Countless travelers have experienced the distinct anxiety-inducing feeling of turbulence(湍流) on flights: Eyes squeezed shut, hands gripped to the armrests for dear life, bracing for the roller coaster to come.
It can be intense and cause injuries during flights. Though deaths are extremely rare, they do happen.
What is turbulence
Turbulence is unstable air movement that is caused by changes in wind speed and direction, such as jet streams, thunderstorms, and cold or warm weather fronts. It can range in severity, causing minor to dramatic changes in altitude and air speed.
Is it that dangerous How can I stay safe during turbulence
Airplanes are designed to endure rough conditions and it is rare for aircraft to suffer structural damage because of turbulence.
But turbulence can toss passengers and crew members around, potentially causing grave injuries like bone fractures and hemorrhages(出血). Multiple experts emphasized that staying seated and keeping your seatbelt on as much as possible during flights were the best ways to reduce risks.
“If you stay fastened you’re far less likely to get an injury,” said Thomas Guinn, a professor of applied flight sciences at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
What about babies on laps
Children younger than 2 years old are allowed to be carried on an adult’s lap during flights, but many industry experts, mentioning dangers such as turbulence, believe this practice should be prohibited.
For decades, the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA, a union representing about 50,000 flight attendants across 19 airlines, has argued that every passenger have their own seat, no matter their age.
For decades, the F.A.A. and N.T.S.B. have urged parents to secure young children in their own ticketed seats and in an approved safety seat. The American Academy of Pediatrics also echoes this guidance. There is no federal law requiring these measures.
21. What is the main reason experts advise passengers to keep their seatbelts fastened during turbulence
A. Because turbulence changes the plane’s height and speed.
B. Because turbulence can throw people and cause injuries.
C. Because turbulence is caused by storms and jet streams.
D. Because turbulence rarely damages the aircraft’s structure.
22. What does the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA advocate regarding young children on planes
A. Children under 2 should sit on a parent’s lap.
B. Every passenger, regardless of age, should have a seat.
C. Parents should use safety seats only during turbulence.
D. The government should make laws requiring safety seats.
23. Which of the following is TRUE according to the article
A. Airplanes frequently suffer mechanical damage during turbulence.
B. The Pediatrics Academy legally requires parents to buy seats.
C. Many experts argue babies on laps face safety risks.
D. Deaths from turbulence occur regularly in air travel.
B
If you have ever been disappointed because you don’t have a good gardener, the clever robot may one day become the helper of your indoor plants.
The Hexa Plant is a six-legged robot that has been specially made to care for the potted (盆栽的) plant that it carries on top of its head. Using light and heat sensors (传感器), the robot has the ability to carry its plant in and out of the daylight. If the houseplant needs more sun, the Hexa will walk into the sunlight; and if the houseplant is getting too hot, the Hexa will go back into the area that obstructs direct light. The Hexa Plant will even do a little dance when it senses that the plant needs to be watered to warn its owner.
The robot was developed by Vincross engineer and founder Sun Tianqi after he saw a dead Sunflower sitting in the darkness in a room back in 2014. “Plants only receive an action without responding,” Sun Tianqi wrote in a blog post. “Whether they are being cut, bitten, burned or pulled from the earth, or when they haven’t received enough sunshine, water, or are too hot or cold, they will hold still and take whatever is happening to them.”
According to Sun Tianqi, for billions of years, plants have never experienced movement of any kind, not even the simplest movement. In their whole lives, they stick to where they were born. Sun Tianqi continued, “Do they want to break their own settings or have a tendency (趋向) towards this I do not know the answer, but I would love to try to share some of this human tendency and technology with plants. With the help of the robot, plants can experience the move. ”
The Hexa Plant model robots are not for sale, though Vincross does sell a Hexa robot model. It is said that in the near future the robots can open up a new market to watch over our household plants.
24. What can we learn about the Hexa Plant
A. It helps indoor plants get proper sunlight. B. It waters the plants through dancing.
C. It helps people do overall gardening. D. It carries the potted plant with its hands.
25. What does the underlined word “obstructs” mean in paragraph 2

