Landscape architect Kotchakorn Voraakhom has designed a new green roof on the Rangsit Campus of Thammasat University, about 25 miles north of central Bangkok,Thailand. Her imaginative work challenges the common thinking that urbanization has a negative impact on the planet, whether flooding, excess(过度的) energy use, disrupted(扰乱) biodiversity or the heat island effect.
The 236,806-square-foot structure, which opened in December 2019,includes a flood water management system and Asia’s largest rooftop organic farm.It combines modern landscape architecture with traditional agricultural knowledge, creating a green and friendly environment.
The green roof, containing an H-shaped landscape, looks like a futuristic hill with a brick building beneath it.The hill features a complex pattern of zigzagging terraces(之字形梯田) of planted beds, leading all the way down to the bottom. When rainwater hits the roof,it flows down the zigzags while being absorbed by the soil in the beds. The excess water is directed into four storage ponds—with a capacity of up to 3 million gallons. The process slows down the flow speed of rainwater runoff compared to a normal concrete rooftop. This keeps the area from flooding during heavy rains.
The roof’s terraces are filled with organically grown crops, including a drought-tolerant variety of rice, many local vegetables and herbs. The farm can supply the canteens on campus with a large amount of rice, herbs and vegetables a year. The food waste is composted(把……制成堆肥) to fertilize the farm, and water from the storage ponds is used to water plants, creating an entirely localized and circular system.
The farm serves as an outdoor classroom and a source of local jobs, too.Farmers offer workshops on sustainable agriculture and nutrition as part of the university’s sustainability curriculum.“Students and community members are invited to participate in seasonal seeding, harvesting, and so on,” says Voraakhom.“The urban farm is training a new generation of organic farmers with real-world skills. It also promotes a sense of community.”

A.It’s creative. B.It’s short-lived.
C.It’s demanding. D.It’s time-consuming.
29.Why is the rooftop designed to be zigzag
A.To store more water.

In recent years, scientists have found a surprising phenomenon:In many cultures around the world, parents don’t struggle to raise helpful, kind kids. From ages 2 to 18,kids want to help their families. They wake up in the morning, voluntarily do the dishes, hop off their bikes to help their dad carry groceries into the house and when somebody hands them a cake, they share it with a younger sister or brother before taking a bite themselves. You can find these charitable kids among farmers, hunters and fishermen.
During the past four years,I’ve been interested in learning what these parents are doing to nurture such helpfulness in their kids. While doing the research,I traveled to three of the world’s most honored cultures—the Maya,Inuit and Hadzabe, and describe what I found in my new book—Hunt,Gather,Parent.
Supported by psychologists,my research result shows that parents raising helpful children welcome young children and babies into family chores and work—even if the child will make a bit of a mess or slow down the work, just opposite to many of American parents. What they say is that,“I know they are not going to do a good job,but to create more work for me.” In fact, turning down help from kids can have a bad influence, destroying their desire to help and possibly stop their desire to take care of their families.
“Given request at an early age,the children would start to act on what’s needed, and then the less likely parents need to be telling them what to do later,” Lew-Levy,a psychologist in Harvard University, says.“You can pull back on the teaching, and kids just do it on their own.” But how does a parent let a young baby help with a task they can’t actually do yet—especially a task that may be too dangerous for them You can find specific instructions in the following chapter.
32.What does the underlined word “charitable” mean in paragraph 1
A.Selfish. B.Dependent. C.Helpful. D.Curious.
33.Which of the following best describes the parents raising helpful children
A.Patient and serious.
B.Open-minded and thoughtful.
C.Influential and risky.
D.Hardworking and adventurous.
34.What do Lew-Levy’s words mean
A.Children just act on what their parents tell them to do.
B.Parents should allow kids to do whatever they want.
C.Parents are unlikely to tell children what to do at an early age.
D.Children are more voluntary when given requests at a young age.
35.Which is the best title for the text

Emily was super excited, but she knew that going to a different country with a brand new culture might not be easy. When she arrived in China, she had an open heart and lots of hope, but the cultural differences, the language barrier, and the unfamiliar surroundings made her feel a bit overwhelmed.
On her first day at a Chinese school, she felt like she was in a completely different world. The students spoke a language she couldn’t understand, and the way things worked in the classroom was very different from back home.During lunchtime, poor Emily sat all by herself in a corner of the cafeteria, feeling lost and lonely.Just then,a friendly Chinese girl came up to her with a warm smile and said,“Hello,my name is Li Shanshan.I noticed you’re new here.Would you like to be our friend?”
Emily was so relieved and thankful for the friendly offer.“Thank you,” she replied with a big smile.“I’m Emily, and I’m really happy to meet you.”
Shanshan introduced Emily to her group of friends, and they all welcomed her with open arms. They helped Emily with her Chinese language, taught her about Chinese customs, and shared their favorite Chinese foods.Slowly but surely,Emily started to feel more comfortable and understand the Chinese culture better.
One day,as the English teacher was planning her class schedule, she came up with an idea. She decided to assign each student in the class to do a presentation about their hometowns the next week. She believed this could be a great way for the students to learn about different cultures and improve their public speaking skills.
