Fernando Trujillo is a marine biologist and has been studying Amazon River dolphins for more than 35 years. The dolphins are gray when they are born. As they 31 , they turn pink.
Sadly, over the years, the number of the dolphins has 32 . “They are in danger because of overfishing, hunting and mercury (汞) pollution from gold mining (金矿开采),” said Fernando.
Scientists found mercury, a bad chemical, in the Amazon River. The fish were taking in the chemical. As dolphins ate fish, Fernando was worried that it would 33 bring bad influence, too. To test his idea, Fernando and his team carefully caught nine wild dolphins from the river. They took a little blood from each dolphin and found high 34 of mercury in it. This can make the dolphins lose their memories, have 35 or even die. Since the local people also eat fish from the river, it may be 36 to them as well.
Fernando’s team is now working with governments to 37 the use of mercury in mining. What’s more, there is good news from their 38 on seven smaller rivers in four countries. The team found there were about 7,000 river dolphins. That 39 is much larger than they had thought. And new protection is on the way. In 2023, Fernando led a meeting for it. At the meeting, 11 Asian and South American countries decided to work together to 40 Amazon River dolphins. What great news!

13-year-old Sarah sits in her yard, laying out her handmade crafts ( 手工制品) on the table. There are baskets, flower pots, and cloth bags—all made from recycled materials. They are not just creative objects; they’re part of Sarah’s project to make a greener community.
Two years ago, Sarah would pass by a park near her house every day after school. Plastic bottles, empty cans, and broken toys littered the roadside. Seeing this, Sarah felt sad.
One afternoon, Sarah noticed some kids selling orange juice at the park. People stopped to buy it. That was when Sarah got an idea.
“Mom, what if we sell handmade crafts ” she asked excitedly that evening. “Then we can buy trees for our neighborhood with the money!”
With her mom’s help, Sarah started making crafts with great interest, using old boxes, plastic bottles and empty cans. Every day after school, she sat in her yard, waiting for customers. At first, no one came. Sarah felt down, but she didn’t give up.
Later, people began to stop by. A kind woman bought a cloth bag, saying it was perfect for shopping. Kids liked the flower pots, and one boy even asked Sarah to make him a special basket for his toys. By the end of the first month, Sarah had made $150! She bought 30 small trees. Together with her parents, they planted the trees around the park and along the sidewalks.
Now, the neighborhood looks nicer, and the birds have more places to rest. Sarah even teaches her friends how to make eco-friendly ( 环保的) crafts after school. They organize sales every month to raise money for new projects like bird feeders.

Do you often sweep the fallen leaves in your schoolyard Could they pollute our environment
Some people suggest leaving leaves on the ground instead of collecting them. The idea is to avoid sending bagged-up fallen leaves to landfills*. Instead, they will naturally turn into something nutritious**. Leaving the leaves is one of the best ways to turn yard waste into free fertilizer***, which is good for the environment and saves money. But it is important to think about the type of leaves that are falling and where they are landing. Whole leaves should not be left on walkways, because they either could make the ground so slippery that people will fall down easily. They should not be left on grassland, either because they are likely to cause disease. In areas without snow, whole leaves that cover grass stop water and sunlight from reaching the ground below.
Many people break up the leaves and let the pieces fall on the grass. The pieces break down further in the soil. Another way is to take the leaves off the grass and spread them to cover garden beds. They will mostly break down by spring. Leaves can also be used to make a type of fertilizer. Just put them in a corner and water them to keep them from drying out. It may take a year or two, but the leaves will break down into a nutritious soil.
So, why waste the fallen leaves
* The word “landfill” means a large deep hole in which lots of rubbish is buried.
** The word “nutritious” as an adjective (adj. ) here means being helpful for the plants to grow.
*** The word “fertilizer” means something added to the soil to make plants grow better.
( ) 53. The underlined word “slippery” means “_______” in Paragraph 2.
A. soft and comfortable B. smooth and wet
C. hard and beautiful D. clean and dry
( ) 54. What is the main idea of Paragraph 3

B. The development of fallen leaves.
C. The reasons for dealing with fallen leaves.
D. The ways of dealing with fallen leaves.
( ) 55. What is the writer’s purpose in writing the text
A. To encourage people to sweep fallen leaves.
B. To show the beauty of fallen leaves.

D. To show the harm of fallen leaves.

SEA SWEEPER 1000
Nowadays, the amount of sea rubbish is increasing. Traditional methods of cleaning sea rubbish have high costs, and may hurt fish. These problems can be successfully solved by a sea rubbish cleaning robot. It is called Sea Sweeper 1000 and looks like a lantern fish from the outside.
The robot has two “stomachs”, which are used to store, recycle and burn rubbish. The left stomach will be used to burn down rubbish and create energy for the robot to keep running. And the things left after burning will be divided into small parts, and then placed into the bags on the robot’s back rather than thrown into the sea. And the right stomach can store rubbish that can be recycled. When it gets full, rubbish will be placed in the bag on the robot’s tail. Once the bag is full, the robot will come back.
The lantern above its head has a sensor (传感器) and a camera. The sensor is used to avoid taking in fish. But if the robot fish does take in small fish, don’t worry, because the space between its teeth is big enough for them to swim out. And the ★ is used to take photos. These photos will be sent to its user when there is rubbish, which allows the user to check if the rubbish needs to be recycled or burned.
Although there are still some parts that need to be improved, with the robot’s assistance, we can protect the sea environment and create a better future for human beings.
