During the summer, Hu Miaokun, a 19-year-old with congenital (先天的) deafness, received offers from seven universities, after years of efforts.
Born in 2005 in a village in Hubei Province, Hu lost his father at five and later lived with his grandparents after his mother remarried. Supported by his family, he was admitted to a school for children with hearing disability. “Adapting to life in a group was tough,” Hu sighed. “When I first started school, everything felt scary. I couldn’t hear anything, completely lost. I had to get used to the new environment, follow new rules, and learn how to interact with others. But over time, these challenges became easier to manage.”
Hu recalls how his teachers used tailored techniques and tools to aid learning. After middle school, Hu attended a specialized high school. For students with hearing and speech impairments (损伤), learning English proved particularly difficult. While many of his schoolmates had some basic knowledge of the language and were exposed to English through songs, movies, and everyday conversations, Hu had no previous exposure, making the task even more challenging.
“My key is reading, writing, and translation,” Hu said. He created a detailed study plan and excelled. Hu Miaokun took the national college en trance examination. His hard work paid off. Since August, Hu Miaokun has received offers from all seven universities to which he applied. Ultimately, Hu Miaokun decided to pursue product design at his dream school, Tianjin University of Technology.
With ambitions of becoming a 3D designer specializing in product modeling, he is now focusing on mastering various modeling software. “I’m deeply thankful to my aunt and everyone who has supported me,” Hu Miaokun signed. “I will continue to work hard in my studies and, in the future, use my skills to inspire and assist others.”

NASA says a spaceship that has been examining the sun’s outermost atmosphere recently got closer to our Earth’s star than any past explorer ever has.
The American space agency announced its Parker Solar Probe passed within 6.1 million kilometers of the sun’s outer corona (日冕) on December 24. Mission leaders established communication with the spaceship after the operation and said the orbiter was safe.
NASA launched the Parker Solar Probe in August 2018. Its mission is to study the sun’s powerful corona and solar wind. Solar wind is created by a continueus flow of charged particles, called plasma, into space from the corona.
In 2021, NASA announced the orbiter had passed into the solar atmosphere for the first time. At the time, the spaceship had successfully “touched” the sun.
The Parker Solar Probe is believed to have traveled at speeds up to 692,000 kilometers per hour during the mission. NASA said this was “faster than any human-made object has ever moved.”
Scientists expect the data collected by the spaceship will help them better understand how the sun behaves and influences other elements in our solar system and beyond, including the technology we use daily on Earth and in space. Such studies can provide valuable information about the workings of stars across the universe to aid in our search for habitable worlds beyond our home planet.
Developers of the spaceship say it was built with a protection made with carbon material to shield it from the extreme heat released by the sun’s corona. The protective cover was designed to survive temperatures reaching 1,400 degrees Celsius. NASA says the data-gathering instruments are placed behind the protective cover.
In 2023, scientists announced they had learned new information about solar wind from data collected by Parker. Data showed that solar wind can reach speeds up to 1.6 million kilometers per hour. Solar wind forms a large magnetic barrier known as the heliosphere (日光层). It protects the earth and other planets from the continuous flow of high-energy particles from the sun’s corona.
28.What was the highlight of this space exploration
A.This spaceship was the most heat-resistant.
B.The spaceship got closest to the sun.
C.The spaceship was flying at the fastest speed.
D.The spaceship was the first to study the solar atmosphere.
29.What does the author intend to tell us in paragraph 6
A.The value of this research. B.Advanced ship-building materials.
C.The safe data-gathering instruments. D.Research on habitable planets in space.
30.What does the underlined word “shield” in paragraph 7 mean
A.Melt. B.Change. C.Improve. D.Protect.
31.What can be inferred about the heliosphere from the last paragraph
A.Without it Parker Solar Probe would speed up.
B.It disturbs electronic communication.
C.Without it life on the earth could be affected.
D.It changes the temperature of the earth.

