We live in a once unimaginable world of music. If you are interested in music, maybe you are likely to learn about some albums (专辑) created by the famous artists. Here are four valuable albums by some of the most important artists of the pop age.
Miles Davis Kind of Blue
By 1959, Miles Davis was reaching a new period. A new form—modal jazz—attracted him. He decided to form a new group, calling on musicians including John Coltrane and Bill Evans to make an all-star sextet (六重唱). The resulting album published in the same year runs through a brief history of modern jazz.
Bob Marley Exodus
In 1976, Bob Marley left for London and produced one of the most politically urgent records of his career, 1977’s Exodus. A year after the release of Exodus, Marley suffered from a kind of cancer that would finally end his life in 1981. The album stands as his best late-career work.
Fela Kuti Zombie
Over Zombie’s four songs, Kuti and his band use the power of their music to send an important message of resistance. The album released in 1977 was successful but not without results: the Nigerian government exploded into anger.
Joni Mitchell Hejira
A heartbreak album, 1971’s Blue is often viewed as Mitchell’s most classic work. But her eighth album, Hejira, published in 1976, is another towering work, one in which Mitchell put her previous multiple songs together to create something so fully realised that she said “Hejira could have only come from me.”
( )21.Which of the following albums came out first
A.Kind of Blue. B.Exodus.
C.Zombie. D.Hejira.
( )22.Who expressed dissatisfaction with the government through music

C.They are created in the same decade.
D.They play a role in the artists’ careers.

Robert Taylor talks about his art show
Like all children, I was always getting myself and the kitchen table in a mess when I first took an interest in painting. Unlike many kids, who gave up activities like art for other subjects when they went through school, I continued painting throughout my childhood. Now, after years of enjoyment, I’ve finally decided to display some of my works by holding a show at Glebe Street Library.
I’ve never had any formal art training. When I was trying to decide what I should study at university, art as a subject never entered my head. I always thought my parents wanted me to follow a subject that would be useful when I was looking for a job, so I ended up taking a business course.
And during my time at university, I seldom painted. It wouldn’t have been easy to paint anyway as I lived in school and had very little space. I kept an interest in art though and visited local exhibitions (展览) whenever I could, but that was about it. It was later in my thirties while I was working that I discovered my love of the activity again. Since then I’ve made a point of spending at least one evening a week painting.
However, my works have only ever been seen by trusted friends. They’ve always given me plenty of support and encouragement. But I’ve always wondered what strangers would think. Maybe they could give me an honest opinion of my ability. The library has offered me a room for the show. They’ve asked me to supply questionnaires about the event and I’ve included a section for visitors’ comments about the works. I’m very much looking forward to reading these opinions.
( )24.What can we know about the writer from Paragraph 1
A.He kept painting in his childhood.
B.He has held several great art shows.
C.He liked cooking when he was a child.
D.He gave up other subjects for art in school.
( )25.Why did the writer choose a business course instead of art at university
A.He had no formal art training.
B.His parents forced him to do so.
C.The business course helped in job-hunting.
D.Jobs in business were well-paid.
( )26.What did the writer do about art at university
A.He painted a lot in school.
B.He visited art exhibitions.
C.He organized art activities.
D.He did part-time jobs about art.
( )27.Which of the following words best describe the writer
A.Hard-working but shy.
B.Creative but unlucky.
C.Positive and warm-hearted.
D.Determined and talented.

Bruce has been missing the upper part of his beak (喙) since at least 2012. This makes the parrot look different. But scientists are more surprised at what he can do in spite of his injury.
When he was saved, this young bird, just at the age he was learning to fly, went to live at the Willowbank Wildlife Reserve in Christchurch, southern New Zealand.
Long, sharp beaks help parrots find insects in the woods. Bruce’s injured beak means he couldn’t forage on his own. Normally these birds use their beaks to keep their feathers (羽毛) clean, but Bruce couldn’t. However, researchers noticed that Bruce had his own way to do it.
First, he looks for his tool among pointy small stones. He then rolls a few stones around in his mouth with his tongue until he finds one that he likes. He holds the chosen stone between his tongue and lower beak to pick through his feathers.
This behaviour didn’t come from the wild. When Bruce arrived at Willowbank, he was too young to learn it. And no other bird at Willowbank uses stones this way. “It seems like he just creates this tool for himself,” says Amalia Bastos, who researches how animals understand the world.
Tool use is just one of parrots’ many skills. The birds are famous for copying—and perhaps even understanding—human speech. These make the birds seem quite smart. But studying intelligence (智力) is difficult, especially in animals other than humans.
Researchers once thought these skills made humans special. But some other animals also practise these skills, such as dolphins and elephants. So do parrots. Even so, parrots may not be an obvious choice for studying human-like intelligence. Parrots’ bodies are very different than ours. Their brains also look quite simple compared to ours. But studies over the last 10 years are highlighting the hidden powers of bird brains. And those powers suggest parrots may be able to teach us about what human-like intelligence is like.
( )28.What can be learned about Bruce before he lived at Willowbank
A.He was badly hurt. B.He was kept at a zoo.
C.He was old enough. D.He was lost in the woods.
( )29.Which best explains the word “forage” underlined in Paragraph 3
A.Cry out for help. B.Turn up in time.
C.Search for food. D.Live with others.
( )30.What can we infer about Bruce
A.He taught himself to use tools.
B.He always ran into trouble.
C.He failed to build a new home.
D.He learned the skill in the wild.
( )31.What is a suitable title for the text
A.Taking action to protect parrots
B.Knowing animals’ survival skill
C.Scientists raise young parrots in the lab
D.Parrots may be smarter than we thought

