On Dec.26,Gelinne was having a cup of coffee at home, gazing out at frozen Beards River.Suddenly, his daughter cried “Look!” Gelinne looked up just in time to see a small aircraft a few hundred yards away, coming down.
As the plane disappeared behind the trees,Gelinne,a former sailor, realized it would land in the river.Without hesitation,he ran down to the waterfront. The plane had slid to a stop on the broad, frozen river, far from shore, sinking. The pilot was standing on the wing.Gelinne knew from his previous training that even a few minutes in the icy water could kill the pilot.
Gelinne tested the ice with his foot and decided not to take any chances walking on it.So he and his son,John, pulled two kayaks(皮划艇) out.“If it can float on the water,it can slide on the ice,” Gelinne said.
The kayaks’ paddles(桨) proved too weak,so the pair tried using sticks to push the boats along.Their first attempts left them spinning in circles. But with effort, they made progress. When Gelinne reached the plane, the pilot was standing on a tail wing, surrounded by open water.Gelinne pushed his kayak off the ice and into the water, paddling toward the pilot and thinking,“What if he panics What if I fall over?”
With his son nearby,Gelinne focused on keeping the pilot calm, joking,“Just hang on to the kayak as if you were hugging your wife.” The pilot grabbed the kayak’s bow.Gelinne knew he had to get the pilot onto the shelf of unbroken ice.But each time Gelinne tried, the kayak broke through the ice.He needed help.
Soon a police officer arrived and radioed for help.A boat from the local Department of Natural Resources appeared. It picked up the pilot,Steve 71,and rushed him to safety, who would be treated for minor injuries.Later the boat returned to help Gelinne, exhausted,to shore.
The boat had arrived just in time,Gelinne recalled.“I’m 60 years old,” he says.“There was no way I could get him to shore.” Still,he was satisfied.

Sleep, considered a luxury by many,is essential for a person’s well-being.Researchers have found that insufficient sleep increases a person’s risk of developing severe medical conditions, such as obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases. Now,a new study by Boston’s Massachusetts Institute of Technology(MIT) has found that getting sufficient sleep is also the key to improving academic performance.
Jeffrey Grossman, who led the research, was not trying to find the link between sleep and grades when he handed out Fitbits to the 100 students in his introduction to Solid-State Chemistry class.Instead, the professor of Computational Materials Science hoped the popular wrist-worn device which tracks a person’s activity 24/7,would show a connection between physical exercise and academic achievement.
However, the study, published in the journal Science Learning on October 1,2019,discovered a surprising insight. There was a straight-line relationship between the average amount of sleep a student got and his/her grade on the 11 quizzes, three midterms, and the final exam administered during the semester.
Even more interesting,it was also not sufficient for students to just head to bed early the night before a test.Instead,it’s the sleep you get during the days when learning is happening that matters most.
The time when students went to bed each night was similarly important. Those who went to bed in the early hours of the morning performed poorly, even if the total sleep time was the same as a higher-performing student.“When you go to bed matters,”Grossman says.“If you go to bed after 2,your performance starts to go down even if you get the same seven hours. So,quantity isn’t everything.”
28.What is the new finding about sleep
A.It’s essential for a person’s health.
B.Sleeping less may cause obesity.
C.Sleeping too much is dangerous.
D.Ample sleep leads to better grades.

B.Heading to bed at 3 a.m. every day.
C.Getting enough sleep while learning.
D.Going to bed early only before a test.

The world’s longest cave system is an enormous network of 420 miles of twists and turns(迂回曲折),with limestone(石灰岩) falling from the ceilings in drops.
Mammoth Cave National Park preserves this unique and historical natural wonder. As large as the limestone cave system is,park officials estimate there may be another 600 miles of cave passageways that have yet to be explored. The incredible rock formations have resulted in the park being recognized as a World Heritage Site, thanks to its extraordinary size and scientific importance—making it one of only 13 natural US sites with that title.
The caves were created naturally by the process of limestone wearing away.Rain and rivers slowly break down and shape soft limestone, which creates the vast underground network. Not only are they an amazing destination to visit, but the system also provides drinking water for roughly 40% of the US population, and they’re of historical significance too.
The caves act as a time capsule that preserves over 5,000 years of human history—and the caves’ first explorers were Native Americans, who mined the upper levels of Mammoth Cave. Thanks to the cave system’s atmosphere and natural protection from any kind of human disturbance, the archaeological(考古的) sites have been left in great shape.
Mammoth Cave was established as a national park thanks to strong local support.Back in the 1920s,Secretary of the Interior Hubert Work created the Southern Appalachian National Park Commission in 1925 to survey proposed park sites, including the caves. After years of work acquiring the land for the park,as well as building roads, trails(小径),and public facilities,Mammoth Cave National Park was established on July 1,1941.The park now receives around 2 million visitors a year, with roughly a quarter taking a tour of the caves-everything from a cultural tour to the more adventurous climbing tours on offer. The cave supports more than 130 wildlife species, such as the eyeless cavefish, which has adapted to the lightless environment by no longer growing eyes, and the cave crayfish.
32.What has made Mammoth Cave National Park a World Heritage Site
A.The wildlife species. B.The rock formations.
C.The cave passageways. D.The scientific discovery.
33.Why are the caves of historical value
A.They are an amazing destination to visit.
B.They were first explored by Native Americans.
C.They provide drinking water for the Americans.
D.They preserve human history over 5 000 years.
34.What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A.It took a lot of work to establish the park.
B.Local people donated the land for the park.
C.Around 2 million people visit the caves annually.
D.The site of the park was decided by the secretary.
35.What can be the best title of the passage
A.Taking Cultural and Adventurous Tours
B.Preserving a Unique and Historical Wonder
C.Exploring the World’s Longest Cave System
D.Establishing Mammoth Cave National Park