The growing digital divide, the gap between those with access to advanced technological tools and those without, has increasingly become a main point of discussions. In today’s digital world, this widening disparity leads to significant disadvantages for underserved communities, especially in terms of educational opportunities.
While some argue that the rise of online learning platforms has popularized education by offering a great amount of resources to anyone with an Internet connection, others believe this expansion often overlooks the fundamental barriers that prevent many people from engaging with these technologies. The digital divide is not just about the availability of online platforms; it also concerns access to reliable Internet, appropriate devices, and technical support, all of which are essential for effective learning.
As a result, students in low-income areas, particularly those in rural or underdeveloped regions, find themselves at a distinct disadvantage. They face challenges such as difficulties in accessing learning materials, participating in virtual classrooms, and even developing basic technological skills. These barriers not only block their academic progress but also limit their future opportunities in an increasingly digital economy.
Although some view the digital divide as a temporary issue that can be solved through hardware improvements and increased Internet accessibility, the problem is more complex. Without targeted efforts to address both the availability of technology and the development of essential digital skills, the gap is likely to continue. Ensuring equitable access to both the tools and the knowledge needed to use them effectively is crucial to bridging this divide and promoting fairness in education.
The digital divide presents a significant challenge to educational equity. Addressing it requires a comprehensive approach that goes beyond simply increasing Internet access, focusing also on building the necessary facilities and skills to ensure that all students, regardless of their background, can achieve success in the digital age.
32.What does the underlined word “disparity” in paragraph 1 probably mean
A.Difference. B.Difficulty. C.Disadvantage. D.Distribution.
33.What does the author think causes the digital divide
A.People’s low digital literacy. B.Inequality in accessing technology.
C.Poor technology tool accessibility. D.Lack of interest in digital technology.
34.What will be the consequence of not accessing reliable Internet
A.Slow academic advancement. B.Damage of educational equity.
C.Unsound digital economy in future. D.Preference for traditional classroom settings.
35.How does the author find the issue of digital divide
A.Severe. B.Insignificant. C.Unsolvable. D.Sensitive.

In common with many other women, I was crazy about shopping. Whenever I came across something I liked, I had a strong desire to take it home. As a result, I spent a lot of money buying piles of things that I didn’t really need. My husband sometimes tried to persuade me to buy less and live a simpler life, but I wouldn’t listen. To me, shopping was more than a hobby. It made me delighted and relaxed.
However, one day when I stayed at home looking around my house, I realized that my own cherished knickknacks (小摆件) had become dust collectors. My treasures had overtaken my home, the furniture was closing in on me, and I had piles of clothing. Some of them had never been worn before. My home had become a prison instead of a heaven. It was then that I realized my hobby had become a sweet burden for me. It’s high time that I should make a change!
At first, making the decision proved easier than carrying it out. I’d come home from work, stand in the doorway, and gaze at my paintings, favorite chair, and dolls. I would delicately hold and admire a fine tea set that, until now, I had long stopped noticing on the shelf. My doll collection was the biggest trouble. Getting rid of these toy babies I had purposely chosen and lovingly displayed on shelves for so many years felt like a family betrayal (背叛) Even though the dolls had “certificates of authenticity (防伪证明), and some were signed by the artists, it didn’t feel right to sell them. Having no idea what to do with these dolls, I turned to my husband for help.

66.Dear John,
I am so glad to hear from you. Learning that you are working on Chinese, I strongly recommend you the novel Journey to the West by WuChengen.
The novel is one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature. The tale is about a Buddhist monk and his three disciples, animals with human characteristic, traveling west to India in search of Buddhist scriptures. In my opinion, the study of this novel opens the way to Chinese values and history, from which you will get better understanding of Chinese culture. Besides, the novel offers a mixture of adventure and comedy, so while enjoying reading, you will surprisingly find you can speak and write in Chinese more fluently.
To advance your Chinese proficiency and make you enjoy the charm of Chinese language, I hope you keep reading. Your Chinese will achieve great progress.
Best wishes to you.
Yours,
Li Hua
67.One possible version:
Paragraph 1: After talking with my husband, I made a decision that something special needed to be done. I decided to give the dolls to residents at a nursing home. As my husband and I pulled wagons (小货车) filled with dolls through the halls of the nursing home, we allowed the patients to pick their favorite ones. Eyes lit up as everyone chose a doll, with many of them sharing memories of their own long-ago favorite dolls. Several residents in wheelchairs gathered together in the hallway, patting the hair of their babies and smoothing down dresses. Letting go felt really good.
Paragraph 2: After that experience, I couldn’t wait to get rid of the rest of my belongings. A dear friend of mine became the receiver of most of my things so she could host a garage sale and raise funds. My son took some furniture he needed and I sold a few items. Within months, I had nothing left but photos, some electronics, and a backpack filled with clothing. I had an amazing sense of freedom! Now I am open to more choices and ready to begin a new life. I can travel the world, live in a tiny house...I’ve gained so much more by owning less.