When you finally finish your homework and get to relax, what do you do Do you lie on your bed and scroll through (滑动浏览) your phone Many people find that this kind of entertainment only brings boredom and emptiness.
Contrary to what many people may think, play isn’t just a waste of time. Having the ability to play and relax meaningfully during your leisure time is important.
“Leisure doesn’t improve the quality of life unless one knows how to use it effectively,” James Wallman, the author of Time and How to Spend It, told CNBC Make It, explaining that some experiences are “junk experiences” while others are like “superfoods”.
The “superfood” activities put you into a state of “flow”, which is “about being in the present zone and really enjoying yourself”, added Wallman. Any pleasurable activity that truly challenges us has the potential to lead to the flow state.
These “superfoods” help you achieve a higher “leisure quotient” (LQ, 玩商). LQ is an index (指数) used to describe one’s ability to relax and play. A high LQ usually means that a person has good control over their life, knows how to develop their potential and keeps a balanced lifestyle that makes them healthier and happier, according to China Daily.
Psychological (心理学的) research shows that people with high LQ scores feel happier and generally avoid depression and other mental illnesses. Meanwhile, Kenichi Ohmae, a Japanese management expert, points out that those who can play will succeed.
Instead of doing passive activities like scrolling through short videos, people with high LQ scores actively select activities that suit their interests and strengths, giving them continuous positive feedback(反馈).
According to Wallman, examples of this positive feedback include: a memorable story you can share with others; a new skill or a different world view; greater engagement with the real world; and improved relationships or a higher social position.
Next time you find yourself bored with nothing to do, try engaging in some experiences that can benefit you or add to your life. It’s never too late to improve your LQ!
( )32.What kind of activities are “superfood” activities according to James Wallman
A.Those that make you energetic.
B.Those that help you find something new.
C.Those that are both enjoyable and challenging.
D.Those that cause you to feel excited for a while.
( )33.What does the LQ index measure
A.The potential to have a successful life.
B.The ability to manage stress effectively.
C.The ability to balance health and happiness.
D.The skills in meaningful play and relaxation.
( )34.What can people with a high LQ usually do
A.Follow the same world view as others.
B.Make life meaningful, enjoyable and healthy.
C.Select activities which suit their interests only.
D.Avoid depression and mental illnesses completely.
( )35.What is the passage mainly about
A.The debate about the use of LQ.
B.The importance of LQ and its effects.
C.Different ways to improve a person’s LQ.
D.The connection between LQ and happiness.

Alexis and Zoe were sitting at the kitchen table doing their homework. They had a hard time focusing on their homework because the radio station was playing music from their favourite band, the Shape Shifters.
“I can’t believe the Shifters are going to be playing here and we can’t go!” Alexis said.
“I know,” Zoe replied. “Tickets are sold out in five minutes and even if we can get some, they are so expensive!”
“It’s totally unfair,” said Alexis. “They should give the tickets to their biggest fans first!”
“You mean us, right ” Zoe said.
“Obviously,” said Alexis. “Everyone knows we’re their number one fans.”
Zoe turned the radio up a bit louder. Their favourite song was on, and the girls had an impromptu (即兴的) dance party right there in the kitchen. As it ended, they sat on their chairs again. The radio host started talking about the concert.
“I have exciting news to share with all of you. We will give away two tickets to Saturday’s sold-out show and will look for the third caller who can correctly answer this question: Who is the oldest member of the Shape Shifters ” the host said.
Alexis and Zoe looked at each other. They couldn’t believe how easy the question was.
“It’s Georgie!” said Alexis.
“No, it’s Natasha,” answered Zoe.
“Everyone knows Georgie is 29. He’s much older than the rest of the band,” said Alexis.
“I know he’s the oldest person, but the question is who’s the oldest member of the band. Natasha started the band when she was just 15. The others joined the group after her,” Zoe explained.
Alexis thought for a while and later agreed with Zoe. And they decided to call the radio station to answer that question. They stood together and held their breath.
“Hello, girls, you are lucky caller Number 3!” The girls screamed excitedly. “Nobody seems to know the answer to our question. Do you ”the host continued. Zoe said,“We know the answer!” “I hope so. If you get it right, you’ll have a chance to Saturday’s sold-out show!”
注意:续写词数应为150个左右。
Paragraph 1:
“Okay, I am ready to answer that question,” Zoe said breathlessly.

