Maria Sibylla Merian—Drawing from Life
In 17th-century Europe，it was unheard of for a woman to travel by herself，but that didn’t stop Maria Sibylla Merian.In 1699，she and her 21-year-old daughter Dorothea sailed from Amsterdam to Suriname in South America.The three-month voyage was dangerous but she was determined to go.Besides，she was on a bold mission.She would be the first person to go to a foreign country to study and paint insects directly from nature.
When they arrived in Suriname，Maria and Dorothea started working.Day after day，they took their painting materials into the hot and humid rainforest to collect and draw insects and plants.Artists had never done such a thing before.Still life painters drew from dead specimens.But Maria had always been interested in painting living animals and plants，and her favourite subjects were insects.
In the rainforest，she climbed ladders to study and collect insects.She had trees cut down so she could see what lived at the top level of the forest more than a hundred feet overhead.Maria combined both art and science in her work.As a skilled observer，she kept detailed notes.
Maria planned to stay in Suriname for five years，painting and collecting insects and plants that Europeans had never seen.She learnt about the medicinal plants of the area and expanded her interest to spiders，birds，lizards and snakes.She planned to publish a book of her new work on her return to Amsterdam.
After two years，she had to leave Suriname.The heat was unbearable and she was ill with malaria.But she had more than enough material for a book.In June 1701，Maria and Dorothea sailed back to Amsterdam with many paintings and specimens—butterflies preserved in brandy，bottles with crocodiles and snakes，lizards’ eggs and boxes of pressed insects.

It is no secret that play-based learning improves the cognitive，physical，social，and emotional well-being of children.Researchers now believe that certain board games，like Chutes and Ladders and Monopoly，can also help enhance their math skills.
The team at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile in Santiago，Chile，came to this conclusion after analyzing the results of 19 studies.They were conducted between 2000 and 2023.All but one of the studies focused on the relationship between math skills and board games.
In these studies，kids aged 3－9 played board games under the supervision(监督) of teachers or trained adults.The 20-minute sessions were held twice a week for about six weeks.In some cases，one set of kids(the intervention group) played number-centric board games，while the other(the control group) played board games that did not require math skills.In other studies，both the intervention and control groups played number-based games.They were，however，given different games，like Monopoly and Dominoes.
The participants’ math skills were assessed before and after each study.The researchers looked for improvement in four key categories.They included the ability to name numbers and demonstrate simple number knowledge—such as “nine is greater than three.” Changes in the kids’ abilities to add and subtract and their interest in math were also noted.
The results of the study were published in the journal Early Years on July 6,2023.It revealed that playing board games helps improve the children’s math skills in over half of the four areas.Additionally，nearly a third of the children in the intervention groups scored higher on math tests than those in the control groups.

A new study conducted by University College London (UCL) in partnership with composer Eric Whitacre and Music Productions explores how singing in a virtual choir delivers significant psychological(心理的) benefits.
The research was led by Dr Daisy Fancourt，who designed an online questionnaire(问卷) to gather data from participants in Whitacre’s Virtual Choir 5.0.The results were compared with those from diverse live choirs and a data set was produced with responses from 2,316 singers.
Both groups reported experiencing improved self-esteem and greater individual confidence.The results also suggested that the virtual choir experience can help fight feelings of loneliness and promote a sense of connection to others.In addition to this，virtual singers reported that singing helped them to take time away from stresses and gave them the space to reconsider problems in their lives，although this result was greater for singers in a live choir.
“We have so much research showing that singing in live choirs is generally good for our health and well-being.” comments Fancourt.“But what we didn’t know before is whether singing in virtual choirs also has such benefits.This new research is exciting as it suggests that for people who are unable to sing in live choirs，either due to living in a community without a choir or due to illness，singing in virtual choirs can provide similar emotional and social benefits.”