If you get a cotton(棉花) ball out of a brand-new bottle of pills(药片),you may probably wonder what it is used for. This soft ball seemingly only blocks your way to your pills.Adding to the confusion,it’s not any kind of special object. It’s just a common cotton ball. Then what purpose could it possibly serve 36
The first-ever cotton balls started showing up in pill bottles in the early 1900s.The medical company Bayer was the first one to add them. 37 It worried that the customers might end up taking too much or too little medicine due to the small pieces.
Decades later, pill coatings made the cotton balls useless. The coatings on pills ensured they were no longer in danger of breaking apart in the bottle.Bayer itself actually stopped putting cotton balls in the bottles just decades ago. 38 Why It had become a custom.
According to a report, consumers expected to see the cotton balls there and most didn’t know they were useless. 39 They might be an annoyance, surely. But customers have been used to the cotton balls. Many have believed their pills are somehow safer or fresher because of them.
40 The cotton balls don’t preserve quality or freshness in any way.And in fact, they might have the opposite effect. It’s said that the cotton can actually draw moisture(潮气) into the bottle.Too much moisture could affect pills’ effect.
A.Actually,the idea is not right.
B.They’re out of place and harmful.
C.Many other companies, though, still kept them in.
D.The truth is that it used to have an important function.
E.It was the first time that people had found the cotton balls’ secret.

Janiece Jenkins is a math teacher at East Orange Community Charter School,New Jersey. She had been certified in CPR(心肺复苏术) and first aid,5 years before working here in the school.Because Janiece had never had a chance to put it into use,she almost forgot it after all those years.Recently, the school arranged for all the teachers to take a refresher course. As in the past,Janiece thought little of the first aid knowledge and she never thought she could put it into practice one day.But it happened that way.
On a hot afternoon,9-year-old Robert Stonaker was preparing for his math class when he felt a rush of thirst. He reached for a bottle of water from his school bag.But the cap of the water bottle was too tight,so he struggled to remove it with his mouth. When the third-grader squeezed(拧) the bottle, the water pushed the cap down his throat and blocked his airway.
Unable to breathe,Robert got out from his seat in panic and ran over to the sink to see if he could spit the cap out himself. When that didn’t work,he ran across the room to ask Janiece for help, pointing to his throat.
The boy couldn’t talk. His face was pale, and he was struggling to breathe.Janiece knew from the desperation on his face that he was choking and that he was in bad need of help.At the critical moment, timing is everything.Brain damage starts after approximately four minutes without oxygen.
Thanks to the refresher course, the first aid steps were fresh in Janiece’s mind. She stood behind Robert and wrapped her arms around the boy’s waist. With one hand made a fist, she pressed hard and quick into his stomach. She pulled inward and upward as she pressed as if she’s trying to lift the boy off the ground. After several rounds of pulls and presses, the cap of the water bottle popped out of his mouth.Seeing the cap on the floor,Janiece breathed a big sigh of relief.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题纸的相应位置作答。

第一节 参考范文
Accidents always happen.Last Friday,Li Hua had his glass knocked over, thus spilling the hot water on his right foot.On hearing his cry,I immediately arose from my seat and ran to him.
It seemed that Li was suffering extreme pain and he let out a yell of pain.I checked his injury without delay and found his right foot had become red and swollen, followed by some blisters. With the help of his desk mate,we instantly carried him to the restroom and placed the burns under cool running water, which lasted about ten minutes. To our relief, the sharp pain seemed to be greatly eased. After drying the burnt area gently with a clean cloth,I covered it with a loose bandage from our first-aid kit and rushed him to the hospital.
Only then was I aware of what a difference a basic knowledge of first aid could make, especially in such a case.
