After Anthea Dare's daughter entered seventh grade, she wanted a phone to use social media like her friends. Worried about how it might affect her daughter's body image, Dare didn't give in. Now, she hopes Australia's plan to ban social media for children under 16 will help. Some say this ban is very strict.
The Australian government wants to make this ban official this year. Authorities have clarified that social media firms will bear the responsibility, and parents won't be fined. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said, “Social media poses risks to our youth. I've talked to many parents on this matter.” However, compared to some other countries, Australia's approach to tackling this issue is somewhat unique.
Worldwide, leaders are trying to control children's social media use due to concerns over mental well being. For instance, in Florida, there's a law banning social media for under 14s and needing parents' agreement for 14 and 15 year olds. But Australia won't adopt such measures, allowing platforms like YouTube Kids.
Tech giants like Google and TikTok have voiced opposition to the ban. Sunita Bose from the Digital Industry Group remarked, “We don't stop children from beaches; instead, we teach them to swim safely. Banning teens might push them to dangerous parts of the Internet.”
Social media companies will follow the governmental guidelines and try to enhance youth protection. However, some say we need more talk about how to do this. Research shows a link between social media and mental health issues like depression, but companies say there's no direct cause.
Certain mental health organizations express concern that the ban will stop the good sides of social media for teens. They believe kids need to learn about it. Moreover, teenagers might still access social media through an older friend's account, bypassing(避开) the ban. A 19 year old university student said, “A ban won't stop people. They might avoid discussing it with adults, leading to more problems.”

My daughter, Mia, is 16 and is learning to drive. Many parents are freaked out(惊慌失措) about putting their easily distracted teenagers in charge of a fast moving thing of glass and steel. My wife refused to teach her, leaving the task to me.
I've learned a few things. First, Mia didn't know how to drive at all. She didn't even know where to put the key. It was like watching a chimpanzee try to solve a puzzle. Worse, she couldn't remember that D is for drive, and R means reverse(倒车).
Then came the road rules. Mia liked to sail past stop signs. I had to explain that “STOP means STOP”. Had she actually read the rule book “Yes,” she said, but she forgot most of it. “It was so boring.”
Although I had been driving her around for her whole life, she hadn't learned anything.
Despite these things, I've also learned that I enjoy teaching her. I think I'm pretty good at it. I am much calmer than I thought I would be.
I also enjoy the one to one time we have together. We have some good conversations. So far, we have covered her friends' hairstyles and how stressed she feels after school. I enjoy communicating with her.
One Sunday evening, we were driving down a narrow backstreet, deep in conversation, when I realized that the car was moving quite fast. “SLOW DOWN!” I yelled, yanking(猛拉) the handbrake(手刹). We stopped the car and sat in the dark for a minute. “You can't go that fast,” I said. “You don't know enough yet.” I put my hand on her head, “I don't want anything to happen to you.”
“Me neither,” she said.
“Okay, cool,” I said. “Let's go.”
She started the car and we headed back home.
( ) 8. What can we know from the first two paragraphs
A. Mia knew much about driving.
B. Mia was a beginner at driving.
C. Mia never followed her parents' advice.
D. Mia was naturally skillful at driving.
( ) 9. The author enjoys teaching Mia mainly because ________.
A. he gets to know more about her B. it helps him be calmer in daily life
C. it is more hands on teaching D. he can help plan her future
( )10. When Mia drove fast, the author felt ________.
A. angry B. impatient
C. disappointed D. concerned
( )11. The story that the author taught her daughter driving implies that ________.
A. parents should teach their children driving as early as possible
B. parents must accompany their children to do anything
C. parents should value the time they spend with their kids
D. teenagers should be given enough space to develop
D
Over the past decade or two, there have been some interesting changes in the features of the teenagers. The psychologist Jean Twenge of San Diego State University notes that teens are growing up more slowly in many aspects, compared with teens of the same age only 20 years ago. A typical 17 or 18 year old teen in the US, for example, is now less likely to have tried alcohol or acquired a driver's licence. A 13 or 14 year old teen is less likely to have a job.
Twenge points out a number of reasons why growing up is slowing down. There's little doubt that technology and the Internet have played a major role, meaning more interaction with peers(同龄人) happens online and in the home, where experimentation and trouble are perhaps less likely. For this reason, she calls this latest group of young people the “iGen” generation and has written a book all about their characteristics. But she also points out that some of these trends were already beginning before the online culture of the 21st century, and so the Internet can't be totally blamed.
Her explanation is that teens behave differently greatly depending on how antagonistic and unforgiving their local environment feels to them. In tougher times in history, teens were forced to take a “fast life strategy”, growing up faster, giving birth earlier and focusing on basic needs. Now life in the West is generally more forgiving, and families are wealthier—at least on average—so it's possible for teens to take a “slow life strategy”, delaying the change to more adult behaviours.
“At times and places where people live longer, health services are better, and education takes longer to finish. People usually make the choice to have fewer children and bring them up more carefully,” Twenge explains.
So, what will this mean for our ideas about teenagers if these trends continue It might suggest that the 20th century idea of teenage rebellion(叛逆) without a cause is becoming no longer useful.
( )12. What may less likely happen to today's teens according to the text
A. Shopping online. B. Having a job.
C. Having parties. D. Making e pals.
( )13. What does the underlined word “antagonistic” in Paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Unfamiliar. B. Unrealistic. C. Unusual. D. Unfriendly.
( )14. What has mainly resulted in teenagers' growing up more slowly in Twenge's opinion
A. Cosy living environment. B. The Internet.
C. The heavier study burden. D. More interaction with peers.
( )15. What does the author think of the 20th century idea about teenage rebels
A. Practical. B. Ideal. C. Informal. D. Meaningless.