A. The way plants spend their whole lives.

Phil Hanley stood in a studio, preparing himself up to record the final section of his book, Spellbound. It was his 60th hour in the booth at his publisher's office. The average recording length for a 7.5-hour audiobook is 15 hours. But because Hanley has severe dyslexia (阅读障碍), the process was extended. And complicated. And emotional. Nevertheless, he insisted on reading his own story. What would it say to the dyslexic community if he handed off the microphone
Hanley was an unlikely candidate to write a book in the first place. He has a solid career as a comedian, but he's not a huge reader. As a boy, while classmates learned to write, read and spell, Hanley drew lines and shapes that never quite made sense to himself or anyone else. He couldn't sound out words, and couldn't match a letter with a sound. Hanley only made it to second grade because his mother, a former teacher, insisted. Then a decade of shame and running out the clock on his own schooling. He entertained himself — and others — by cracking jokes.
After graduating from high school, Hanley turned to comedy. Slowly, dyslexia became go-to material. Hanley has come to think of dyslexia as a gift, one that inspired him to be creative and quick on his feet, to solve problems and to connect with people. Of course, it's also ripe for comedy.
Spellbound took eight years to complete. Hanley hopes parents will hear this message in his book, “The qualities that you want to develop, you’ll have those by the end of first grade if your kid is dyslexic. They'll have character, tenacity (执着) and determination. Just maintain their self-esteem.”
28. Why did Hanley insist on recording the audiobook himself
A. To demonstrate his personal reading capabilities.
B. To reduce the financial burden on his publisher.
C. To fulfill his mother's longstanding encouragement.
D. To inspire perseverance within the dyslexic community.
29. What can we infer about Hanley's school life from the text
A. He was completely ignored. B. He had nothing to do all day.
C. He didn't study but drew well. D. He spent every day like a year.
30. What does Hanley think of his dyslexia now
A. A reason to give up reading. B. A barrier to his comedy career.
C. A God-given source of comedy. D. An inescapable and lifelong regret.
31. What does Hanley think the most important for dyslexic children
A. Keeping their self-respect. B. Writing their own books.
C. Continuing their education. D. Communicating with jokes.

‘There’s So Much More to Afghanistan’: Khaled Hosseini Reflects on His Birthplace
Like so many people, the novelist Khaled Hosseini watched Afghanistan fall over the past few days with horror and sadness.
Though he has lived in the United States since 1980, he was born in Kabul, and his best-known books, like “The Kite Runner” and “A Thousand Splendid Suns,” are deeply rooted in the country’s history and culture. In a phone interview, he expressed his frustration that Americans, and the rest of the world, have for so long heard about the country in the context of death and destruction, and rarely from the people who live there.
“If you look up stories about Afghanistan,” he said, “it’s always about violence, it’s about displacement, it’s about the drug trade. There is precious little about the Afghan people themselves.”
They should be reading history books. They should be reading people who really know Afghanistan and know it well. A lot of people have relied on my books to kind of get a view into what Afghanistan is, and that’s fine, but I have never intended for my books to be representative of what Afghan life is. I hope people dig much deeper than that and read history books and learn more about Afghanistan in that way.
But I do have a perspective, and I do feel strongly about what’s going on in Afghanistan, and I have a deep affection and a deep emotional connection with the people there, with the land, with the culture, with the history and the heritage. I hope my books provide a little bit of insight on what Afghanistan is, beyond the usual story lines that we see in the media about Afghanistan as a breeding ground for terrorism, the drug trade, the cycles of war.
There’s so much more to Afghanistan. It’s a beautiful country with a beautiful, humble, kind, welcoming, hospitable and charming people. Everyone who’s been to Afghanistan says, “I’ve been to a lot of places in the world, but I’ve never been to a place like Afghanistan.”
32. How does Hosseini view his novels in relation to Afghan life
A. They offer personal insights but do not represent all life in Afghanistan.
B. They provide a full account of political and social changes in an insider’s view.
C. They are intended as primary historical sources for readers.
D. They mainly describe Afghanistan as a place of war and drugs.
33. What does Hosseini encourage readers to do beyond reading novels
A. Explore history books and works by experts familiar with Afghanistan.
B. Focus on media reports about the Taliban and drug trade.
C. Follow international initiatives and U.S. policies in Afghanistan.
D. Study Afghan political reforms and developing processes actively.
34. Which statement best reflects Hosseini’s view of Afghan people
A. They are mainly focused on politics and daily struggles.
B. They are kind, humble, welcoming, and hospitable.
C. They are deeply affected by violence and social problems.
D. They are involved in drug trade and cycles of war.
35. What is the central message of the passage
A. The world should recognize Afghanistan beyond violence and tragedy.
B. Hosseini’s novels fully represent Afghan life and culture without match
C. Afghanistan’s history is dominated by endless tragedies and conflicts .
D. Readers should mainly focus on precious resources in Afghanistan.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。
IQ scores like Einstein’s 160 or Madonna’s 140 grab attention, but EQ (Emotional Intelligence), MQ (Moral Intelligence), and BQ (Body Intelligence) are far more critical for success. A high IQ is necessary but not enough. For example, people prefer doing business with those they like and trust, even with less favorable terms. ___36___
Emotional Intelligence
EQ centers on recognizing and regulating emotions — both your own and others’, using them appropriately in situations, and building strong relationships. ___37___ This practice sharpens self-awareness of how thoughts influence feelings. Stress can be a huge killer of emotional intelligence, so you also need to develop healthy coping techniques that can effectively and quickly reduce stress.
Moral Intelligence
MQ builds on EQ, focusing on responsibility, sympathy, and forgiveness. It grows on keeping commitments, staying honest, and treating others with respect. To improve it, replace excuses with responsibility for your actions. ___38___ Show genuine sympathy for others’ struggles, as empathy promotes connection. Equally important is forgiveness — showing tolerance of other people’s shortcomings.
Body Intelligence
BQ reflects how well you understand, value, and care for your body. Though it may seem unrelated to work, it absolutely affects your work because it largely determines your feelings, state of mind, and energy level. ___39___ Choosing energy-giving foods over tiring ones, ensuring sufficient rest, making time for exercise, and even small steps like monitoring weight can dramatically benefit the way you perform at work.
___40___ Someone with these qualities can outperform a highly educated person lacking them. IQ benefits you alone, but EQ, MQ, and BQ uplift those around you, unlocking greater success and professional respect.
A. This can build others’ trust in you.
B. This leads to repeated mistakes in your act.
C. Without it, even daily tasks can feel unmanageable.
D. Developing it means noticing daily signs and acting on them.
E. Formal education matters less than developed EQ, MQ, and BQ.
F. To improve it, start by tracking your inner dialogue through journaling.
G. Thus, investing in EQ, MQ, and BQ matters more than just fixing on IQ.

