Teaching Methods
Communicative Language Teaching Method: Create real - life - like communication scenarios to encourage students to use English to express their ideas about animals.
Task - based Learning Method: Design various tasks, such as listening tasks, reading tasks, speaking tasks and writing tasks, to enable students to learn English in the process of completing tasks.
Multimedia - assisted Teaching Method: Utilize pictures, audio and videos to make the teaching content more vivid and interesting, and help students better understand and remember knowledge.

Warming - up (5 minutes)
Activity: Play the game “Animal down”. Students stand in a circle. One student starts by saying “[Animal name] down, [Animal name] down, [Another animal name] down”, and then the student representing the “Another animal name” needs to quickly respond and continue the game. This activity aims to activate students' prior knowledge of animals and create a lively classroom atmosphere.
Lead - in (5 minutes)
Activity: Show some pictures of penguins on the multimedia. Ask students some questions like “What do you know about penguins ”, “Where can we see penguins ”, “What do you think of penguins ”. Encourage students to share their ideas freely, which can arouse students' interest in learning about penguins and lead to the following learning content.
While - listening (15 minutes)
Activity 1: Listen and circle (2a)
Play the audio of the conversation. Instruct students to listen carefully and circle the coloured words they hear in the conversation. After listening, check the answers together and explain the meanings of new words like “cute” (attractive and charming), “funny” (amusing), “lovely” (pleasant and appealing), “smart” (intelligent).
This activity can train students' listening ability to catch specific information and expand their vocabulary.
Activity 2: Listen, read and take notes (2b)
Play the audio again. While listening, students read the conversation quickly and answer questions like “Who are talking about penguins ” and “About penguins, what do they talk about ”.
Then, let students fill in the notes about penguins' name, looks, home, food and ability according to the conversation. Guide students to summarize the information about penguins, which helps improve their listening and reading comprehension ability, as well as their information - organizing ability.
Activity 3: Listen for intonation and match (2c, 2d)
Play the conversation for the third time. This time, ask students to pay attention to the unstressed words in the conversation.
After listening, let students match the headers (What does it look like / How does it look ; What's your favourite animal ; What can it do ; Where does it usually live / Where is it from ; What does it usually eat ) with the corresponding questions in 2b.
This activity can help students improve their listening skills in terms of intonation and stress, and deepen their understanding of sentence patterns used to describe animals.
6.4 Post - listening (20 minutes)
Activity 1: Discussion (2 - 3 minutes)
Pose two questions: “Why does Teng Fei say ‘Don’t give them your sandwich!’ ” and “Can we feed the animals at the zoo as we want Why ”.
Organize students to have a group discussion. Each group selects a representative to share their opinions. Through this discussion, students can understand the importance of following rules in zoos and protecting animals, cultivating their critical thinking and awareness of animal protection.
Activity 2: Introduction of penguins (5 - 7 minutes)
Let students learn more about penguins by watching a short video or reading additional materials. While learning, they need to take down notes.
Then, ask students to introduce penguins in class according to the evaluation standards of speaking loudly and confidently, correct pronunciation, and accuracy of content. This activity can improve students' speaking ability and deepen their understanding of penguins.
Activity 3: Making cards and interviewing (10 - 12 minutes)
Distribute animal - introduction cards to students. Let them complete the cards with information about their favourite animals, including pictures, name, looks, home, food and ability.
After that, divide students into groups. Each student in the group takes turns to be an interviewer and interviews other group members about their favourite animals. They fill in the interview form with the answers. This activity can comprehensively improve students' writing, speaking, communication and cooperation abilities.
Summary (3 minutes)
Activity: Summarize the key points of this class with students. Review new words and phrases, sentence patterns, and the importance of animal protection.
Ask students to recall the knowledge they have learned through the above activities, which helps students review and consolidate the learned knowledge, and strengthen their awareness of animal protection.
Homework (2 minutes)
Basic: Remember the new words and expressions learned in this class. Students can use flashcards or word - memorizing apps to help them remember.
Improving: Make dialogues with their partners using the sentence patterns learned in class. They can practice in person or through video calls and record their dialogues if possible.
Extend: Write a conversation about their favourite animals with the help of the information in 2d. The conversation should include at least 5 - 8 sentences and cover aspects such as appearance, habitat, food and why they like the animal.