In 1945, a 12 year old boy saw a beautiful brooch(胸针) in a shop window that set his heart racing. But the price—five dollars—was too high for Reuben Earle. Five dollars would buy almost a week's food for his family.
Reuben couldn't ask his father for the money. Everything his father made through fishing went to his mother, Dora. Slim and beautiful, she was the center of the family, the glue that held it together. The housework was never ending, and she struggled to feed and clothe their five children, but she was happy as her family and their well being were all she cared about.
Nevertheless, he opened the shop's weathered(风化的) door and went inside. Standing proudly and straight in his flour sack(面粉袋改做的) shirt and washed out trousers, he told the shopkeeper what he wanted, adding, “But I don't have the money right now. Can you please hold it for me for some time?”
“I'll try,” the shopkeeper smiled. “People around here don't usually have that kind of money to spend on things. It should be kept for a while.”
Reuben respectfully touched his worn cap and walked into the sunlight. He would raise the money and not tell anybody, for he thought his mom would get surprised when she saw that brooch. On hearing the sound of hammering from a side street, Reuben had an idea—he could raise money by selling used nail bags. He ran towards the sound and stopped at a construction site. People built their own homes in Bay Roberts, using nails bought in bags from a local factory. Sometimes the used bags were thrown away at the construction site, and Reuben knew he could sell them back to the factory for five cents a piece.
That day he sold two nail bags and hid the money in a rusty soda tin(汽水罐).

Dear_Jack,
I heard about the disagreement with your parents yesterday, and I'm really concerned about how you're feeling. But remember, communication is key.
Try to have a calm conversation with your parents about why you need your phone and how important it's to you. Maybe you can come up with a compromise that works for everyone. It's important to show them you're responsible and can use it wisely.
Looking forward to hearing from you and how things go. Take care!
Yours,

第二节 One possible version:
Every_day_after_school,_Reuben_carried_out_his_plan. Cold and hungry, Reuben wandered on the streets, searching for the nail bags carefully. To save money, he even decided to deliver papers the next morning. Exhausted and tired as he felt, he still stuck to the plan. It was the brooch in the shop window that reminded him that what he did was worthwhile. After a long time of hard work, he made it eventually.
Finally,_the_time_came! He took out the soda tin, poured the coins out and began to count. Five dollars! His hard work paid off! Holding the soda tin firmly, Reuben rushed to the shop to buy the brooch. The moment he got the beautiful brooch, he burst through the front door and placed it in Dora's hand. Never had Dora received such a gift. Speechless and happy, she held her son tightly in her arms, with tears welling up in her eyes.
