The Qingming Festival is also known as Tomb-Sweeping Day or Pure Brightness Festival. It usually falls between early and late spring. The Qingming Festival has both cultural and natural meaning, serving as both a traditional holiday and a natural solar term(节气). The two main customs of the Qingming Festival are tomb sweeping and outings, which have been passed down since ancient times in China.
The ancient Chinese divided each solar term into three “hours”, or three phases, to describe the regular natural changes. There are 24 solar terms in total.
Now, the Qingming Festival is not only a time of sadness for many people, but a poetic and energetic festival. On that day, people offer sacrifices to their ancestors(祖先) and sweep their graves, which has become a fixed tradition of the Chinese nation over the generations. The specific customs of the Qingming Festival include: tomb sweeping, spring outings, playing cuju, playing polo(马球), planting willows(插柳) and swinging. Whether we’re young or old, rich or poor, we have one thing in common: The moon has always looked down at each of us when it lights up the night sky.
Just like a mirror, the moon reflects the sun’s light. It can also reflect people’s feelings. This is probably why the moon is always popular among Western and Chinese music, poems and other forms of literature. So when we look at the moon, what exactly do we see looking back at us
Well, that depends on who’s looking.
The ancient Greek poet(古希腊诗人) Sappho, for example, saw the moon as a woman who lit up space with her beauty.
Later in England, however, the moon’s image(形象) was completely different. In the Middle Ages, English people often drank to get away from difficult life. In their eyes, the moon was a man who liked drinking.
The moon is also a popular subject in Chinese poems. The Chinese Tang Dynasty poet LiBai’s Quiet Night Thought reads, “I look up to the bright moon, and then I look down and think of home.” Similarly, Zhang Jiuling wrote in another poem, “Looking at the moon and thinking of one far away.” So in Chinese culture, when people look at the moon, they may miss their hometown and someone. Interesting, right

Every year in early April, tens of thousands of people in China visit the tombs of their parents, grandparents and ancestors(祖先). It is Tomb Sweeping Day, the traditional Chinese festival to remember the dead.
On Tomb Sweeping Day, Chinese families sweep the tombs and clean away the grass around them. Then they burn paper money and put flowers and fruit in front of the tombs. They hope the dead can enjoy them and bring the family good luck.
However, it is not only the Chinese who remember the dead. People in other countries also have festivals for the dead.
In Japan, the Obon Festival(盂兰盆节) is one of the most important festivals. It is also a holiday that serves as a family reunion. During Obon, Japanese people return to their hometown and visit their ancestors’ tombs. They also believe their ancestors’ spirits return home to be reunited with their family. People perform a “Bon Odori(盆舞)” to welcome the spirits. On the last day of Obon, they put paper lanterns in a river to send off the spirits.
In Russia, people remember their ancestors on the Day of Rejoicing(欢庆). It’s usually in late April or early May. The name of this festival means birth and happiness. Russians believe that people shouldn’t feel sad for the dead because death means birth in another world. On the Day of Rejoicing, Russian people draw beautiful pictures on eggs and put them in front of the tombs. After that they have a picnic together. They hope for a good life for both the living and the dead.

Ⅷ. One possible version:
Dear Tom,
I’m very glad to tell you something about our tradition festival. August 15th of a year is the Mid-Autumn Festival. It is one of the most important traditional festivals in China. On this day, we often come back home from different places and get together to have a big dinner with our families. At night, we have the tradition of admiring the moon and sharing mooncakes, so on the night we often enjoy the bright full moon and eat all kinds of delicious mooncakes in the open air at the same time. The mooncakes are round like the moon. They carry people’s wishes to the families they love. How happy we are on this day!
This is the Mid-Autumn Festival in China. I hope you’ll like it. (118words)
