In Florida, a senior high school located near the beach serves as a meeting point where students gather for a two-mile walk on a Sunday to neighboring high school to raise money to build a well in a Niger village.
In many parts of Niger, access to clean water is a big issue. Rainwater collected during the rainy season is stored deep underground, sometimes as far down as 900 feet. However, bringing it to the surface can be quite challenging. It often requires specialized equipment. While shallower wells are less expensive, they still need labor and technology to function effectively. A single well can provide water for an entire village, making a big difference in their lives.
In the weeks before the Water Walk event in 2024, students walked through their coastal town and asked donations (捐赠) from local businesses. They traveled much farther than the two miles they would cover during the actual event. “It was all worth it to make a positive impact on people in Africa,” Alex Johnson remarked as one of student organizers
Standing on the boardwalk and looking out over the sand to the horizon (地平线) and beyond you can see a lifeline reaching from a few devoted kids to a similar group of kids in an African village. What once seemed like an unimaginable connection now feels unbelievably real. Students on both sides of the world walk under the same sun. On other days, they would have different places to go, but today, they walk for the same reason: to share the relationship of being one human family
In another village in Niger, a well was completed. As the villagers eagerly worked the hand pump, the expectation grew. Within moments, a gentle stream of clean water began to flow, quickly turning into a powerful gush. In such a dry village, this was a wonder. Buckets filled up, and children played in the water, their tears of joy flowing as easily as the well water.
24.What can we infer about constructing wells in Niger
A.It’s expensive and ineffective. B.It’s simple and enjoyable.
C.It’s challenging but affordable. D.It’s difficult but worthwhile.
25.Why is the connection mentioned in the fourth paragraph
A.To praise the participants of the event. B.To illustrate the difficulty of the event.
C.To highlight the significance of the event. D.To share the relationship of the human family.
26.What is the main focus of the last paragraph
A.The excitement of building a well. B.The requirement for completing a well.
C.The merry sight of drawing water from a well. D.The quality of water from the local village’s well.
27.What can be a suitable title for the text
A.Students’ Walk on the beach B.From the Beach to Niger
C.Niger’s struggle for Clean Water D.Walking to a Neighboring school
The simple, three-letter word “but” might not sound or look special, interesting or beautiful. But this little word can be a powerful force in writing and in speaking. It can play an important part in creating colourful, interesting sentences.
The word “but” has many uses. For today’s report, let’s explore the part “but” plays as a coordinating conjunction (连词).When acting as a coordinating conjunction, “but” is used to add information to an earlier statement that usually goes against it in some way. Consider these lines from The Diamond as Big as the Ritz, by F Scott Fitzgerald.
“John opened his eyes wide to see whether there might be men coming down the mountain, but the mountain was bare of human life.” The first clause starts with “John opened his eyes wide” and the second clause starts with “but the mountain”. The first part of the sentence suggests an effort-opening the eyes wide. The second part of the sentence suggests that the effort was of no use-John did not see anyone. Consider how the sentence might have been different if “but” were not used. It might be something like this: John opened his eyes wide to see whether there might be men coming down the mountain, and he didn’t see anyone.
This sentence is much less interesting. Let’s explore why.
In the book Storyworthy, the American storyteller Matthew Dicks described a few words that bring a story to life. One of these words is“but”. Dicks says “but” has an interesting effect on the reader or listener. The words that come before “but” create an expectation. What comes after“but” goes against the expectation. This creates interest between statements and ideas. Other common conjunctions, such as “and”, do not have the same effect, Dicks believes. Speaking or writing that uses “and” too much becomes more like a list-and lists are not very interesting.
28.Why does the author mention the lines from The Diamond as Big as the Ritz
A.To introduce the topic. B.To show many uses of “but”.
C.To prove the power of “but”. D.To make the text more interesting.
29.Which of the following description methods is NOT used by the author
A.Listing the data. B.Quoting original material.
C.Making a comparison. D.Illustrating with examples.
30.What is the reason why this word “but” makes sentences more interesting
A.The word itself is short and attractive.
B.Most people don’t like listing in writing.
C.It is more convenient and effective than “and”.
D.It can produce a context where events don’t happen as one wishes.
31.What is the text mainly about
A.Highlighting the similarity between BUT and AND
B.Explaining why BUT has functions of various words
C.Exploring how simple BUT makes for good storytelling.
D.Recommending an interesting way of writing or speaking.
To assess (评估) protected-area impact on wildlife, a team led by researchers from the UK examined waterbird data from 1,506 protected areas and analyzed more than 27,000 bird populations across the world. They compared waterbird populations before and after the construction of protected areas, and also, populations within and outside of protected areas.
“Our study shows that, while many protected areas are working well, many others are failing to have a positive effect,” lead author Hannah Wauchope of the University of Exeter says in a statement. “In most of the places we looked at, bird populations were unchanging or were increasing, but some of them weren’t doing any better than in unprotected areas,” she adds. “There seems to be the disconnection between people talking about how much land is protected and whether those areas are actually doing anything positive.”
This study comes ahead of a United Nations meeting in China to discuss biodiversity (生物多样性) goals for the next decade. Several countries have already decided to protect 30 percent of the planet by 2030, yet the researchers say this alone does not necessarily assure positive effects on species.
“Simply reaching a certain area-based goal such as 30 percent by 2030 without focus on managing existing protected areas properly will achieve little,” co-author Julia Jones from Bangor University says. “When world leaders gather in China later this year to set goals for the next decade, I really hope to see a change of their focus, rather than simply saying how much surface area they are going to protect.”
According to Thomas Brooks, chief scientist at the International Union for Conservation of Nature, who was not involved in the study, waterbirds are a good example of a group facing the impact of human behaviors that cause biodiversity loss. These animals respond quickly to changes in site quality and are broadly distributed (分布), clearly reflecting the impact of protected areas.
32.What can be learned about protected areas from the study
A.Their problems went unnoticed at all. B.Their bird populations are increasing.
C.They have a negative effect on wildlife. D.Some of them fail to achieve their purpose.
33.What does the underlined word “this” in Paragraph 3 refer to
A.Increasing protected areas. B.Organizing the meeting.
C.Talking about biodiversity. D.Doing something positive.
34.What does Julia Jones call on world leaders to do
A.Face the impact of human behaviours. B.Try to set targets for the next ten years.
C.Have a deep understanding of biodiversity. D.Focus on the effectiveness of protected areas.
35.What does Thomas Brooks think of the study
A.Incredible. B.Trustworthy. C.Disappointing. D.Unsatisfying.

