Are you troubled by housework, such as cleaning tables or tidying your room A new robot is here to help! At the beginning of 2024, the robot Mobile Aloha made by scientists in the US became popular online.
In the videos posted, we can see the robot preparing dishes, from cutting vegetables to breaking eggs. It’s also good at watering plants, petting cats, cleaning the floor and washing clothes.
Sounds good Well, another video posted by researchers may disappoint some people. Mobile Aloha isn’t good at doing housework on its own. Instead, it learns from human actions before doing each kind of housework. When the situation changes, it can’t work well without a human “teaching” it. Then it may break dishes, hit things and even burn a pot. The robot can successfully move chairs 80% of the time. For cooking dishes, the success rate is only 40%. In short, it’s far from perfect.
In fact, AI robots are good at tasks such as solving math problems and playing chess, but they face challenges when it comes to simpler actions like cleaning. And it’s the same for Mobile Aloha. For example, if its body doesn’t move accurately—even just with a small deviation (偏差), its arm may move too far to pick up a glass.

Spring is here, and it is time to enjoy West Lake Longjing tea. Usually, we think of workers picking tea leaves by hand. But now some Longjing tea is being picked by metal workers — tea-picking robots!
In a Hangzhou tea garden, a smart tea-picking robot starts to work for the first time. “We took thousands of pictures of new tea buds (芽) and fed them to the robot for it to learn. The robot uses an AI model to recognize (识别) the buds it needs to pick,” said Professor Chen Jianneng, Party branch secretary (党支部书记) of the research team. This lets the robot find about 90 percent of the right tea buds.
The robot’s arms pull and then suck (吸) up the tea buds. These buds are quickly moved into a special box. After the robot gathers all the buds from the area it’s working at, it moves the buds from the box to a main box that holds everything it collects.
The robot was made because there are not enough people to pick tea leaves. In Zhejiang, about 400, 000 more pickers are needed now. “Picking is the biggest challenge for the development of the tea industry,” said Professor Wu Chuanyu who leads the research team.
“Tea-picking robots are a trend (趋势) of the future,” said Wu. “In about five years, the robots will do the job of picking West Lake Longjing tea instead of people,” Wu added.

One morning at Taishan Mountain in Shandong, a four-legged robot was climbing the challenging“Eighteen Bends”.
