. C. Observe. D. Cause.
10. What can be known about the TNR
A. It directly controls when sleep starts or stops.
B. Stimulating it makes mice go to sleep right away.
C. Stimulating it leads to a big rise in non-REM sleep.
D. Deactivating it makes sleepy mice feel more lively.
11. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about
A. The potential application of the finding.
B. The process of testing sleep recovery in mice.
C. The causes of common sleep disorders in humans.
D. The differences between human and mouse sleep.
D
Picture you’re sitting in your living room, windows open. What do you hear The sound of a flowing river The soft voice of human chatter in a cafe A soundscape is your aural(声音的)environment — everything you can hear around you, and researchers say the soundscape can influence your well-being.
In times gone by, soundscapes would’ve consisted of the sounds of nature, such as bird call and the sound of waves. The reality of human life in the 21st Century means that air travel, construction and traffic noises are now in the mix, and agricultural noise means that not even rural life is safe. Noise pollution can lead to heightened stress levels, damaged mental function and higher risk of heart disease in humans, according to an article published by the UK Parliament called “The effects of artificial light and noise on human health”. Not only that, it can also affect the behavior and life cycles of species which rely on sound.
So, what can be done Urban design is one trick. In Barcelona in Spain, urban planners designed “superblocks”, where traffic goes around big groups of buildings and the inner streets are for pedestrians(行人), creating space for people and wildlife that is free from sounds of cars and motorbikes. In a 2025 article published in BMC Public Health, people in these areas reported an improvement in well-being, quality of sleep and reduction in noise.
Other techniques include tree buffers(缓冲), where trees are planted in urban areas to absorb sound energy. In the Netherlands, they have created earth banks next to Schiphol airport to absorb noise from the runways and protect residents in the surrounding areas. And it turns out that they make excellent sound barriers, particularly if the trees are large, thick and evergreen.
When we think about improving our environment, it’s likely that your mind jumps to reducing litter and air pollution. But reducing noise pollution is also important, to create a soundscape that works for everyone — people and wildlife.
12. What did soundscapes mainly consist of in the past
A. Traffic and construction noises. B. Agricultural noises in rural areas.
C Natural sounds like birdcall and waves. D. Sounds from cafes and human chatter.
13. What is the purpose of Barcelona’s “superblocks”
A. To protect historical buildings.
B. To increase green spaces in cities.
C. To promote the use of public transport.
D. To separate pedestrians from traffic noise.
14. Why are evergreen trees used as sound barriers
A. They provide habitats for urban wildlife.
B. They can take in large amounts of sound.
C. They are more attractive than other plants.
D. They grow quickly and are easy to maintain.
15. What can we infer about noise pollution from the last paragraph
A. It greatly disturbs people’s mind peace.
B. It is the key to environmental improvement.
C. It is often ignored in environmental protection.
D It affects the environment more than air pollution.

Ms. Clara’s grocery store is a small, sunlit space with wooden floors and shelves. There’s a handwritten sign by the register: “Trust runs this store — pay later if you need to.” I started helping her after school last month, and soon learned that sign wasn’t just words.
One rainy evening, a woman burst in, her raincoat dripping (滴水) onto the floor. She grabbed a bag of rice and a carton of eggs, and then patted her pockets with a panicked look. “I left my wallet at home,” she said, voice tight. “Luna — my name’s Luna. I live on Green Street, two blocks over. I’ll be back tomorrow, I promise. My mom’s waiting for dinner.” Ms. Clara wrapped the eggs carefully. “Go on, dear. The rain won’t wait.” As Luna hurried out, I noticed her black umbrella — its handle wrapped in blue tape — standing against the pickle jar (坛子). I called out, but she was already gone.
The next day, the umbrella still stood by the jar, its fabric drying into wrinkled waves. Luna didn’t show. Another such day passed. My chest felt heavy. I kept looking at the door, then at the umbrella. “Maybe she forgot ” I said. Ms. Clara just wiped the counter and said, “Everyone gets busy. Let’s give her time.” But I found myself checking the umbrella more, wondering if it was just a trick — leave something cheap to earn trust, and then disappear.
On the third day, the umbrella had become a silent topic. “Ms. Clara, that umbrella’s probably all we’ll get,” I said. I should’ve made her leave her phone number. “What if she never comes ” I asked Ms. Clara, who was arranging oranges. She looked up, her eyes soft. “Then we’ll know. But if she does We’ll know she’s worth trusting. That umbrella’s not a trick — it’s a reminder. Some people’s words are heavier than any wallet.”
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
A few days later, when I almost forgot that, Luna turned up.