My friend Avery and I tried out for Alice in Wonderland several weeks ago. Avery really hoped she could get picked to be Alice. I said, “You’d make a great Alice! I don’t care what part I get as long as I’m in it.” Then she asked, “So you’d be happy to have a small part like the Dormouse ” I replied, “Exactly!”
A few days later, Avery and I raced over to the theatre office, where the director had posted the cast list.
“Wow!” said Avery. “You got the part of Alice and I got the part of the March Hare.”
“That can’t be right,” I said. “There must be some mistake!”
But I was really given the part of Alice. The reason why I’d done well during the audition (试镜) was that I was not nervous at all, because I had never thought I could get the major role.
I asked her if she wanted to practise our lines after school. Avery responded, “You mean practise your lines No, thanks. I’m busy this week.” “OK. How about someday next week ” I asked. “Sorry,” she whispered, “I’m sure I’m busy forever.”
That night at dinner, after my parents congratulated me on getting the lead role, they asked how I felt about it.
“Well, I’m confused,” I said. “Avery was so upset that I was picked to be Alice. She threw away our friendship.”
“Arizona, don’t you think this might be an opportunity for you to be an extra-good friend ” said my dad. “Sometimes when our friends do well, we feel envious (嫉妒的) and don’t know how to act. Try giving her a little time and understanding. I guess she’ll come around before long.”

W: Last year, I went to China as an exchange student. Mrs. Zhang, one of my father’s Chinese business partners became my caretaker, but she was very busy, so basically I had to take care of myself while I was not at school.
The second day after my arrival, I went to a supermarket searching for basic food stuff. Only then did I realize my 12-week stay in China was going to be tough — everything was in Chinese. I managed to find bread, salad and ham. However, I just couldn’t locate the whereabouts of the thing I was dying for — tomato sauce. What’s worse, hardly could anybody understand what I was trying to ask. I was almost on the edge of crying.
Then a woman approached me and asked me if everything was okay by using hand gestures. I asked her where I could find tomato sauce, but she didn’t know English, either. She dialed a number on her cellphone and passed it to me. It was her son. He talked to me in English and asked me what I needed. He then translated that back to his mother and she took me to the section.
In a strange place, if someone tries to do even this much for you, it is enough in taking a leap of faith.

