The idea of using wood for satellites (卫星) sounds strange, but there are some reasons to try it. Wood is cheap and it doesn’t cause pollution. And in space, wood is stronger than on the Earth, since there’s no water or O2. If the test works, wooden satellites could help lower pollution in space. Satellites normally burn up as they come back into the Earth’s atmosphere (大气层). Burning metal (金属) satellites leaves behind a cloud of pollution. But when wood burns, it only leaves water and CO2 behind.
The idea for LignoSat Project came from Takao Doi, who’s a scientist and astronaut. He and other scientists thought it might be potential to build a satellite out of wood. The idea was simple, but the project wasn’t easy. First of all, the team had to find out what kind of wood would work best. In 2022, they sent three kinds of wood to the International Space Station (ISS) for testing. After eight months, the tests showed that all three kinds of wood worked well in space.
In November 2024, a SpaceX rocket carried a wooden satellite called LignoSat to the ISS. Over the next six months, messages from the satellite can help the researchers know how well the wood holds up. The project is a test to see if wood could be a good building material for space.
29. ( )What does the first paragraph mainly talk about
A. The advantages of using wood for satellites.
B. The reasons why there’s no water or O2 in space.
C. The challenges of building a satellite out of wood.
D. The differences between wooden and metal satellites.

Have you ever thought about what astronauts eat when they go to space NASA (美国国家航空和航天局) is planning a trip to Mars in 2030. It will take astronauts six months to reach Mars. They’ll stay there foreighteen months and then spend another six months coming back home.
Scientists need not only to build a spaceship and a place for astronauts to live, but also to solve a big problem: food. In the past, space food was different. Yuri Gagarin, the first man in space in 1961, ate food from tubes like toothpaste. Later, American astronauts had dried food. They added water to make it into a meal. Now, astronauts on the International Space Station take pre-packed food. But this won’t work for the Mars trip because the astronauts will be away for too long. There isn’t enough room on the spaceship to store food, and the food can’t last long enough.
A scientist named Maya Cooper has a good idea. She studies growing plants without soil (土壤). She thinks astronauts can have a greenhouse on Mars to grow fruits and vegetables. They can use these with nuts and spices from the Earth to make food. Since meat can’t be kept for a long time, astronauts will mainly eat vegetables and fruits.
Maya also makes food plans for astronauts. With the help of NASA scientists, she has made more than 100 kinds of recipes (食谱). There are breakfasts like scrambled eggs, lunches like soup and salad, and dinners with nice desserts. There’s also pizza and other favourite foods. Solving the food problem is very important for the Mars trip. It helps astronauts do important research in space.
33. ( )How long will the whole trip to and from Mars last
A. Six months. B. Thirty months.
C. Twelve months. D. Twenty-four months.
34. ( )Which is one reason that pre-packed food doesn’t work for the Mars trip
A. It’s too expensive. B. It can’t be stored for a long time.
C. It doesn’t taste good. D. Astronauts prefer fresh food.
35. ( )What are nuts and spices for
A. To clean the spaceship.
B. To make the food taste better.
C. To make food last a long time.
D. To grow in the greenhouse on Mars.
36. ( )What can we learn from the last paragraph
A. Astronauts will only eat vegetables and fruits.
B. Astronauts will have to grow their own plants.
C. Food is key to helping astronauts work well in space.
D. Researchers only care about the taste of the food for astronauts.
D [名著阅读]
(One day, Gulliver was caught in a storm and his ship hit a rock, and then was damaged. He was washed to the beach. When he woke up, he found himself in Lilliput and a lot of tiny people were around him.)
The Emperor spoke in a low voice but I could hear all the words clearly. His Majesty and I often spoke to each other but neither of us understood a single word. I tried words from many languages. No one could understand me, not even the cleverest of the Emperor’s followers.
After about two hours the Emperor left. His wife, children and their servants went too. There were strong guards around me. This was to stop the crowd of people from hurting me.
An officer told the guards to hold six men who made me angry. These men were given to me and I had to choose their punishment. I put five of them in my pocket. Then I pretended (假装) to eat the sixth man.
The poor man screamed terribly. The guards were worried when they saw my knife in my hand. I only cut the rope round his hands. Then I put him on his feet and let him go. I lifted the other five men out of my pocket and put them gently on the ground too.
The people and the soldiers were very pleased with my great kindness. They told the Emperor about it immediately. The Emperor ordered his men to make a bed for me and they had to join six hundred of their little beds together to make one bed for me.
At the same time the Emperor asked all his advisers for their advice on how to deal with me. They were very worried. If they set me free, I might be dangerous. I was eating so much food that soon all the people would be hungry. The farmers could not grow enough food to feed all of us.
The wise men thought that they should kill me. But they would not be able to bury (埋葬) me. My dead body would smell. This might cause much illness all over the country.

阅读下面短文,用英语回答短文后的问题。
On November 14, 2023, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) (国际民用航空组织)
officially recognized (认可) China’s Bei Dou Satellite Navigation (卫星导航) System (BDS) as the world level. This makes it one of the four major global satellite navigation systems, along with the United States’ GPS, Russia’s GLONASS and the European Union’s Galileo.
China started to develop the BDS in 1994. The system came into use in 2000. After 12 years of work, it began serving the Asia-Pacific region. In 2020, with the global use of BDS-3, China has improved the system to provide users with more correct positioning services, making it a valuable tool for more industries, including transportation, agriculture, and surveying.
Now, with 59 satellites in its network, the BDS has served more than 1.5 billion users across the world. Most mobile apps providing maps, navigation and shopping services in China already support the BDS. China’s satellite navigation industry is growing fast. Its value reached more than 500 billion yuan in 2022. That number is expected to double by 2025. In the first half year of 2023, there were about 13.4 million new BDS devices (设备). Nearly 60% were used in transport systems. The rest were used in communication and agriculture. The former made up about 28% and the latter 12%.
As BDS gets more popular, it is expected to play an increasingly important role in global navigation and positioning services.

The life in the future
Our life may have great changes in the future.
In the future, we will wear clothes that can control the temperature according to the weather. As a result, we don’t need to buy so many clothes. Because of the rapid increase in population, we will need more food. Robots will produce enough food for us. The houses in the future will be different. They will be built with new materials. They will be moisture-proof, fireproof and earthquake-resistant. In the future, driverless cars will become popular, which makes it easier for us to travel around the world.
I hope all of these can come true in the future.