In a small village of Somerset, England, there lived a boy named Jack and his beloved grandfather, an experienced sailor. The wise old man had seen the world and he often told Jack “My boy, remember, no matter how tough things get, as long as you have faith, nothing is impossible”. These words were Jack’s guiding light, especially in the dark days after his grandfather’s passing away.
Luckily, Jack had a companion with him, a horse named Lightning. Jack and Lightning grew up together, exploring the forest and playing by the river. They were inseparable friends. One day, Jack set out on an adventure with Lightning. As they went further into the forest, a sudden storm came. When Lightning tried to get away from a falling tree, he accidentally stepped into a hidden swamp (沼泽). The mud was so thick that Lightning got stuck, unable to free himself no matter how hard he tried.
Panicked, Jack tried to pull Lightning out with his own hands, but the swamp was too strong. He ran back to the village seeking for help. Swiftly, a group of villagers followed Jack to the swamp, their faces turning concerned as they saw the half- buried Lightning. From their past experience, the villagers were all aware that a situation like this meant death for the trapped animal. Yet, they still tried to use ropes to pull Lightning out, but in vain.
As the villagers returned to the village, Jack remained by the swamp, looking at Lightning. The once strong horse now stood with his head lowered, his eyes filled with a mixture of fear and helplessness as he sank deeper into the mud. Jack, determined to save his friend, recalled his grandfather’s words. Closing his eyes, Jack concentrated, and then a voice echoed in his mind: “Nothing is impossible. Use life to awake life.” Inspired, he thought, “What if I have the other horses run around the swamp to give Lightning the strength to keep fighting ”

Dear Mike,
I’m sending to you an extraordinary photo for Glimpses of Our Pretty School column. I took it by accident around 22:30 last month.
One night when I was heading to my dorm, I happened to see two teachers taking photos of the bright moon above the main building on our campus. They were sitting on their bikes. Obviously, they had just finished a long day of work and were on their way home.
What has made this photo extraordinary is the dreamy beauty of our campus and the quiet happiness on the teachers’ faces and it is selected to show my appreciation of their untiring devotion to their work.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

With regained hope, Jack rushed back to the village. His heart pounded as he explained his plan to the villagers. Seeing the determination in Jack’s eyes, they agreed to help. Together, they led the horses to the swamp, and they rode the horses to circle around Lightning. The horses’ energy seemed to transfer to lightning, his eyes filled with a shining will to live. Lightning struggled and attempted for several times but he failed to break free. However, Lightning didn’t give up and Jack’s faith and the horses’ circling never stopped. Jack kept shouting, “You can do it, Lightning I believe in you.” His encouragement rang out over the swamp.
On the seventh try, Lightning jumped out of the swamp. Like a flash of lightning, he made it. Jack ran over and hugged Lightning’s neck, with tears of joy and gratitude. The villagers burst into cheers, their faces lighting up with relief at the miracle. They surrounded Jack and Lightning, praising Jack for his determined faith. Bowing deeply, Jack expressed his heartfelt thanks to the villagers. From then on, the bond between Jack and Lightning grew stronger, and their story of faith became a legend throughout the village. And Jack’s understanding of his grandfather’s wisdom deepened: with faith and unity, any challenge could be overcome.

【原文】M: After longing for his stolen guitar for almost half a century, Canadian rock star Randy Bachman has finally been reunited with the instrument, which an eagle-eyed fan tracked down in Japan. Bachman, who wrote the original “American Woman” with his band The Guess Who, recovered his guitar in Tokyo—46 years after his cherished guitar was stolen from a Toronto hotel. “With that guitar, I wrote many million-selling songs... it was like my magical guitar. And then when it’s suddenly gone, the magic is gone.” Bachman said. He bought the guitar as a teenager in the early 1960s with $400 saved up from washing cars and babysitting. He had long admired the instrument, spending hours staring at it in a shop window with his friend and fellow musician Neil Young. Over the decades, Bachman hunted for his guitar. A Canadian fan, William Long, decided to help with the search in 2020. “Yeah, I’m a detective,” Long said. “I was confident I was going to find it.” Finally he found that a Japanese musician called Takeshi played Bachman’s beloved guitar in a video. Takeshi bought Bachman’s guitar in 2014 for around 850,000 yen ($6,300). Long alerted Bachman to his discovery, and the musicians arranged to meet in Tokyo to exchange Bachman’s original guitar with another of the same type, also made in 1957.