Buckets filled up, and children played in the water, their tears of joy flowing as easily as the well water.(在尼日尔的另一个村庄,一口井打好了。
根据全文内容,结合第一段“In Florida, a senior high school located near the beach serves as a meeting point where students gather for a two-mile walk on a Sunday to neighboring high school to raise money to build a well in a Niger village.(在佛罗里达州,一所靠近海滩的高中是学生们的聚会地点,学生们在周日聚集在一起,步行两英里到邻近的高中,为尼日尔的一个村庄打井筹集资金)”可知,文章主要讲述佛罗里达州一所靠近海滩的高中生们走过他们的沿海城镇,为尼日尔的一个村庄筹集打井资金的故事。

根据第二段“The word ‘but’ has many uses. For today’s report, let’s explore the part ‘but’ plays as a coordinating conjunction (连词).When acting as a coordinating conjunction, ‘but’ is used to add information to an earlier statement that usually goes against it in some way. Consider these lines from The Diamond as Big as the Ritz, by F Scott Fitzgerald.(‘但是’这个词有很多用法。在今天的报道中,让我们来探讨一下‘但是’作为协调连词的作用。当充当协调连词时,‘但是’用于向前面的陈述句添加信息,而前面的陈述句通常在某种程度上与之相反。想想F Scott Fitzgerald的The Diamond as Big as The Ritz中的这些对白吧)”可知,前文提到“但是”作为协调连词的作用,接着提到The Diamond as Big as the Ritz里面的对白是为了证明上述观点,即“但是”的强大作用,故选C。
第二段中“The word ‘but’ has many uses. For today’s report, let’s explore the part ‘but’ plays as a coordinating conjunction (连词).When acting as a coordinating conjunction, ‘but’ is used to add information to an earlier statement that usually goes against it in some way. Consider these lines from The Diamond as Big as the Ritz, by F Scott Fitzgerald.(‘但是’这个词有很多用法。在今天的报道中,让我们来探讨一下‘但是’作为协调连词的作用。当充当协调连词时,‘但是’用于向前面的陈述句添加信息,而前面的陈述句通常在某种程度上与之相反。想想F Scott Fitzgerald的The Diamond as Big as The Ritz中的这些对白吧)”中使用例子证明观点;第三段中“John opened his eyes wide to see whether there might be men coming down the mountain, but the mountain was bare of human life.(John睁大眼睛要看是否有人从山上下来,但山上没有人)”是小说原著中的句子,故此处引用了原著;第三段中“The first part of the sentence suggests an effort — opening the eyes wide. The second part of the sentence suggests that the effort was of no use — John did not see anyone. Consider how the sentence might have been different if ‘but’ were not used. It might be something like this: John opened his eyes wide to see whether there might be men coming down the mountain, and he didn’t see anyone.(句子的第一部分暗示了一种努力——睁大眼睛。句子的第二部分暗示了努力是没有用的——John没有看到任何人。考虑一下,如果不使用‘但是’,这个句子可能会有什么不同。可能是这样的:John睁大眼睛,想看看是否有人从山上下来,但他没有看到任何人)”对比了句子有无“but”的不同效果;文章没有使用A项“列举数据”的方法。故选A。
根据最后一段中“Dicks says ‘but’ has an interesting effect on the reader or listener. The words that come before ‘but’ create an expectation. What comes after ‘but’ goes against the expectation. This creates interest between statements and ideas.(Dicks说,‘但是’对读者或听者有一种有趣的影响。出现在‘但是’之前的单词产生了一种期待。跟在‘但是’后面的东西与预期相反。这会在陈述和观点之间产生兴趣)”可知,“但是”可以产生一种事件不会像人们希望的那样发生的情境,故会让句子更有趣。故选D。
31.主旨大意题。根据全文内容,结合第一段“The simple, three-letter word ‘but’ might not sound or look special, interesting or beautiful. But this little word can be a powerful force in writing and in speaking. It can play an important part in creating colourful, interesting sentences.(简单的三个字母的单词‘但是’听起来或看起来并不特别、有趣或美丽。但是这个小小的单词在写作和口语中都是一种强大的力量。它可以在创造丰富多彩、有趣的句子方面发挥重要作用)”和第二段中“The word ‘but’ has many uses. For today’s report, let’s explore the part ‘but’ plays as a coordinating conjunction

