Before setting out on his band’s first national tour, before recording another album and before appearing on a major television network, Ba Nong, the frontman of the Chinese band Varihnaz had one must do task.
For its members—two farmers and a former bricklayer from rural Guangxi in southwestern China—the land and their music are indivisible. Ba Nong said: “Rather than the usual elements of love and longing, our lyrics (歌词) are on farming and harvest, from which our songs originate. That is what we should do first.”
Ba Nong hopes his music helps people consider liberating themselves from mainstream expectations. “The more tolerant and developed a society is, the more diverse its lifestyles should be, too,” Ba Nong believed.
Ba Nong was born in rural northwestern Guangxi. At the time, China’s economy was growing rapidly, and like so many in his generation, he dreamed of moving to a city. The day after Christmas, a small Chinese start-up called DeepSeek showed a new AI system that could match the capabilities of cutting-edge chatbots from companies like OpenAI and Google.
That alone would have been a milestone. But the team behind the system, called DeepSeek-V3, described an even bigger step. In a research paper explaining how they built the technology, DeepSeek’s engineers said they used only a small amount of the highly specialized computer chips. The DeepSeek chatbot answered questions, solved logic problems and wrote its own computer programs as capably as anything already on the market, according to the benchmark (基准) tests that American AI companies have been using. Above all, it was created on the cheap, challenging the idea that only the tech industry’s biggest companies—all of them based in the United States—could afford to make the most advanced AI systems.
The Chinese engineers said they needed only about $6 million to build their new system. That is about 10 times less than the tech giant Meta spent building its latest AI technology. The world’s leading AI companies train their chatbots with supercomputers that use as many as 16,000 chips, if not more. DeepSeek’s engineers, on the other hand, said they needed only about 2,000 specialized computer chips from Nvidia.
DeepSeek does not make any products for consumers, leaving its engineers to emphasize entirely research. DeepSeek continues to show that it is not far behind. This month, it released an impressive reasoning model of its own.
Reuven Cohen, a technology consultant in Toronto, has been using DeepSeek-V3 since late December. He says it is similar to the latest systems from OpenAI, Google and the San Francisco start-up Anthropic—but easy on the wallet. He joked, “My bank account is finally breathing. This is the kind of technology that someone like me wants to use.”

Most companies have been switching from plastic straws (吸管) to paper ones on the grounds of being more environmentally friendly. However, new research suggests the good-intentioned trend might not be the best alternative after all.
The study, published in the Food Additives and Contaminants journal, found the vast majority of paper straws tested contained synthetic (合成的) chemicals, known as PFAS, emerging from industrial production monly referred to as “forever chemicals”, PFAS don’t break down in the body or in the environment, which increases the high risk of cancer and other diseases. Researchers examined 39 brands of straws in Belgium from supermarkets, toy stores, fast-food chains, drug stores, and e-commerce stores. The straws were either made of paper, bamboo, glass, stainless steel, or plastic, and the researchers tested each brand for concentrations of PFAS.
Sixty-nine percent of the brands contained PFAS, with paper straws more likely to contain the chemicals. The researchers found 90% of paper straws had PFAS, compared to 80% of bamboo straws, 75% of plastic straws, 40% of glass straws, and stainless steel straws with zero. Further, a paper straw brand has the highest PFAS concentration.
The researchers noted the amount of PFAS detected in the straws was overall low and figured that polluted soil in the making of plant-based straws could have led to the detection of PFAS. It was also not understood if the chemicals were seeping (渗入) into the liquids themselves. Nevertheless, it begins the question of whether or not to use paper straws in the name of sustainability.
“The presence of PFAS in paper and bamboo straws serves as convincing evidence that they can barely be degraded,” Thimo Groffen, PhD, author of the study and an environmental scientist at the University of Antwerp, said in a press release.
