Today, people across China are celebrating the Laba Festival. It is a traditional Chinese festival. It's on the eighth day of the twelfth lunar month. It is an important festival for Chinese people. To us, it means the traditional start of celebrations for the Spring Festival.
The Laba Festival is a day of thanks for a good harvest. On this day, people usually eat Laba porridge, a porridge with eight kinds of grains(谷物). Today many temples in some areas still keep the tradition of giving out Laba porridge to the public. The porridge is believed to bring luck and joy.
The festival is also the day for people to put garlic(蒜) in vinegar(醋). This Laba garlic will be eaten with dumplings on Chinese New Year's Day. While in the past, it was used to let people remember to pay back the money they had borrowed, as Laba is near the end of the year and in Chinese garlic sounds the same as “calculate(算)”．
Customs are quite different across the country. People in Yi County, East China's Anhui Province, eat the Laba tofu made a few days before the festival. In Xining City, Northwest China's Qinghai Province, people eat porridge with beef and mutton.

Wearing hats and scarves
In China, starting in Minor Snow, the wind blows from the northeast a lot. Many people do not wear hats or scarves yet. In fact, according to an old Chinese saying, “The head is the place where all passages of the body gather”， it's necessary(必要的) to wear hats and scarves to keep one's head warm.
Drinking soup

After Minor Snow, because of low temperature and dry air, it is the best time to start making preserved pork, which by the Chinese Spring Festival would be ready to enjoy. The people in Yancheng, Jiangsu Province, have welcomed Minor Snow by making pickled vegetables.
