Although farming was new to him, Gill took the challenge and his experiences helped him write his book Ace and the Animal Heroes. The story follows Ace, whose life changes greatly when he moves to the countryside. After trying on a pair of magical wellies (长筒靴), Ace realizes he can speak to the animals, who make up their minds to protect the farm.
Gill says that if he had his own pair of magical wellies, he would love to speak to wildlife, especially the wild deer (鹿) that sometimes appear near his farm. As they have no owners, Gill feels like he's sharing their home. “It's really interesting to hear what they're thinking and know where they're at,” he said.
Gill got his ideas for writing from the animals on his family farm. His children, Ace and Chiara, helped out with his book. The idea that red means stop and green means go has influenced our lives in more ways than just traffic signals. We have been taught from a young age that the color red means danger and green means it’s okay to move forward. But why were those colors chosen for traffic lights in the first place
Believe it or not, yellow was once used to mean stop. Back in the 1900s, some stop signs were yellow because it was too hard to see a red sign in a poorly lit area. Finally, highly reflective materials (高反射材料) were developed and red stop signs were born. Since yellow can be seen well at all times of the day, school areas, some traffic signs and school buses continue to be printed yellow.
Nowadays, when traffic lights turn red, cars and people stop. But why red The answer comes from science and how our eyes work. Light travels through air and sometimes scatters (spreads out). Colors with long wavelengths (波长) scatter less. Red has the longest wavelength we can see, so it scatters the least. This means red light travels farther, especially on rainy or foggy days.
Red helps drivers see the stop signal from far away. If drivers see red early, they have more time to slow down. At 60 km/h, seeing red 100 meters earlier gives 6 extra seconds to stop safely.
Red also has a special meaning in our minds. It makes us act quickly because we often connect red with danger. Our brains react faster to red than to other colors.
8.What does the underlined word “signals” mean
A. A few steps that people should take.
B. Messages or information that are sent from one place.
C. A group of people who work together to achieve a goal.
D. Tools that help people or things move from one place to another.
9.Why were some stop signs yellow in the 1900s according to the text
A. Yellow was cheaper to produce.
B. People liked yellow more.
C. Yellow could reflect light better.
D. Red was hard to see in dark places.
10.Why does red light work better in rain nowadays
A. Because it scatters less in the air.
B. Because it can change weather.
C. Because it is easy for cars to see.
D. It is brighter than any other colour light.
11.What happens to the drivers if they see the traffic lights 100 meters earlier
A. They feel tired and sleepy.
B. They realize they are in danger.
C. They drive slowly and stop suddenly.
D. They get 6 more seconds to stop at 60 km/h.
D
China has become the world’s largest producer and market of EVs (电车). According to a report, 9.58 million Chinese-made EVs were produced and 9.49 million were sold in 2023. Among the total sales, 1.2 million EVs were exported (出口).
The Chinese government has been encouraging EVs as part of its effort for green, high-quality development. As a result, China’s EV industry develops very quickly. At Auto (汽车) China 2004, BYD was the only company showing EVs there. At Auto China 2024, there were 278 different EV models on show, including BYD, SAIC, Geely, Li Auto, Nio, Xpeng and other brands (品牌).
China’s EV industry is now facing both challenges and chances. It’s reported that 71% of EV brands cut prices in 2023. EV makers without the ability of innovation (创新) will face growing risks. In order to be both green and smart, Chinese EV makers are trying hard to improve technologies like battery qualities and AI support. At the same time, the government is adding even more charging points (充电站). On the other hand, more Chinese people are aware of the environmental problems. It is encouraging more buyers to choose EVs.
EVs are the way of the future. In an ideal world, everyone benefits from innovation and green transport. Some might get there sooner than others, and will gain greater rewards. It is very likely that China will hold the lead.
12.How many Chinese-made EVs were sold in China in 2023
A. 8.38 million. B. 9.49 million.
C. 9.58 million. D. 8.29 million.
13.What is the purpose of Paragraph 2
A. To introduce different EV brands in China.
B. To give some information about Auto China.
C. To show the development of China’s EV industry.
D. To advise people to buy Chinese-made EVs.
14.EV makers can most probably reduce growing risks by ______.
A. improving innovation ability B. winning the government’s support
C. adding more charging points D. dealing with environmental problems
15.What’s the writer’s attitude (态度) towards the future of China’s EV industry
A. Uncertain. B. Hopeful.
C. Doubtful. D. Worried.

How to Get on Well with Our Parents
Parents are the people who love us most. They care for us and take care of us. Without doubt we should get on well with them and respect them. Here are some of my ways to get on well with my parents.
First of all, I often talk with my parents about my feelings and worries so that they can know me better. Sharing ideas can make us closer. What’s more, I am never rude to them even if we don’t agree with each other. Being polite is the key to a better relationship. Besides, I often find out the reasons why we have different ideas. Only in this way can we accept each other little by little.
Let’s try our best to get on well with our parents. The more we do, the better relationship with our parents we will have.