根据第二段中“Our study shows that, while many protected areas are working well, many others are failing to have a positive effect(我们的研究表明,虽然许多保护区运作良好,但许多其他保护区未能产生积极影响)”可知,其中一些保护区没能达到保护鸟类的目的,故选D。
根据第三段“This study comes ahead of a United Nations meeting in China to discuss biodiversity (生物多样性) goals for the next decade. Several countries have already decided to protect 30 percent of the planet by 2030, yet the researchers say this alone does not necessarily assure positive effects on species.(这项研究是在联合国在中国召开会议讨论未来十年生物多样性目标之前发布的。一些国家已经决定到2030年保护地球30%的面积,但研究人员表示,仅凭这一点并不一定能确保对物种产生积极影响)”可知,this指代前文提到的“决定到2030年保护地球30%的面积”,即“增加保护区面积”,故选A。
34.细节理解题。根据第四段“‘Simply reaching a certain area-based goal such as 30 percent by 2030 without focus on managing existing protected areas properly will achieve little,’ co-author Julia Jones from Bangor University says. ‘When world leaders gather in China later this year to set goals for the next decade, I really hope to see a change of their focus, rather than simply saying how much surface area they are going to protect.’(来自班戈大学的共同作者Julia Jones说:‘仅仅实现一个基于区域的目标,比如到2030年达到30%,而不关注对现有保护区的适当管理,将收效甚微。’‘今年晚些时候,当世界各国领导人齐聚中国,制定未来十年的目标时,我真的希望看到他们改变关注点,而不是简单地说他们要保护多少面积。’)”可知,Julia Jones认为仅仅增加保护区面积而不关注对现有保护区的适当管理将收效甚微,各国领导人应改变关注点,故Julia Jones是呼吁各国领导人关注保护区的有效性,故选D。
35.推理判断题。根据最后一段“According to Thomas Brooks, chief scientist at the International Union for Conservation of Nature, who was not involved in the study, waterbirds are a good example of a group facing the impact of human behaviors that cause biodiversity loss. These animals respond quickly to changes in site quality and are broadly distributed (分布), clearly reflecting the impact of protected areas.(国际自然保护联盟的首席科学家Thomas Brooks没有参与这项研究。他说,水鸟是一个很好的例子,它面临着人类行为造成生物多样性丧失的影响。这些动物对场地质量的变化反应迅速,分布广泛,清楚地反映了保护区的影响)”可知,Thomas Brooks认为这项研究值得信赖,故选B。

【导语】这是一篇章说明文。文章介绍了几个激励自己培养健康的饮食习惯的方法。
36.根据空上方小标题“Start small. (从小事开始)”及空后“Begin with something small that you can surely achieve, like eating green vegetables or drinking 8-10 glasses of water every day. (从你确定能完成的小事开始,如吃青菜或每天喝8到10杯水)”可知,此处建议读者要循序渐进。D项“不要强迫自己很快养成一个健康的习惯”能够承上启下,符合语境。故选D项。
37.根据空前“It is not only necessary to bring nutritious snacks (营养小食) with you, but you should also keep the right food in your kitchen. (不仅有必要随身携带营养小食,你还应在厨房里常备合适的食物)”可知,此处讲述了如何处理健康的食物,下一句即本空处应再介绍一下对于不健康的食物如何处理。F项“不要把不健康的食品放在家里,这样你就不会吃它们了”能够承接上文,符合语境。故选F项。
38.根据空前“What you eat is your own responsibility. (吃什么是你自己的责任)”可知,此处指吃什么、不吃什么的决定权在自己。G项“如果你不允许,没有人能强迫你吃有害的食物”能够承接上文,符合语境。故选G项。
39.根据空前“They will help you take your healthy eating habits to a whole new level. (他们会帮助你将健康的饮食习惯提升到一个全新的水平)”可知,句中They指前面说到的朋友或家人,空处应是一句表明他们与你之间形成良性互动的句子,E项“你们可以相互鼓励来实现健康的生活方式”能够承接上文,符合语境。故选E项。
40.根据下文“Take time to think and plan for long-term success. You may experience some ups and downs while in the process (过程). If you fail your goal in the first week, don't lose heart but start it over and over until you reach your goal.(花时间思考和计划长期的成功。在这个过程中,你可能会经历一些起起落落。如果你在第一周没有达到目标,不要灰心,而是要一次又一次地开始,直到你达到目标)”可知,该段主要说明了在培养健康饮食习惯的过程中,你可能会经历一些起伏和失败,不要灰心,而是要重新开始,直到达成目标。由此可知,A项“要有耐心”能够总述该段,适合作本段小标题。故选A项。

67.One possible version:
Over the next week, I did my best to give Avery some space. Then one day, I approached her. “I know you didn’t exactly love the idea of being the March Hare, but you’re such a talented actress, and the way you say your lines is great.” “Thanks,” said Avery happily, with a big smile on her face. “Well,” I said, “I’m still struggling with a few things about my character. I’d love your help if you have any free time this week.” She smiled. “I might be free on Thursday.” And we practised carefully and passionately on Thursday.
Our play ended up going great. We had so much fun, and the audience loved the perfect show. They broke into loud applause. And even though things were rough for a little while with Avery and me, they’re better than ever now! She even apologized for the way she acted at first. And I’ve learned an important lesson from this experience. Give your teammate a little time and understanding, and he or she just might come around before too long.