Paragraph 2:
“Congratulations, girls! You’ve won two tickets to this concert!” the host shouted.

W: Are you still playing the football match this week
M: Yes, but we’ve changed the day because of the bad weather. So it’s on Friday, instead of Tuesday.
Text 2
W: What about this two-bedroom apartment It’s right in the heart of the city.
M: That’s very good. How much is the rent
W: $1,600. But if you share it with another person, that’s only $800 per month.
Text 3
M: You have arranged to meet Mr Jackson on Friday. So I don’t have to call him, do I
W: Yeah, there’s no need to call him.
Text 4
W: I need something for work.
M: What about that blue dress
W: I don’t like blue.
M: How about the light green one over there They have it in your size, and look—it’s 30 per cent off.
Text 5
M: So, anyway, there I was, sitting in my boss’s office. All of a sudden, the phone rang and my boss said…
W: Sorry to interrupt, honey, but I think the baby’s crying. Could you go and check on her And maybe give her the bottle
Text 6
M: What did you do last Saturday
W: I went with my friend Molly to the mall. I bought some new shoes. I wanted a new dress, but I couldn’t find anything that looked good on me.
M: What did Molly get
W: She bought a new pair of pants. Then we went to see a movie, and after that, we ate ice cream. What did you do
M: I went out to eat with my dad. Then we just came home and watched television. It was a nice, quiet evening.
Text 7
W: Andrew, welcome to our Talk Show. Have you always been an English teacher
M: No. Actually, I started out as a French teacher. That was my first job.
W: Wow! So tell me about your first job!
M: My first job! I was working in Queensland in Australia and it was a faraway place. For example, the nearest supermarket was about 100 kilometers away from me.
W: That’s so far.
M: Some of the students lived a long way away from the school, so they had their lessons online.
W: Wow, so when you had an online class, how many students would be attending
M: I guess around eight, in two different places. And I would be in the third place.
W: Yeah! And how often would you be teaching like this
M: Well, the students were aged between 9 and 12 years old. They had two French lessons a week on Monday and Friday.
W: Great. That’s really interesting. Thank you.
Text 8
W: Hi, Mike. Do you know about the volunteer programme next week in our area
M: Oh, it will be held near the library, right
W: Actually the latest notice says it’s been moved to the first floor of the community centre near Moonlight Park. They have various activities like helping elderly people and collecting books.
M: Interesting. I heard there’s also a weekend trip to the mountains, but isn’t it for a cooking class
W: Not exactly. The weekend trip is for teamwork and leadership, and the cooking class is at the centre’s kitchen. Also students from other schools might join us in the mountains.
M: Oh, I see, I thought Sam was doing an art class in the mountains since they’re so creative.
W: No, their art class for kids is at the centre but Jake is doing a nature project. Maybe he’ll like the mountains.
M: Got it. I might join the cooking class then. It’s about making desserts. Right
W: Actually, it’s about making healthy food, but I’m sure there will be some sweet options.
Text 9
W: What do you think of social media
M: I have mixed feelings about it. I like it because I can keep in touch with people I don’t talk to very often. But I think that people use it too much. What about you
W: I love it. I love posting photos and getting comments.
M: Sometimes I think people use it just to get popular. I like it when my friends post articles about important issues, not just photos of themselves. Do you have a Twitter account
W: Yes, I also have Instagram and Facebook accounts.
M: I only have Facebook.I usually post links to what I think is interesting. But sometimes I post my writing.
W: I only really post photos of myself. All of my friends do, too.
M: I would have probably done that when I was 15 as well, but I didn’t have social media back then. When you’re 30 like me, you probably won’t want to post photos of yourself any more.
W: Sarah does it and she is 29.

One possible version:
An interesting tree-planting activity
Last Sunday our school organized an interesting tree-planting activity on campus. Almost all students joined it positively.
At the beginning, our teachers explained how to plant trees and then gave us a demonstration. Afterwards, we got involved and cooperated with pleasure. Some dug holes, some planted trees while others watered them. We worked hard, talking and laughing happily all the time, during which our teachers took many photos for us.
We truly enjoyed the activity. Not only did it help us cooperate better and beautify our campus, but it also raised our awareness of protecting the environment.
One possible version:
“Okay, I am ready to answer that question,” Zoe said breathlessly. “We think people don’t understand the question. Georgie is the oldest person in the band, but your question is which member is the oldest and that means who has been in the band the longest. So we think the answer is Natasha!” The girls waited and the kitchen clock ticked on, making each second slower. Were they wrong Were they going to miss out on their only chance to see their favourite band
“Congratulations, girls! You’ve won two tickets to this concert!” the host shouted. The girls screamed, dropping the telephone in their excitement. They picked it up quickly and could hear the host laughing on the other end. “You must be big fans of the band.” “The biggest!” answered the girls, hugging each other happily. They thanked the radio station for providing them with these two tickets. And the host said that they deserved them because they grasped the chance to pursue what they really cared for at the right time.
